Module 6 单元加餐练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
Some elementary school students in Dallas, Texas watch 3-D movies that go with many of their lessons.
A special machine makes the lessons come to life with the help of a computer chip. The chip can power movies as large as those in theaters and as small as the images on a cellphone. The chip is called a DLP chip, which is made up of many tiny mirrors. They reflect (反射) light in a special way to create an image that seems real enough to touch. Lessons in 3-D can turn learning into an adventure.
The students look forward to the lessons and say that they remember them better than non-3-D lessons.“It's easier to learn because you remember all the stuff, and it's more fun to learn,” says one student.
The teachers have good things to say about it too. They say that students of all different learning levels can enjoy the 3-D lessons. Brittany Russo, one of the teachers pointed out that the most advanced students in her class are no longer bored, and the students who struggle with subjects are able to understand them better now.
Students wear special 3-D glasses to watch the lessons like science, math and more. Some lessons take students on field trips to faraway places that they might never go to.
Vera Johnson, a science teacher, said that she enjoys the science and math lessons best. She pointed out that students who get to see a 3-D movie understand the subject quicker. She also likes the videos about outer space.“You can't really go up and see the solar system (太阳系),” Johnson says, “but that this is the next best thing.”

ORTOTROT? I heard that word while studying in Australia. It is a local language for“Are you ready (to go)?”. And at Sydney Airport, I asked the way to the train station and a man told me “Go ask that ‘bloke’ over there.”“Bloke” is used in Australia and refers to a person.“Day” and “die” sound almost alike and since “a”,“i” and “o” all sound almost the same, I have always told my Australian friends, jokingly, that they only need 24 letters, and not 26 like the rest of us do.
Australian English began to be different from British English in 1788 and has many words that some consider unique (独特的) to the language, such as outback, meaning a remote,sparsely-populated (人口稀少的) area. Early settlers from England brought other similar words, phrases and usages to Australia.“Bonzer”,which was once a common Australian word meaning “great” or “beautiful”,is thought to have been an American term. The American influence on language in Australia has come from pop culture, the mass media (books, magazines and television programmes) and the Internet. Australian English is most similar to New Zealand English for their similar history.
Words of Irish origin are used, some of which are also common elsewhere in Irish, such as“tucker”for“food”. Some native English words whose meanings have changed under Irish influence, such as “paddock” for “field”,which has exactly the same meaning as the Australian “paddock” are still in use.

How to Study Smarter, Not Harder
Here are some of our favorite study tips that will help any student study smarter, not harder:
Recite As You Study
Reciting — saying things out loud should first take place as you read through each paragraph or section. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.
Take Fuller Notes
Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.
Study the Middle
The best time to review is soon after you've learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.
Sleep On It
Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It's easier to remember material you have just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you've fallen asleep.
Combine Memory and Understanding
There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote. Ideas are best learned by understanding.
The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again.
8.You can notice your mistakes by ________.
A.studying the middle B.taking notes
C.speaking things out aloud D.sleeping on it

参考范文:
2012 is a disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich. The film stars are John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton and Woody Harrelson.
The film tells of how the main characters survive the human catastrophe caused by unusual sun activity. Jackson, good at writing novels, experiences a series of strange things with his children in Yellowstone Park. At last Jackson and his family go through the difficulty with love for each other and respect for life.
I think it is one of the most satisfactory films of the year and it really can be called the “mother of all disaster movies”. From it we learn that human beings should take measures to protect our earth. If not, such a catastrophe might come in the future.

When the TV viewer turns on his set, what sort of programs does he have to choose from? You might think there would be more programs devoted to entertainment than to anything else, but that's not the case. In most countries, fewer than 20% of broadcasting hours are devoted to entertainment. U.S. figures are high — 34.8%, and the unloving Canadians are even higher with 44%. Except Canada and Italy, all countries give more broadcasting time to education than to either information (news, documentaries and so on) or entertainment programs. Of course, few educational broadcasts take place during peak viewing times. In Japan though, more than 60% of broadcasting time is taken up with education of one kind of another — just another example of the businesslike Japanese philosophy. In the U.K., the figure is 56.4%. The Italians have fewer educational programs than anyone else. They don't go in for entertainment either. Only about ten percent of viewing time is devoted to dramas and serials, quiz shows, music, sports, etc. You will find more news information programs on Italian TV than anything else. That's understandable in a country experiencing social and political changes. Italians rely on TV to tell them what's going on — and events are happening almost too fast to follow. The percentage of time the U.S. devoted to news and documentary programs is much smaller. After education, most TV time is given to entertainment. Many of these programs are shown around the world.

1.Based on this passage, the greatest percentage of TV broadcasting hours to educational is in ________.

D.expect TV to tell them the latest news about what is going on in their country

After a particularly busy period at work, I decided to get away from it all by going on a hike in the mountains in southern France.
Before I left, I read an interesting story in a magazine. It read, “Once, while I was riding on a crowded bus, the man sitting next to me threw his cell phone out of the window when his phone rang. I was surprised. He looked at me, shrugged (耸耸肩) and looked away. I had no idea whether it was his or stolen or whether he even knew what a cell phone was or not, but he clearly wanted to be free of it, because it clearly troubled him.”
Billions of people across the world use cell phones. Though cell phones are a wonderful way for communication, they often do the exact opposite. Using cell phones can increase stress within families and friends.
So when I recently returned home, I got rid of my cell phone. Now I go outside without taking my phone with me. I've noticed things in my neighborhood I never noticed before, such as gardens. I've met new people, started conversations with neighbors I didn't speak to before and talked with some of my friends face to face instead of chatting over the phone.
Instead of keeping me off from the world, stopping using my cell phone has helped me get even closer to my family and friends.
语篇解读:作者在拥挤的公交车上看到身旁的人为了追求自由,把来电的手机丢出了窗外而受到启发,他也远离了手机,渐渐的却更靠近了家人和朋友的故事。

6.We can learn from the passage that cell phones ________.
A.are too expensive for many people
B.can also get people into trouble
C.stop people from communicating face to face
D.can make life more interesting
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第三段“Though cell phones are a wonderful way for communication, they often do the exact opposite”意思是虽然电话是一个很棒的交流方式,但是他们经常反道而行,看出它并不是一个真正交流的好方法。故选B。
7.What can we learn about the author?
A.He wants to own a garden now.
B.He always chatted with his neighbors.
C.He used to take his cell phone when going outside.
D.He once rode on a crowded bus in France.

8.The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.tell us not to let cell phones control our lives
B.encourage others to hike with him in France
C.share his experiences in France with us
D.teach us how to get along with neighbors
解析:选A 写作意图题。文章的中心就是手机,而且不要太依赖手机,所以其他选项都不符合,故选A。

Imagine what you could do with a machine that could make things disappear.
For inspiration, you could read some books. In the books of J.R.R. Tolkein, Bilbo Baggins finds a ring that can make him disappear. Of course, there's also poor Harry Potter, who used his invisibility cloak (隐形斗篷) to hide from danger.
Now that you've got some ideas, it's time for the hard part: building the cloak. To do that, you have to give up science fiction and turn to real science. An invisibility cloak has to cheat anything or anyone who might be watching. In order to understand how something can be seen, it's important to understand how we see.
Human beings can only see objects that reflect (反射) light waves. These waves enter the eye and are then processed by the brain. However, if an object doesn't reflect light, then the waves don't enter the eye, and the brain doesn't process. So building an invisibility cloak is building something that doesn't reflect light.
Cummer was part of a team of scientists from Duke University, including David Smith and David Schurig, who built the world's first version (版本) of an invisibility cloak. They had been inspired by the work of a British physicist, John Pendry. He in May said that an invisibility cloak was possible and Pendry was not the only one thinking about a disappearing act. At the same time, a Scottish physicist, UIf Leonhardt published a paper on building invisibility equipment.
“It wasn't easy,” says Cummer.“As often happens in science and research, it didn't work very well the first time. That first cloak didn't work like Harry Potter's — the scientists didn't actually see anything disappear. So the research is still under way.”
语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。通过引入哈利·波特的隐形斗篷,来引出现实中制造隐形斗篷的研究,然而研究一直处于不断尝试并未实现的现状下,说明造隐形斗篷不是件容易的事情。
9.The first two paragraphs serve as a(n) ________.
A.introduction B.explanation
C.comment D.summary
10.Cummer and other scientists got the idea of building an invisibility cloak from _________.
A.the film Harry Potter
B.the work of a British physicist
C.a paper published by a Scottish physicist
D.the book of J.R.R. Tolkein
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“They had been inspired by the work of a British physicist, John Pendry”可以看出,这个想法是受到了“the work of a British physicist”的启发的,故选B。
11.From the text we learn that the research on an invisibility cloak ________.
A.was led by Pendry
B.was very successful
C.was used in most popular movies
D.is still in progress
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据文中最后一句话“So the research is still under way”可知,这个研究仍在进行中,故选D。
12.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Science of Disappearing
B.The Hardest Part of Building a Cloak
C.The Invention of an Invisibility Cloak
D.Turn Science Fiction into Real Science

Where Are We Going, Dad? presents a new generation of men who, in a break from Chinese tradition, now play an active role in their children's lives.
Five star fathers and their children travel around China, riding camels through the western deserts, fishing off the east coast, and selling vegetables for their bus fare home in remote southwestern Yunnan Province. One dad doesn't know how to do his daughter's hair, but give him a couple of days — he'll figure it out. Another one must survive with his son for three days in the desert, where, because neither can cook, the two only eat instant noodles.
These story lines are part of Where Are We Going, Dad?which, since its first show in October, has become one of China's most popular television shows, covering more than 600 million viewers each week. And searches for Where Are We Going, Dad? turn up over 40 million hits on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter.
“In traditional Chinese culture, the common conception of parenthood is that the father is strict and the mother is kind. But on the show, we see fathers who are much gentler on their kids and more concerned with their upbringing,” said Li Minyi, an associate professor of early childhood education at the leading Beijing Normal University.“An important question arises in this show for modern Chinese society — what is the role of fathers in today's China?”
“As they raise their children, parents are growing up at the same time,”said Wang Renping, a popular education expert, in an interview with the Qianjiang Evening News. “They cannot use parenting styles from 20 years ago to guide the development of children born 20 years later.”
The attraction of Where Are We Going, Dad? lies in the chance to have a close look at the lives of popular Chinese stars and their children. Audience fancy watching the failed attempts of star dads making dinner, braiding hair (编头发), and disciplining children — tasks often left to mothers in a society still influenced by the opinion that“men rule outside and women rule inside”.

I have many new teachers in high school, but Lori Runkle, my English Language and Composition teacher, is my favorite teacher.
Ms. Runkle enjoys getting to know more about students, so I have many chances to talk with her after class. I have always wanted to become a journalist (新闻记者). Since Ms. Runkle used to be a journalist back in the United States, she has introduced many helpful journalistic writing skills to me.
Although she is my teacher, Ms. Runkle and I are more like friends. She often invites my classmates and me to take part in different activities outdoors. For example, I went to listen to a journalist's speech, which helped me better understand current events (时事).
Not only does Ms. Runkle talk with me outside of school, she is also a great teacher in the classroom. English Language and Composition is a really hard subject for a second language learner. We felt worried in the beginning, but Ms. Runkle really makes an effort to help us out. In class, Ms. Runkle always encourages students to question everything to keep us active. One part of class I love the most is when groups of students are requested to give speeches on events that are happening in the world. I've often heard the idea that “there are no new stories” in movies and literature. While the audience have expressed their frustrations on this point, I think this complaint has been primarily unfair to Hollywood's creations. Despite their borrowed story points and characters, these movies can be truly inspiring when done correctly.
I've worked at a movie theater for more than three years and have seen how the audience appreciate several of these movies. The Dark Knight Rises was inspired by a comedic book character; yet according to several sources, it got more than D|S354 million domestically (在国内方面) as of Aug. 5. I worked at the weekend, seeing many people attend and enjoy this movie.
Several other recent movies, however, couldn't boast The Dark Knight Rises success, and perhaps this is why the audience are becoming dissatisfied. Usually, sequels (续集) rarely live up to the thrill of the original — it's difficult to satisfy book-lovers with movie adaptations. While 3D was once an impressive new invention, its uniqueness has gone. The audience no longer find 3D movies worth the higher ticket price or the uncomfortable glasses.
I started to consider the issue of new stories while watching The Amazing Spider-Man for the second time last weekend. This movie has been closely compared to the original Spider-Man comics. What truly impressed me about the film, however, is that though it brought in aspects of the story, it truly felt like its own movie.
Why are audiences so frustrated by repeated stories? In researching the phrase“there are no new stories”,I found several variations but no clear indication of the primary origin. The phrase itself is an old thought used to explain our frustration with these repetitions.
In fact we don't want new stories, we want new ways of experiencing them and new ways of being reminded we are humans with various forms of emotions.
语篇解读:验证电影是否受欢迎的标志是看它的票房收入。在今天这个时代,观众们对电影期望的不是新故事,而是用新的方法展示给观众故事的情感内容, 譬如旧故事翻新成电影。
4.The author wanted to tell us that ________.
A.unexpected paths can make old stories successful
B.only new stories can bring new life to Hollywood
C.people are tired of seeing the unfashionable movies
D.reform must be done to the Hollywood movies

5.According to the first paragraph we can know ________.
A.the author shows sympathy for audiences
B.the author dislikes Hollywood's creations at all
C.the author likes any borrowed stories in Hollywood
D.Hollywood's creations can be good when done correctly

A.He has never seen a wonderful film like that.
B.It is worse than the original Spider-Man comics.

B.Adopt new methods to make films.

D.Follow in one's own footsteps.
解析:选B 细节理解题。依据文章尾段的“we want new ways of experiencing them and new ways of being reminded we are humans with various forms of emotions”可知,作者认为好的电影不仅仅采纳新故事,而是用新的方法去演示出故事。因此选B。
