Ⅰ.阅读理解
Pango was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.
Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.
This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future. But the dream didn't last long.
The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.
The villagers decided that they couldn't just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides (杀虫剂)and medicines. Soon there was no money left.
Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't been useless. They had been doing an important job — eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.
Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

The Top Meal of the Day
A recent study shows that many young workers do not have breakfast. One reason is that they want to have a few extra minutes in bed just because they often work far into the night. In addition, a few young girls want to stay slim and often go to work without having breakfast. These make them feel sleepy all day and have bad memories, so it is hard for them to do the job efficiently. It is said that breakfast can provide 30 percent of the whole day's energy one needs. And in order to have a creative mind and better judgment, young workers should start their day with a regular breakfast. So, having breakfast plays an important part in people's lives.

A
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.It is also the most neglected (被忽视的).Common reasons for not eating breakfast include having no time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike and dieting.
Breakfast simply means “break the fast”.Your body spends at least 6 to 12 hours each night in a fasting state. In the morning your body needs energy for the day's work ahead.
A good breakfast should provide 1/3 of your total calorie needs for the day.On average, we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If you don't feel like having breakfast in the morning, try eating a lighter dinner earlier in the evening or save half of your dinner for breakfast in the morning.
If you still aren't hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or toast or have a nutritious (有营养的) mid-morning snack later when you are hungry.
So, you say you are on a diet. Some people fear that eating breakfast will make them hungrier during the day and they will eat more.It is true that eating breakfast is likely to make you feel hungry throughout the day. That is because your body is working correctly.Although you may feel as if you are eating more all day long, in reality you are probably not.
Not eating breakfast can also cause you over-eat, since a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel very hungry later. To make matters worse, since your body is in a slow state, it will not be able to burn those extra calories very efficiently (有效地).If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals throughout the day, you are less likely to become hungry and stuff (填饱) yourself as soon as you begin to eat.
Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, choosing the right food is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits, juice, lean meat and grain products such as bread, rice, noodles and cereals.

Say No to Western Fast Food
With the appearance of fast food chains from the West such as McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut, the Chinese are being introduced to a diet that markedly increases the death rate from certain diseases in population.
Scientific studies from all over the world show that a diet high in animal foods such as pork, beef, including sugar, white flour, white noodles and even white rice, undermines one's health. Deposits of animal fat cling to the walls of arteries, blocking the blood supply to various organs.
This causes diseases in almost every organ, but in particular it damages two of the most vital ones, the heart and brain.
Compare these problems with the excellent health one may enjoy if one consumes good Chinese food. The cook goes out every day, procures great-tasting, fresh vegetables, and then cooks them for just a few minutes so that their nutritional value is preserved and afterwards serves them in a most artistic and elegant fashion. Please cling to your traditional ways of eating. They are far superior to those of the West.
Certainly the fast food chains make lots of money, but who wants to fill the pockets of a foreign food chain that proceeds to ruin the health of the Chinese people?
Another reason why Western fast food restaurants make money is that the food they serve, which comes from assembly lines, will not attract bugs or spoil easily.
How the Chinese could patronize (光顾) these fast food places when the Chinese cook such pleasant food, not just in this country but over the entire world, is beyond my comprehension.
Western restaurants are clean and tastefully decorated. Moreover, these restaurants also do indeed have “good service and an inviting dining atmosphere”.However, Chinese food chains could do likewise if they would organize themselves as the Western chains do.
These lessons in management and decoration are the only ones worth learning from the invasion of this country by the Western fast food chains. In other words, only imitate the style of the restaurants, not the content of the food or the menus in any way, shape or form.
Do not let the desire for money destroy the wonderful tradition that China has established in producing absolutely fantastically tasty as well as healthful food.

Knowing the best way to study will help you to be a best student. By using your time properly, you can do your homework more quickly. Learning to study is not difficult.
The first thing to remember is that you must be willing to learn. It doesn't mean that you must always like the subject. It does mean, however, that you must be willing to do whatever is necessary to learn. Try to understand why it is important and how it will help you now and later to do and learn other things. Knowing mathematics facts will be useful in your whole life. Knowing how to spell makes any kind of writing easier. Sometimes, the subject that you think is going to be uninteresting will be exciting when you begin to work at it and understand it more clearly. Learning things can be fun if you are willing to work with them.
Here is some advice for you: have a certain time each day and a quiet place with good lighting for study, so that you can concentrate on your study without interruptions; have everything ready before you sit down to study, a dictionary, paper, a pen and books; be sure you understand what you should learn before you start; read carefully and pay special attention to the most important things; when memorizing, first find out the main parts and recite the whole thing, check your homework after you finish it; never forget the importance of review and preview.
Don't try to spend a lot of time researching learning methods. There are many students who know many good learning methods but don't study well. They forget that the most important useful learning method is to study hard.

Today, roller skating is easy and fun. But a long time ago, it wasn't easy at all. Before 1750, the idea of skating didn't exist. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin's work was making musical instruments. In his spare time he liked to play the violin. Joseph Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams. People called him a dreamer.
One day Merlin received an invitation to attend a fancy dress ball. He was very pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think how to make a grand entrance at the party. He had an idea. He thought he would get a lot of attention if he could skate into the room.
Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin.
On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin. Everyone was greatly surprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. He rolled on and on. Suddenly, he ran into a huge mirror that was hanging on the wall. Down fell the mirror, breaking to pieces. Nobody forgot Merlin's grand entrance for a long time!

Moving in with a boyfriend causes women to eat more unhealthily and put on weight. But the opposite is true for men, who have long-term health benefits when they move in with a female partner. Dieticians at Newcastle University said both partners try to please each other, and so change their dietary habits to suit their other half.
It leads men to eat more light meals, such as salads, fruit and vegetables, while women choose to make creamier, heavier dishes like curry (咖喱) or rich pasta sauces, which may please their partners.
Women still have the strongest long-term influence over the couple's diet and lifestyle, as they still have the traditional role of the shopper and cook in most households.
The report, by Newcastle University's Human Nutrition Research Centre, reviewed the finding of a variety of research projects from the UK, North America and Australia, which looked at the eating and lifestyle habits of couples.
The research shows that women are more likely to put on weight and increase their consumption of foods high in fat and sugar when they move in with their partners.
Women also use food as a comfort when dealing with emotional stress and have been found to gain weight when a relationship ends, while the same finding has not been observed in men.
Many couples reported food as being central to their partnership, and eating together in the evening was particularly important to many.
Report author and registered dietician Dr. Amelia Lake said, “The research has shown that your partner has a strong influence on your lifestyle and people trying to live healthier lives should take this factor into consideration.”

One morning in midsummer, I headed out to have a good time by myself on the paths of Fontenelle Forest in Bellevue Nebraska.
It was a typically warm and wet summer day in Nebraska. The bugs were everywhere: mosquitoes, flies, bees, you name it. I followed the stream path, which made its way through four-foot high grass. I tried to enjoy the beautiful scenery but had to constantly fan away the bugs in front of my face. I grew increasingly upset.
Eventually becoming angry with the bugs, I stopped and waved my arms all round while turning around in a circle. At the very moment, I saw what I had missed the moment before.
It seems that a deer had been hidden in the tall grass just one foot away from where I stood. I missed it because of my concentration on the bugs. When I was ready to watch it, the deer was forced to abandon its spot. It leaped in the air right before my eyes and rushed off for better cover.
It was too late. I missed it. Now I was attentive and ready to see what was around me, but the sight that might have been seen was gone. I missed the enjoyment of being so close to wildlife! Immediately I wondered what else I was missing, and not just there on the path. I wondered how the bothersome bugs of my life kept me from noticing really important stuff. Maybe it is very useful for my life. This has become a life lesson that I've remembered often. It's affected my visits with my grandma, the time alone with my husband, and get-together with friends. I've learned from my mistake.
