Ways Teens Can Say No to Alcohol and Drugs
Many teens will be asked to try alcohol or drugs by friends or classmates. As parents, the best thing we can do is to give them ways to say no.
Teens can use an excuse, such as:
1.I can't stay;I have to help my dad with something.
2.That stuff makes me sick.
Teens can explain to their friends about the dangers of the stuff:
1.Haven't you heard about the kid in the news who died from doing that?
2.Go ahead if you want to kill yourself—I don't want to.
Teens can also just be honest with their friends:
1.I'm not into that.
2.My mom would kill me if she found out.
3.Forget it.There's no way I'm going to do drugs.
4.I've got more to do with my life.
Once your teens have given their answers, they should be ready to leave. It hardly does any good to argue with someone about alcohol or drugs, and it might make it difficult for your teens to stick with their answers if they stay.
Kids should be confident in their answers.By giving a firm“No”,your teens can actually influence their friends in a good way.Teens tend to follow a strong leader among them, and sometimes all it takes is a positive teen that says no to drugs to keep the whole group away from drugs.

[助读讲解] ①when I was 15是when引导的时间状语从句。 Users who inject the drug are also in more danger为主句,其中包含who引导的定语从句,修饰先行词Users;后面为if引导的条件状语从句。

4
Using cocaine increases⑤ the user's heart rate and blood pressure. As a result, cocaine users sometimes have heart attacks. Smoking crack cocaine also causes anti-social behaviour.
5
By this time, I was addicted to crack cocaine. If I didn't have any drugs, I was in terrible pain. And I had to steal something every day to pay for the drugs⑥.One day, the police took me to the police station.
6
The next day, a doctor came to see me. He told me that I could die if I didn't stop taking crack cocaine, so I took his advice and stopped immediately. Now I work in a centre for drug addicts, helping others to stop taking drugs⑦.
3

I think it is wrong to believe smoking is cool and makes young people appear mature. In fact, smoking is not cool but very dangerous.
First, smoking does great harm to health. Scientific research shows that smoking can lead to heart diseases, cancer and other problems. It is reported that about 5 million people all over the world die from diseases related to smoking each year. Second, it is a waste of money to smoke. Some students even steal money to buy cigarettes. Once you are addicted to it, it is difficult to give it up. What's more, smoking can cause fires easily, which may do great damage to your life and your surroundings.
So give up smoking at once. Only in this way can you keep healthy.

Wizard of Oz(Excerpt)
Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em,who was the farmer's wife.Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles. There were four walls,a floor and a roof, which made one room;and this room contained a rusty looking cookstove,a cupboard for the dishes,a table, three or four chairs, and two beds.Uncle Henry and Aunt Em had a big bed in one corner, and Dorothy a little bed in another corner. There was no garret at all,and no cellar—except a small hole dug in the ground, called a cyclone cellar, where the family could go in case one of those great whirlwinds arose, mighty enough to crush any building in its path.It was reached by a trapdoor in the middle of the floor, from which a ladder led down into the small, dark hole.
When Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could see nothing but the great gray prairie on every side. Not a tree nor a house broke the broad sweep of fiat country that reached to the edge of the sky in all directions. The sun had baked the plowed land into a gray mass, with little cracks running through it.Even the grass was not green, for the sun had burned the tops of the long blades until they were the same gray color to be seen everywhere.Once the house had been painted, but the sun blistered the paint and the rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray as everything else.
When Aunt Em came there to live she was a young, pretty wife. The sun and wind had changed her, too. They had taken the sparkle from her eyes and left them a sober gray;they had taken the red from her cheeks and lips, and they were gray also. She was thin and gaunt, and never smiled now.

Jason's mother sat him down at the dinner table one Saturday afternoon to a feast he could not believe. In front of him were his three favourite desserts.
As Jason wondered what he had done to deserve them, his mother spoke, “Son, you see your favourite desserts, right?” Jason nodded.
His mother continued. “Now, I have some good news and some bad news for you. And then you get to make a decision. The good news is that you get to choose one of these three desserts to eat.”
So, that was it? He could only eat one.
“The bad news is that I have put poison(毒药) in one of the three desserts,”Jason's mother said. “The poison is so poisonous that it will kill you in a matter of minutes. It will be painful and there is no antidote(解药). If you don't die immediately, you will know that you have chosen well.”
Jason's mouth dropped open. “You're joking, right?”
“No, son,” his mother replied. “I'm serious. Now, which dessert do you choose? You have ten seconds.”
“This is crazy,” shouted Jason. “I don't need ten seconds! Only a fool would eat any of the desserts now that you've said eating one may kill him.”
Jason's mother nodded in agreement. “That's right,”she said. “Only a fool would take a one-in-three chance of eating something that could kill him, even if it tasted really great.” Then his mother lifted a package of cigarettes and put them on the table. “Tell me then,” she continued, “why would a teenager ever smoke one of these terrible things when the chance of dying from smoking-related illness is one in three?”
Jason's face turned red. This has become one of the most important lessons for him. He would never choose a poisonous cake as well as a cigarette.

Some teens believe drugs will help them think better, and be more popular. These days, drugs can be found everywhere. Many teens are tempted(诱惑)by the excitement or escape from reality that drugs seem to offer.
Drugs are chemical's that change the way our bodies work. When you put them into your body, drugs find their way in your blood and are taken to parts of your body, such as your brain.
The effects of drugs can be different depending on the kind of drug taken, how much is taken, how often it is used, how quickly it gets to the brain, and what other drugs or food are taken at the same time. Although drugs can make you feel good at first, they can finally do a lot of harm to the body.
There are many kinds of drugs available, and there are many reasons for trying them regularly. People take drugs just for pleasure they believe they can bring. Often it's because someone told them that drugs would make them feel good or that they'd have a better time if they took them.
Many teens use drugs because they're unhappy or think drugs will help them escape their problems. The truth is that drugs don't solve problems—they simply hide feelings and problems. When a drug wears off, the feelings and problems remain, or become worse. Drugs can ruin every aspect of a person's life.

Linda Evans was my best friend like the sister I never had. We did everything together—piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding. When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special times—like my wedding and Linda's.Soon we were busy with children and moving to new houses, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address Unknown”.I had no idea how to find Linda.
Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I need to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.
One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagmans—Linda's married name.“There must be thousands of Wagmans.” I thought, but I still wrote to her.
She called as soon as she got my letter.“Ms. Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagmans is my mother.” Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other's lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there's one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We won't lose each other again!
