Alfred Nobel, the great Swedish inventor and industrialist, was born in Stockholm on October 21, 1833, but moved to Russia with his parents in 1842, where?his father, Immanuel, made a strong position?for himself in the engineering industry.
Immanuel Nobel invented landmine and made a lot of money from the government during the Crimean War, but went bankrupt soon after. Then, the family returned to Sweden in 1859, where Alfred began his own study of explosives in his father’s lab. He had never been to school or university but had taught himself, and by?the time he was twenty, he became a skillful chemist and excellent linguist, speaking Swedish, Russian, German, French and English.
He built up?over 80 companies in 20 different countries. He was always?searching for?a meaning to life. He spent much time and money working on how to end the wars, and the peace between nations, until?his death in Italy in 1896. His famous last will, in which?he left money to provide prizes for outstanding?work in physics, chemistry, physiology, medicine, literature and peace, is a memorial to his interests and ideas. And so, the man is?remembered?and respected long after his death.

Mr. King works in a shop and drives a car for the manager. He drives carefully and can keep calm in time of danger. And he escaped from several accidents. The manager pays him more and the traffic policemen often speak highly of him.
Mr. Baker,one of his friends,works in a factory outside the city. It’s far from his house and he has to go to work by bus. As the traffic is crowded in the morning,sometimes he’s late for the work. His manager warns the young man that he will be sent away unless he gets to his office on time. He hopes to buy a car,but he hasn’t enough money. He decides to buy an old one. He went to the flea?(跳蚤)?market and at last he chose a beautiful but cheap car. He said he wanted to have a trial?(试验)?drive,the seller agreed. He called Mr. King and asked him to help him.
Mr. King examined the car at first and then drove it away. It was five in the morning and there were few cars in the street. At first he drove slowly and it worked well. Then he drove fast. And when he reached a crossing,?the lights turned red. He tried to stop it,?but he failed and nearly hit an old woman who was crossing the street. A policeman told him to stop,?but the car went on until it hit a big tree by the road.
“Didn’t you hear me?” the policeman asked angrily.
“Yes,I did,sir,” said Mr. King,?“Since it doesn’t listen to me,can it obey you?”

Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class, and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers and play the music loudly as they drive on the street.
  Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, and the life of American people. Most of the radio programmes are music.
  Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in many places. Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tape. Some of the money from these tapes comes to the singer. wherever the singer goes, all the young people want to meet him or her. Now the singer has become a national star.
  There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk music. It tells stories about the commom life of Americans. Another is called western or country music. This was started by cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they were watching.
