Water purification system (水净化系统) In the 1960s, NASA (国家航天局) created a way to purify astronauts' drinking water by adding silver ions into spacecraft's water supply system (向航天器供水系统中添加银离子). This technology is now widely used to help keep the water in swimming pools clean.
Camera phones In the 1990s, a team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) worked to create cameras small enough to fit on spaceship. Now lots of cameras use this technology, which makes camera phones possible.
Memory foam (记忆海绵) It was developed by NASA in the 1970s to help make pilots' seats more comfortable. Today memory foam is used to make more comfortable beds, chairs, sofas and even shoes.
Freeze-dried food (冻干食品) NASA did a lot of research on space food. One important thing was that they found a way of keeping food — freeze-drying. It keeps 98% of the nutrients (营养物) of the food, but the food weighs about 80% less. Now freeze-dried food is often used by campers and included in emergency kits (应急包).

In 1924, Frederick Mitchell-Hedges led a team to Lubaantun, an ancient Mayan (玛雅人的) city in modern-day Belize, a country in Central America. There, his daughter, Anna, found one of the most mysterious objects in history: a crystal skull (水晶头骨) that looked like a perfect human head. After that, more crystal skulls appeared in a short period across Europe and North America.
For years, those mysterious crystal skulls have caused a lot of discussion. Even now, no one knows exactly who made them, and no one can say when. Some people believe the Mesoamerican (中美洲的) people made the skulls thousands of years ago. Some stories say they have special powers (能力), such as the ability to make sick people well. Moviemakers love these stories. In the 2008 movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (《夺宝奇兵4》), the skulls had great powers. In the movie, a crystal skull is actually the head of an alien.
However, most scientists don't believe these stories. They think the skulls are more modern. Scientists have found marks on the skulls that they believe only more modern technology could make. Because of this, scientists are certain the skulls are not thousands of years old. Instead, they think the skulls are from the 19th century. Scientists also point to the British Museum's research — researchers have found many Mesoamerican objects, but they have never found a crystal skull. Scientists say this is also evidence to show they are not really Mesoamerican.
Until we know more about the skulls, the mystery — and the debate (争论) — will continue.
( )23. Who found the first crystal skull?
A. Anna. B. Frederick. C. The Mayan people. D. The Mesoamerican people.
( )24. According to some stories, the crystal skulls_____.
A. were made by aliens B. could make people sick
C. were the heads of aliens D. could help people get better
( )25. The underlined word “evidence” means “_____” in Chinese.
A. 机会 B. 观点 C. 证据 D. 成就
( )26. What is the passage mainly about?
A. What the crystal skulls are. B. Who made the crystal skulls.
C. The debate辩论 about the crystal skulls. D. The importance of the crystal skulls.

Justin and Mary woke up early, even though they were on vacation at their uncle's lake house. The night before, Uncle Thomas told them about the Foggy Figure (雾怪) that lived in the lake. Justin and Mary decided to see it before their vacation ended.
“Is it foggy outside?” asked Mary, as Justin looked out the window.
“Yes! Let's go!” said Justin.
It was only 5:00 a.m., so everyone else in the house was still asleep. Mary and Justin came to the boat dock (码头). They saw thick fog (雾) over the lake.
“Do you see anything?” asked Mary.
“Nothing. Do you think Uncle Thomas was just trying to scare us with that story?”
Uncle Thomas did have a good imagination (想象力). He told Justin and Mary many stories, but this was the first scary story. Mary had a feeling that it wasn't made up.
Mary shook her head. “Remember what Uncle Thomas said? The Foggy Figure lives in the lake. We're on the dock. Maybe that's why we can't see him.”
“You want to go out on the water?” asked Justin.
Mary looked around, trying to find Uncle Thomas's boat, but the fog was too thick.
They walked towards the end of the dock and saw the outline (轮廓) of the boat. They carefully got into the boat.
Mary was nervous. “See anything?” They looked around, and slowly, the fog began to lift. Mary turned around and shouted, “The Foggy Figure!” It was in the boat with them!
Justin and Mary hugged each other in fear, but then they heard a laugh. It was from Uncle Thomas. “I knew that story would get you two out of bed early enough to take a boat ride with me.”
Justin and Mary were happy that there was no Foggy Figure.
