Stilton Cheese Rolling
May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes , roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane. Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors arc served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations?signed off?for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

31. How does the author sound when telling the story?

When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.In my first literature class, Mrs.Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. Dear Mike,
It’s great to hear from you and I am glad to know that you are holding a Chinese-culture Week. I’d like to tell you about the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It is celebrated on the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It falls on different days in different years. It is one of the oldest festivals in China, with a history of more than 2,000 years. It is a festival that reminds us of Qu Yuan, an ancient patriotic poet of the Warring States Periods.
The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. Many people look forward to it and practice boating day and night several months before the race day. It is obvious that the festival has become part of life. All people will try their best to turn up and watch the race, the winner of which will be awarded cup and prize.
On the Dragon Boat Festival in China, it is a custom to eat Zongzi, which has different shapes and various fillings with reed or bamboo leaves. It is my favorite part of the festival.
Hope this can help you learn more about China.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours
