M: How did it go?
W: Well, okay, I suppose. I got there at five to nine this morning, which I thought was fine, as I’d thought I was supposed to start at nine, but in fact — I can’t believe they hadn’t told me this — the office opens at eight thirty, so in fact I was late. But it wasn’t really my fault.
M: That’s not fair, is it?
W: Well, they weren’t angry or anything, so that was okay. I was met by Mrs. Collins. She’s my new boss — she’s really nice, actually — and she gave me my company ID card and took me up to the fifth floor. That’s where the art department is.

录音答：No. It’s nothing like that! We all work in this huge room and, listen to this — we haven’t even got our own desks! Everyone has a little box to put their things in, which you lock in a cupboard at the end of the day, and in the morning you get your box and just go to an empty desk. It doesn’t matter which one it is.

录音答：Well, most of the people in my department are designers like me, and some of them seem quite interesting. To be honest, though, I didn’t really get the chance to talk to many of them. I was working all day.

A Heart of Gold
Mrs Goodwill lived alone in a big old house. She wasn’t strong enough to do a lot of cleaning so the place was dirty. The paint was peeling off the window frames because she couldn’t afford to keep the house in good condition. She wanted to sell the place and move somewhere smaller, but nobody would buy it.
Mrs Goodwill never used the upstairs, so she decided to rent it out in order to earn some extra cash. She advertised in the paper and rented the rooms to the first person who called. He was a young man called Mick, with a shaved head, a shabby leather jacket, and a broken nose. One day, Mrs Goodwill’s daughter Hillary came to visit, and when she saw Mick, she was horrified. “Mother, he looks like a criminal,” she said, “If I’d been here, I wouldn’t have let him through the door!”
Hillary didn’t visit again until three months later, and when she arrived, she couldn’t believe her eyes. The house was beautifully clean, all the window frames were newly painted, and Mick was in the garden cutting the grass. “Mick’s been helping me a lot,” Mrs Goodwill explained. “That boy’s got a heart of gold!”
