All Together Now!

Have you ever heard of homemade music? That's right ─homemade music. Music that is made at home can be lots of fun. And all of the family can take part in it. You don't have to have good voices. And you don't need to buy a musical instrument. What a family needs is the willingness to make music.
A singing game my family like is Crazy Voices. Each person sings a different song. But everybody sings at the same time! We do sound a little crazy. But the tunes (曲调) all fit together. Sometimes we get all mixed up. Then we just hum the songs. Or we put our hands over our ears. Then we try it again. And crazy voices fill the air.
We really have homemade music when we play the Tap﹣a﹣Glass. Why? We make the instrument ─ that's the Tap﹣a﹣Glass. This takes some time. First, we hunt for drinking glasses that have a good ring to them. We tap them with a spoon to find out. We need eight glasses ─ one for each tone (音调) of the scale. How do we get different tones? By putting different amounts of water in the glasses. The more water, the lower the tone. After a while, we have all eight tones of the scale. Now the Tap﹣a﹣Glass is ready. One person takes the spoon and taps out a simple tune. We always give the player time to practice a little bit first. Then we try to guess the name of the song.
Sometimes we do echo (回声) singing. In echo singing, we sing the same song. We pick a simple tune. One person begins to sing. Then a second person starts ─ right after the first singer! Sure enough, we have homemade music with a homemade echo!
My family have fun with homemade music. We enjoy the time being together. Sometimes we get all mixed up. Sometimes we have to stop because we are laughing so hard. But more importantly, we can make music ourselves. To us, it sounds great.

(1)What does a family need to have homemade music?
(2)Which singing game do the writer's family like?
(3)How do the writer's family get different tones with the glass?
(4)In echo singing, do they sing the same song?
(5)Why do the writer's family have fun with homemade music?

Paperless homework will affect students' handwriting
A growing number of primary schools in Shanghai are now encouraging "paperless" homework. Instead of writing with a pen, children can finish their homework simply by "surfing and typing" on their iPad screens.
Many people welcome the use of this new technology in schools. And it isn't difficult to understand why digital homework could be the next big thing in education : it reduces waste; makes it easier for teachers to collect homework; and now that everything else is digitalized, homework should too.
But there's an overlooked downside to online homework,as it shows an alarming trend(趋势): how technology is affecting physical handwriting.
In today's digital age, handwriting is already a weakening skill. Can you remember the last time you used a pen? For me,it was when I had to fill out a form at work. To be honest,I couldn't write quite a few characters and had to type them on my iPhone to remind me of how to write them correctly. I know I'm not alone. There are more saying they share similar embarrassment (尴尬) when asked to write by hand.
In a time when computers, smart phones and keyboards are widely used in the world, is handwriting even important? The answer is yes. Handwriting plays an important role in the learning process. Writing a character is more difficult than typing. It requires the body and mind work together actively. So for school﹣age children, writing not only allows them to memorize characters, but also trains their brains the way typing can't.
Too many children, lost in technology, lie on a sofa or in bed with their smartphones or iPads ﹣ a seldom mentioned side effect of modern technology, which may lead to physical problems later.
All said, I'm not saying that digital homework should be canceled. Digitalization is an unstoppable trend. But for courses such as Chinese and English language, I hope to see digital homework introduced later into the courses, at least after children have had the ability to write characters and spell words well.

(1)How do children finish their paperless homework? By "suffering and typing" on their iPad screens.
(2)Why do many people welcome digital homework? Because it reduces waste;makes it easier for teachers to collect homework;and now that everything else is digitalized, homework should too.
(3)What happened when the writer used a pen to fill out a form at work? He/She couldn't write quite a few characters and had to type them on his/her iPhone to remind he/her of how to write them correctly.
(4)Why is handwriting important for school﹣age children? Handwriting plays an important role in the learning process. Writing a character is more difficult than typing. It requires the body and mind work together actively.
(5)What does the writer think of digital homework? He/She thinks that it is an unstoppable trend. But for courses such as Chinese and English language, it should be introduced later into the courses.

Return to the moon

It might not be long until humans uncover the secrets of the far side of the moon. China's Chang'e 4 robotic probe (探测器), which is set to become the first probe to land on the moon's far side, was launched successfully on Dec 8, Xinhua reported.
The moon rotates (自转) at the same speed that it orbits (绕…运行) Earth. Therefore, the same side of the moon always faces Earth. The far side of the moon is the side that we cannot see. We don't know much about it so far.
However, the far side of the moon is an ideal (理想的) place for scientific research. It is exposed (暴露) to solar winds that may have formed unique minerals (矿物质) and other resources. And since the far side is less affected by Earth's gravity, scientists can make clearer observations of deep space from there, according to China Daily.
But it is hard to land on the far side of the moon. Spacecraft that land there cannot receive any radio signals from Earth. To solve this problem, China launched a relay satellite (中继卫星) called Queqiao into space in May. Through Queqiao, scientists can control and operate Chang'e 4 and make sure it will land in a specific area.
The probe's travel time is also important. Chang'e 4 is expected to land on the moon on Jan 2, China Daily reported. It will travel through space for more than 20 days before landing. This is longer than Chang'e 3, which was in space for about 12 days before landing.
The travel time was changed because scientists want Chang'e 4 to land on the moon when it is daytime. This way, the spacecraft's solar panels (太阳能板) can receive energy from the sun and allow the probe to start working. A single day on the moon is about 28 days on Earth. Therefore, Chang'e 4 will keep orbiting the moon before landing as it waits for daytime, according to Sun Zezhou, chief designer of Chang'e 4.
Did you know? Chang'e 4 is taking some plant seeds and eggs to the moon. It is hoped that Chang'e 4 will be able to do experiments with them. These will be the first biological experiments to take place on the moon.

(1)Will Chang'e 4 be the first probe to land on the far side of the moon?
(2)What does the far side of the moon refer to?
(3)What research may scientists do on the far side of the moon?
(4)How did Chinese scientists solve the problem of no signals?
(5)Why do scientists want Chang'e 4 to land in daytime?

18.(10分)Do you know your neighbors? Do you often talk with them? Good neighbors are just like our friends and relatives. They are the important people in our lives. They make our lives more pleasant and give us a sense of who we are, both as an individual and as a member of the community. Here's how to develop your relationships with these very important people in your life.
Start a conversation. Often neighbors don't even know each other's names. However most neighbors enjoy making small talk with each other in their community. You can ask how their kids are or what they think of the prices at the supermarket. But the best way to break the ice is to smile, wave, and say hello to your neighbors.
Be friendly to the newcomers. Your new neighbors may be feeling lonely, especially if they're far from home, and might expect a friendly face. If they have kids, tell them where the children play in the neighborhood. Introduce the best places to eat and shop. Invite them over for coffee or tea, give them your phone number, and point to your house as you say good﹣bye.
Develop better relationships. Return anything that you borrow from a neighbor, such as tools, in good repair and as soon as you've finished with them. Make sure that your car is not blocking their doorway. Such small actions will help you build up a good relationship with your neighbors.
Make time for your friendship. If you value a friendship with your neighbors, spend time with them. Why not invite them to a barbecue or weekend party? You can write a card to invite them to your party. Then, you can make a call to them ahead. In this way, you will know what your neighbors like. You can plan for proper food and music.
Care about the details. In a good relationship, it's really the little things that count. When your neighbors carry a lot of things, you can give them a hand. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor when it rains. If you care about them, they will give you a surprise, too. The respect for your neighbors' feelings can develop your relationship with them.

IG, a Chinese esports club, won the world championship title in LOL (League of Legends) in 2018. It beat European team 3:0 in South Korea. It was the first time that a club from China's LPL (League of Legends Pro League) won the title in the world championship's eight﹣year history. So what is esports?
Esports (Electronic Sports) is a form of competition using video games between professional players. It is not only a simple game in a sense, but a sport in which players use electronic equipment to play against each other in intelligence. It can improve the players' thinking ability, heart﹣to﹣eye coordination (协调), willpower and develop team spirit.
In 2003, esports became the 99th sport in China. However, esports is different from traditional sports and online games. Traditional sports athletes mainly train their physical ability and skills, such as muscle memory, exercising and dieting; while esports athletes' training is mostly about the mind, such as studying strategies (策略) and new updates for the game.
The industry has been developed for more than 10 years, but the public usually hold the opinion that playing online games has no benefit but taking one's attention away from their duties. In fact, there are several differences between esports and online games:
? First, the basic features. Online games are entertainment games while esports is a sport. Esports is an intellectual competition between people in an organized environment created by information technology.
? Second, the game rules. Esports has clear game rules. Its biggest feature is strict time and round limitations. However, online games are lack of clear rules of the game. Without time limit, it's easy for people especially teenagers to be addicted to (沉迷于) it.
? Third, the sports spirit. Esports competitions between athletes pay great attention to fair sports spirit. Some online games only need to recharge (充钱) to gain advantages, which is the main difference between esports and online games.
In the upcoming 2022 Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, esports will officially become a medal event. Esports is a new sporting activity. It will take a long time to grow into a mature industry like NBA (the National Basketball Association of the US). Let's have a better understanding of esports and expect its bright future.

After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender's name and was just very pleased with the beautiful white flower in soft pink paper.
But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged this imagining. She'd ask me if there was someone for whom I had done a special kindness. Perhaps it was the old man whom I looked after when he was ill. As a girl, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy.
One month before my graduation, my father died. I felt very sad and didn't want to go to the coming graduation dance at all. And I didn't care whether I had a new dress or not. But my mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved and lovable. In truth, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia ﹣ lovely, strong and perfect with perhaps a bit of mystery.
My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 22. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.

18.(10分)About 800 years ago, a Chinese man named Wang Hu made the world's first rocket, but unluckily he lost his life with it. It was not until April 24, 1970 that China sent its first satellite Dongfanghong﹣1to space successfully.
To celebrate the first big success for the country's space development, April 24 is now China's Space Day, which started this year. While celebrating, China also announced(宣布)new plans to make a space station and go to Mars and further space.
A space station is like a home for astronauts in space.Astronauts live and work on a space station and spaceships can even park there. China plans to finish building its space station in 2022.
According to China's top space scientist Zhou Jianping, by that time, becoming an astronaut will be a normal job. Astronauts are needed more than ever before. They need to be able to finish more tasks. So far, China has been choosing astronauts mainly from pilots. In the future astronauts will also be picked from engineers, doctors and space technology experts.
Another plan is about Mars.In order to search Mars, China will send a probe(探测器)first to Mars around 2020. It will land there and even bring back things from the Mars.
It's such a big plan! Only by doing this can China say it has truly started the exploration of deep space. And the exploration will help us understand how the universe changes.

Tornado Chaser

Do you know? In June 2003, South Dakota experienced 67 tornados in one day! In the U.S., tornadoes (龙卷风) are responsible for 80 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries each year. Although they happen very often, tornadoes are difficult to predict. Why? Tornadoes develop from storms, but only some storms can become tornadoes. Meteorologists (气象学家) don't know where and when a storm will touch the ground and turn into a tornado. Today, the warning time for a tornado is usually just 13 minutes.
Tim Samaras is a tornado chaser. His job is to find tornadoes and follow them. When he gets close to a tornado, he puts a special tool on the ground. This tool measures things like temperature, humidity, and wind speed of a tornado. With this information, Samaras can learn what causes tornadoes to develop. If meteorologists understand this, they can warn people about tornadoes sooner and save lives.
How does Samaras hunt tornadoes? It's not easy. First, he has to find one. Tornadoes are too small to see using weather satellites (卫星). So Samaras can't just depend on these tools to find one. Instead he waits for tornadoes to develop. Every May and June, Samaras drives about 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) across an area known as Tornado Alley, looking and hoping to find a tornado.
Once Samaras sees a tornado, the chase begins. But a tornado is hard to follow. Some tornadoes change direction several times﹣for example, moving east and then west and then east again. When Samaras finally gets near a tornado, he puts his special tool on the ground. Being this close to a tornado is frightening. There is rubbish flying in the air. The wind is blowing at high speed. He must get away quickly.
The work is risky, even for a skilled chaser like Samaras. But danger won't stop his hunt for the perfect storm.
