Hollywood is a neighbourhood in Los Angeles,California. It used to be the historical centre of movie studios and movie stars. And the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonymy(转喻)of American cinema, But these are only memories. Hollywood isn't quite the same as it used to be. Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down. Movie-makers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas.
Hollywood is facing big challenges! The film industry is changing fast. Teenagers will go out to see the movies. The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home. Older people mostly stay at home to watch drama series, like Dynasty. These "soap operas",as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful houses and wearing beautiful clothes. But the actors and the actresses are nearly middle-aged.
Though soap operas keep the movie-makers of Hollywood in business, big movies are still being made in America. But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood. New York is the most important new centre, and there are many others as well. Movie-makers have realized that they don't need Hollywood any more. They use modern cameras and real houses instead of expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California. They are offering better working conditions and lower cost.

Every car buyer will choose the colour he likes best. Why does he choose this colour instead of another one? That is decided by a lot of factors such as his age,his family’s future plan, the car’s size and even the cultural(文化的)and local influences.Yet one colour—silver—has stood up to the time.
That’s why you can see so many silver cars running in streets, and it continues to be the colour that is used in almost every car factory.A recent study shows that silver, though losing market share(份额),is still the first colour of choice in America,Europe and Asia.
Silver is also very popular in some sports cars.Even if silver isn’t the first choice,it’s
probably the second. Why is silver so popular? Maybe the colour represents modern life. Also, silver can make cars look wonderful in shape. With dark colours,it’s difficult to see the shape.White doesn’t do it,either.
It’s also practical.Silver,like a lot of light colours,hides dirt.
Grey, blue, white and white pearl, black and red are the other colours most preferred by car buyers in the market. The study also shows that car producers have discovered new colours that have become popular among car buyers, such as the new, dark blue and green or warm, light brown.

There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today-the wheel (轮子). This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.
For hundreds of years after that, there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn't have to explore (探索) much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions: the helicopter (直升飞机)in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, and jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon (尼龙) came in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.
By this time most people had a very good life. Man has a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.
In 1969 man took his biggest step from the earth to the moon. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just the beginning. New inventions will some day allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

Frederick M. Hess is the director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. He says that a long summer vacation is meaningless in today’s world.
Can American students afford to take a summer vacation? In a summer vacation, millions of kids spend valuable time sending messages, watching TV, playing video games and doing shopping in the mall. They will also be putting their academic(学业的) futures at risk.
Summer vacation once made sense in the past when you didn’t need an education to get a good job. But now things have changed. For today’s students, academic skills are important to students’ future success, but such skills are influenced in the summertime. Many nations don’t give kids an American-style summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive(连续的) weeks of vacation. Most American school offer up to thirteen weeks. To take part in the competition in the global marketplace, Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors.
Summer vacation also causes challenges for today’s families. In the 1960s, more than 60% of families had a stay-at-home Mom. Now two-thirds of American children live in families where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be a burden(负担). Someone must watch the kids.
But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement. Researchers have found that disadvantaged students lose basic ground in the summertime.
A longer school year does not have to cause hard boring work. Instead, it should allow time-pressed teachers to have richer and more imaginative lessons. Schools would have more time to devote to sports, languages, music and the arts. Summer vacation can be a great thing. But in the 21st century, it may also be out of date.
