"A death befalls all men alike, I'll keep a loyal heart to make a name in history", the saying of Wen Tianxiang tells us that he would rather die than surrender, and die for his country's noble national integrity.
Confucius and Laozi are the greatest sages in ancient China. Li Bai and Du Fu were famous poets in ancient China.
3. What can we learn from the people who are the great heroes?
1) We should learn their good qualities from them. Such as reliable, brave, wise, active, devoted, friendly.
2)We should learn their selfless spirit and generous, the hard-working from them.
3) We should learn their determined, reliable, brave, friendly, kind and honest from them.

9. The next one is Nelson Mandela, all of us know him. I suppose you can say something about him.
10. Next is the astronaut Neil Armstrong, What do you know about him?

1. Are all famous people great people?
No, I don’t think so. Most great people are also famous people, but famous people may not be great people.
2. What is the difference between a famous and a great person?
A famous person may be well-known but if he or she has not gone through struggles and difficulties for their noble cause, they can not be called a great person. For example, many film stars are very famous, but some of them are not great.
3. What kind of person can be called a great person?
A great person has good qualities. He/She is someone who devotes his/her life to helping others. He/She should be devoted, determined, generous, hard-working, unselfish, brave. He should follow his ideas and never lose heart when he is in trouble. He/She usually gives up something to achieve his goals. He/She should be willing to do public service work without any pay. He/She should be active in social activities and get on well with others etc.
4. Are these famous people also great people? Why?
Yes, I think they are. In my opinion, they are all not only famous persons but great men as well. Because all the six persons had the qualities of the great men. They were all devoted, generous, unselfish and determined. They like to help others and they like to devoted their life to their countries or to the whole world.
5. Why do you think William Tyndale is a great person?
William Tyndale had a strong belief that all people should be able to read the Bible for themselves. So he translated and printed the Bible into English although he was not allowed to do so. He went through a lot of struggles and difficulties and even sacrificed his life to realize his dream. He devoted his whole life to his ideas. Therefore, he was a great man.
6. Now, look at Doctor Bethune. What do you think of him?
Doctor Bethune devoted his whole life to fighting against the German Nazis and Japanese. Every Chinese person know him because he helped China to fight against Japanese. He was an selfless and brave man who devoted his whole life to the the anti fascist war.
Doctor Bethune was devoted, determined, generous, hard-working and brave. So he was a great man.
7. Now, let’s come to Sun Yat-sen. What do you think of him?
Sun Yat-sen was a Chinese statesman who led the revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty and founded the Republic of China. He was a great man who had all good qualities that a great man has.
8. Now, look at Mahatma Gandhi. What do you know about him? Was he a great man?
Yes, of course. He was a very great man. He fought for his country to be free from the United Kingdom in a peaceful way, for which, he gave up his rich life and sacrificed his thriving law practice, he adopted a simple life to live among the millions who lived in poverty during his freedom struggle.
9. The next one is Nelson Mandela, all of us know him. I suppose you can say something about him.
Nelson Mandela was the first President of South Africa, who was the country's first black head of the state. He served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.
Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and he was selected as one of the greatest people in South Africa in 2004.
Of course, he was a very great man and he was very famous in the world.
10. Next is the astronaut Neil Armstrong, What do you know about him?
Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon in the whole world. He was the person who made people round the world realize that space exploration was truly possible.
Ever since Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon back, people have become accustomed to the idea of space travel. He was the pioneer of human exploration of the universe.
Neil Armstrong was devoted, determined, hard-working, brave. Therefore, he had good qualities of great man too.
II. Look at the adjectives in Warming Up on the book, and point out the words for good qualities and for bad qualities. You can add some other words for good or bad qualities.

III. Let's review the key words and expressions in the practice we made just now.
1. devoted a. 忠诚的;献身的;奉献的
devote v. 献身于……;致力于……
He is a devoted train spotter.
他是个酷爱看火车的人。
The woman was a totally devoted and caring mother. 这位女士是一位无私的慈母。
He's devoted to music. 他致力于音乐。
2. determined a. 确定的;坚定的;毅然的
determine v. 确定;决定;(使)下决心
He is a very determined and strong-willed person. 他是个有决心有毅力的人。
He is obstinate and determined and will not give up. 他非常顽固,而且又铁了心,是不会放弃的。

You wronged him when you said that he was dishonest. 你说他不诚实是错怪他了。

8. strong-willed a. 意志坚强的;坚持己见的
He is pretty optimistic and strong-willed.
他很乐观和坚强。
