就在（当）要变红灯时，一辆小汽车突然出现。



when和while的区别
(一) when，while都有“当……时候”的意思。when既可表示某一点时间，也可以表示某一段时间。在when引导的时间状语从句中，其谓语动词可以是延续性的，也可以是非延续性的短暂性动词（也称终止性动词、瞬间动词 表示不能延续的动作,这种动作发生后立即结束。 如:open, die, close, begin, finish, come, go, move, borrow, lend, buy等), ，可与主句中的谓语动词同时发生，也可在其后发生。
(二) while只能表示某一段时间，不能表示某一点时间。在while引导的时间状语从句中，其谓语动词只能是延续性的，而且也只能与主句中的谓语动词同时发生或存在。


例：I was watching TV when my father got home. （由when 引导的时间状语从句，如果主句是过去进行时，从句要用一般过去时。（是表示一个动作正在进行的时候，另一个动作突然发生了，强调后一动作发生的突然性）

2.Tom was reading a book when I saw him.(此句不能用while)




例：1. I met with an old friend while(when) I was walking along the street. （While 所引导的时间状语只能指时间段（即表示某一时间段内发生的动作）。它引导的时间状语从句中，谓语动词必须是延续性动词。）

例：2. She was cooking while she was singing. （当主句和从句的动作都是延续性或同时发生的，两句都用过去进行时的时候，多用while 引导）
