12、A new library in Tianjin—Tianjin Binhai Public Library—recently became an online hit. The Daily Mail described it as the “world’s ultimate (终极的) library”, while the word “breathtaking” was the choice of Newsweek magazine. One look at the library and you’ll see why. With its futuristic (未来主义) design and walls loaded with books, it’s the dream library of every book lover.
But as the surprise continues, there’s a burning question lying in the back of our minds: When physical bookstores are closing down one by one, what makes libraries safe from the wave of digitalization (数码化)? And do we really still need libraries now that we’ve got the Internet in our hands?
Reporter Ian Clark has the answer. “Libraries are not declining in importance—people are simply changing the way they use them,” he wrote on the Guardian website.
What Clark means is that libraries have shifted from simply being storehouses of books to a medium to help “bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots” according to website Libraries Are Essential. Since not everyone can afford a smartphone, a tablet or an Internet connection, and not everyone has the know-how to search the Internet correctly and efficiently, it’s public libraries that make sure that these resources and technologies are available to a larger group of people.
“Nobody is trying to sell you anything in the library. There is no pressure to buy and there is no judgment of your choices/’ Anne Goulding, a professor at Victoria University in New Zealand, wrote on the Newsroom website. “There are few other spaces that you can just ‘be’ without somebody questioning your presence or your motivation.”

12、 Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu’s imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life – wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light-years away.
But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn’t expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Perhaps neither did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov 9 in Washington DC, he would win the 2018 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the award.
In his acceptance speech, Liu said that he owed his imagination to Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008), a famous UK sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke’s 1968 classic novel 2001: A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him.
“My mind opened up like never before. I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea,” Liu said. “That night, in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was awed (使……敬畏) by the mystery of the universe.”
But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational.
In The Three-Body Problem, for example, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading Earth. But unlike other alien stories, Liu talks more about relationships between civilizations(文明), rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering Earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his visions and solutions are based on “hard science”. Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams.
1.What do we know about Liu Cixin?
A.He became a full-time writer when he was young.
B.He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood.
C.He is the first Asian to win the Arthur C. Clarke Award.
D.He is the first Chinese winner of the Hugo Award.
2.Liu Cixin’s words are used mainly to show ______.
A.his interest in mysteries of the universe
B.his love of reading science fiction
C.his confusion when he started writing
D.his feeling after reading Clarke’s work
3.What’s the text mainly about?
A.Liu Cixin’s achievements and writing style.
B.Liu Cixin’s contributions to science fiction.
C.How Liu Cixin became a sci-fi writer.
D.How Liu Cixin started a new sci-fi style.

4、Chances You Will Not Regret Taking in Life
Life is about trusting yourself and taking chances, losing and finding happiness, learning from experience, appreciating the memories, and realising the importance of taking every step. ① You also need to realise that every step is worth your effort. You’ve got to give yourself a fair chance. So here are some chances you will not regret taking in life.
Trust your intuition (直觉) on new opportunities. Life is too short to wait. Every new day is another chance to change your life. ② Trust that little voice inside your head that says, “ What if…” and then do it bravely once you decide.
③ You have everything you need within you to become the best possible version of yourself. Believe that you can. Believe that you’ve capable of pushing harder and farther than you have before. Believe that you’ve young enough, old enough and strong enough to achieve your goals. Don’t let false belief stop you from moving beyond yourself. And certainly don’t get disturbed by other people who are not on track.
Make moves in the face of fear. It’s often difficult to grow into your greatest self, but it9s a tragedy to let the lie of fear stop you. ④ Go after your goals. Never let your fear decide your future.
Smile anyway. Don’t let one bad moment ruin your day. ⑤ Stress begins when your worry list is longer than your gratitude list. Happiness begins when your gratitude list is longer than your worry list. So find something to be thankful for today. Be sure to appreciate what you have got. Be thankful for the little things in life that mean a lot.
