Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
I've been really into surfing(冲浪) for more than fifteen years. I started learning in England, then I began going on surfing holidays abroad with my friends — we went to Bali in Indonesia, and also South Africa. After that I started wanting bigger challenges (挑战), so five years ago I decided to try the really big waves in Hawaii. Of course they can be dangerous, but it's worth it for the excitement you get when you're riding them. It's a magical feeling, like flying above the ocean, and for those few seconds you totally forget everything else in your life.
—James
I started climbing about twenty years ago, and I've now climbed three of the highest five mountains in Europe. It can be dangerous, and I've had some scary moments, but the sense of achievement when you reach the top is amazing.
——Mike
Part of me had always wanted to try skydiving (跳伞), but I was really afraid the first time. The worst bit was just before I jumped out of the plane — I wanted to be back on the ground, not 4,000 metres up in the air. As a beginner you don't do it on your own — you're attached to the professional (职业的) instructor who helps you land safely. That first time was five years ago, and since then I've done more than twenty jumps on my own.
—Susan
I became interested in snowboarding the very first time I tried it. I soon realised I had a natural talent (天赋) for it, and it wasn't long before I was winning competitions and getting a bit of prize money. My dream is to be able to make my living just from boarding, so I now take three months off work every winter to perfect my skills.
—Teresa

Where do you want to live? The countryside or the city? Well, the countryside may be a nice place for you if you're retired. But if you want to have a colorful social life or do something interesting, the city is probably your best choice.
What does living in the city mean? Well, in the city, besides cars, you can have many other options (选择). For example, walking is often an option. If it's not, getting around by public transport is also a wonderful experience: you and others are on the same boat, so you can take your time to read or listen to music before reaching work or going home. And, from London to Paris, Amsterdam to Vancouver, you will be lucky enough to be able to bike everywhere. It can make you both fitter and happier.
Besides that, in the city, you_will_never_be_the_underdog. If you're a fan of Goth music, go to London's Camden Town. You can find people sharing the same interest with you there. Do you like playing in netball teams? If so, you'll certainly find a club. If you love mushroom-hunting, start your own group. In Sydney, most of the local parks are also home to skateboarders, tai chi lovers and tight-rope walkers. There's something for everyone.
I don't know about you, but it would be a shame for me if I die on the way to the hospital, or give birth on the side of a road. It probably won't happen in the city. You can order anything from online stores and receive it the next day. That's really a miracle. Museums, libraries and parks are easy to reach, and most of them are free.
Last but not least, cities teach patience and empathy because, after all, you're all living in this space together. Compromise (折中) is a great solution to living in the city. Are your neighbors not satisfied with your Saturday party? Are there any kids making you angry by listening to rap music on the bus? Do they always share your space? But even so, you have to reach an agreement and live in peace with them.

What do hand gestures mean around the world? Here are some common hand gestures. If you don't want to use them wrongly, read on.
In most of the world, the thumbs-up (翘起大拇指) sign means the same thing. You are basically saying that “everything is OK” or showing acceptance or praise. But in the Middle East, it is a very bad gesture. Well, let's just say it's better to avoid it if you're there. Putting your thumb up in Thailand is not a good way to make friends, either.
The sign of the horns (角) is a hand gesture with different meanings and uses in different cultures. It is formed by extending the index finger (食指) and the little finger while holding other fingers down. In most of the world, “rock on!” is the first thing that comes to mind when you see these horns. But in some countries like India, it is the same as “touch wood” in meaning, which is related to keeping bad luck away.
In most of the world, people will consider the beckoning (招手示意) sign to be “come here”. But this gesture also has other meanings. In Japan and other parts of Asia, beckoning is a sign of disrespect and it's only used for dogs or other home-raised animals. You really need to take this seriously because in Philippines, you could even be taken into prison for using it!
The “V” sign, if done correctly, is safe all around the world. The “V” sign was used as a sign of peace, and specially became popular during the Vietnam War. Today the whole world considers this as a positive sign, connected with peace or being happy. However, the “V” sign can have a negative meaning if it appears with the hand palm facing yourself. In England and Australia, doing the sign this way basically means “up yours”.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。同一手势在不同文化中含义可能会不一样,我们在别的国家使用这些手势时需要小心。

A.It's very widely used in Japan.
B.It's usually used by prisoners in Philippines.
C.It means something good in most Asian countries.
D.It can cause trouble for people using it in Philippines.

Four ways to make someone else smile
Although we are often worried about our own problems, or the way people think of us, making someone else smile through a simple act of kindness can completely turn your mood (心情) around, too. Here is a list of ideas to help you.
◆Send a handwritten letter
__1__. Putting pen to paper and writing a few words to a friend can be an easy way to make a difference. Even a postcard with a couple of sentences could really make someone's day — all for the price of a stamp!
◆Volunteer
Whether you volunteer at your local youth group or take dogs from shelters for a walk, the simple fact that you are giving up your time to help someone else is amazing. Make sure you can find one that is right for you. __2__ — it could be once a week or a couple of times a year.
__3__
Whether you're creative or not, taking time to make something for someone else shows how much you appreciate them. Even if you think you're not creative, the recipient (接受者) will feel lucky to get such a special gift that you put your time into. __4__!
◆Tell someone “I love you”
Before you do that, it can be anyone — your mum or dad, grandparents, or friend. And you don't even have to say “I love you”. __5__, or remind your mum that you love her. Sometimes, in our busy lives, we forget to take a moment to tell people what they mean to us.
A.Make something for a special person
B.Smile at everyone you see every single day
C.It doesn't necessarily have to take up all your time
D.These kind actions don't take that much time from our busy lives
E.Nowadays, it's really a surprise to receive a letter through the post
F.Perhaps you can tell a friend that you appreciate all they are to you
G.Some ideas could include a card, painting, drawing, song, poem or cake

4.G G项中的“a card, painting, drawing, song, poem or cake”是对本段建议中的“creative”和“make something”的举例。
5.F 由该空前的“you don't even have to say ‘I love you’”可知,F项中的“tell a friend that you appreciate all they are to you”和该空后的“remind your mum that you love her”都是不直接说出“I love you”的办法。

What would your life be like if you were Albert Einstein? What clothes would be in your wardrobe (衣橱) if you were Madonna?
Well, now you can discover the answer to all these questions and many more at the Fame Hotel in California. Ten miles outside Los Angeles, the Fame Hotel promises to answer the question “What if?”. When you check into the hotel, you choose a room. Each room has a name. There's Clint Eastwood on the second floor and Elvis Presley on the third floor. In total, the Fame Hotel has 32 rooms, most of which are named after stars of Hollywood or music. But there are also famous writers (Mark Twain and Agatha Christie) and even some scientists and sports stars, such as Mike Tyson.
When you enter the room, you enter the life of that person. There are pictures everywhere. The owner of the hotel has tried to fill the room with objects, clothes, even food that he thinks the stars would have liked. Marilyn Monroe's wardrobe is full of beautiful white dresses, and Albert Einstein doesn't have any socks in his wardrobe because the real Einstein never wore them! If you choose Mike Tyson's room, you'll be able to practice boxing in one corner of the room. And there's even a skipping rope (跳绳) too!
I spoke to one guest staying in the Elvis Presley room. “I love this hotel,” he said to me. “I wanted to know ‘What would Elvis Presley eat for breakfast?’ and now I know”. That guest eats pancakes and strawberry ice cream every morning, just as Elvis liked to do. On the next table, the Einstein room's guest is eating cabbage soup!
The company plans to open another Fame Hotel in New York next year and there are plans to expand into Europe too. I look forward to staying in the Winston Churchill suite (套房) In London!

Ⅱ.阅读理解
When you move, gestures say as much about you as what comes out of your mouth.
Jenny Smith, 34, an assistant vice-president at a bank in New York, was interviewing candidates (申请人) for a position which required a person with good communication skills.
One candidate in particular stood out, but not in a good way. While she could have been very intelligent, her body language sent out very different messages. Her handshake was more of a finger shake, and her eye contact was weak.
To Jenny, what the candidate said didn't matter because her body language said everything: she wasn't suitable for the position. The candidate may have been quite appropriate (合适的), but she didn't manage to get that across. So our body language may not do us justice. But there are some signals which are very common and are worth a thousand words.
For example, a handshake can say much more than “hello, nice to meet you”. The most important part of a handshake is palm-to-palm contact. It's even more important than how strong your handshake is. The palm-to-palm contact makes people seem honest: it seems to say “I am sincere (真诚的)”. A weak handshake — when the palms don't touch — makes you seem unfriendly and insincere.
But people sometimes use body language to give each other the wrong impression. Somebody who has a firm handshake may pretend to be sincere, and somebody with a weak handshake may just be a bit shy and nothing more.
Body language can also be overdone. While eye contact gives an impression of friendliness, too much eye contact or eye contact which is too intense (十分强烈的) can make people feel uncomfortable.
