The US government has recently helped people learn more about the dangers of earthquakes by publishing a map. This map shows the chances of an earthquake in each part of the country. The areas of the map where earthquakes are most likely to occur are called earthquake belts. The government is spending a great deal of money and is working hard to help to discover the answers to these two questions:
Can we predict earthquakes?
Can we control earthquakes?
To answer the first question, scientists are looking very closely at the most active fault (断层) systems in the country, such as the San Andreas fault in California. A fault is a break between two sections of the earth's surface. These breaks between sections are the places where earthquakes occur. Scientists look at the faults for changes which might show that an earthquake was about to occur. But it will probably be many years before we can predict earthquakes correctly. And the control of earthquakes is even farther away.
However, there have been some interesting developments in the field of controlling earthquakes. The most interesting development concerns the Rocky Mountain Arsenal earthquakes. Here water was put into a layer of rocks 4,000 metres below the surface of the ground. Shortly after this injection (注射) of water, there was a small number of earthquakes. Scientists have decided that the water which was injected into the rocks worked like oil on each other.
When the water “oiled” the fault, the fault became slippery and the energy of an earthquake was given out. Scientists are still experimenting at the site of these earthquakes. They have realized that there is a connection between the injection of the water and the earthquake activity. They have suggested that it might be possible to use this knowledge to prevent very big, dangerous earthquakes, that is, scientists could inject some kind of fluid like water into faults and change one big earthquake into a number of small, harmless earthquakes.

One thing that seems to hold a lot of people back from setting and achieving big goals is the need for security (安全). Security is a feeling of certainty that everything is OK and that all your basic needs will be provided for. On the surface there's nothing wrong with that. It's great to feel secure. Abraham Maslow lists it as one of the basic human needs. If we don't feel secure, we can't move onto higher levels like love and achievement. If we have doubts about paying the rent at the end of the month, how can we possibly go after our really big dreams?
So how is it that some people are able to start a new business while completely broke? Do business risk takers simply have a lower need for security?
If you read the stories of very successful people, you see a common pattern (模式) again and again — from an external (外部的) point of view, most of these people were not in a secure situation when they started going after their dreams. Sylvester Stallone was so broke that he had to sell his dog. Tony Robbins did his dishes in his bathroom because his small apartment had no kitchen. Brian Tracy was a day laborer. Og Mandino was a homeless drunk who went into libraries to stay warm. While some successful people start out with a lot of advantages, most don't.
Meanwhile, how is it that others who seem to be in a far more secure situation are paralyzed from taking action? People who have some money in the bank, a nice home, and a highly-paid job still don't feel secure. Meanwhile, others with far worse starting positions pass them by. Why?
The reason isn't that some people need security more than others. I think everyone needs to feel secure. The difference, however, is that the successful risk takers define security internally (内部地) while others define security externally.

About eight years ago, Mary Grace Henry of Harrison, New York, asked for a sewing machine (缝纫机) for her birthday. She wanted to design and sell headbands (头巾) to pay for just one African girl's schooling.
Now, 11,000 headbands later, Mary Grace has sold enough to give 45 girls living in poverty (贫穷) the gift of an education.
Henry is the founder of Reverse The Course — a headband-making business that gives 100 percent of the money it makes toward educational chances for girls, primarily in Uganda and Kenya. Henry had the idea to start her business after learning about early marriage in some developing countries — a practice that greatly reduces the likelihood of a girl receiving education.
There are about 67 million child brides (新娘) worldwide, according to the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW). Girls in poor communities in the developing world are greatly affected by the practice, which “repeats the cycle of poverty,” according to the organization.
On November 6, Henry won a World of Children Award for her work to fight against the practice through educational chances. According to the organization, $35,000 will be given to support Reverse The Course's work by providing money for student workshops and programs for girls in poor Africa.
“The greatest difficulty of education faced by both girls and boys is poverty,” Henry told the awards organization. “Girls, though, face a second hurdle that is far more difficult to address: their culture. In many countries throughout the world, girls are viewed as having not just less value than boys, but often little or no value.”
“When you see a need, act,” Henry said of the advice she'd give to others who want to make change. “Dream big, but start small, taking little steps. Set a goal (目标) and don't frighten yourself by thinking about the ‘what-ifs.' Each step taken will present both new chances and new difficulties. Face each one as it comes and then keep going. All those little steps, done with love, will lead you to places impossible to imagine.”

At the age of ten, my parents thought that I should learn to play an instrument. They chose guitar lessons for me. I had no interest in playing it. All that I wanted to do was to improve my soccer skills. However, my parents believed that playing soccer was a waste of my valuable time. They thought I should use the time to focus on school and develop my brain by taking on a difficult task, such as learning to play music.
However, since the first day of the lessons, I disliked the guitar. While learning to play the guitar, I just wanted to play soccer as much as I could. But what could a ten-year-old do when his parents said they would punish him if he didn't do what they told him to do? Even though I loathed the guitar lessons with all my heart, I went to the instructor week after week. And week after week, I would come back and be tired of the lessons and of the amount of practice required.
After wasting a year of my life learning how to play the guitar, I still had not made much progress. My parents began to realize that I was not born to play the guitar and that I was not having fun trying to learn, either. They finally understood how much I wanted to play soccer. So after one bad year, my parents called the music instructor and told him I would no longer take guitar lessons.
I was very happy. Now I play soccer every day and I play it very well. I do think parents should let their children do what they're good at and what they truly love.

In Singapore, most of us love window-shopping while some others enjoy having a picnic at East Coast Park or Changi Beach on sunny days. Singaporeans are never bothered by the occasional (偶尔的) thunderstorms. However, we know that if it rains for long continuous periods, there will be more serious effects. Just recently the main shopping street of Orchard Road was flooded and some parts of Bukit Timah was impossible to traffic. People reacted by writing in to the newspaper to complain about this! We forget that other countries suffer much worse effects. Elsewhere, heavy tropical (热带的) storms often result in floods that ruin crops especially in Thailand and Malaysia. This in turn usually means that the price of rice and vegetables here in Singapore will rise because we import these products from them. If there is a typhoon or tsunami, thousands of lives are lost too. This happened in Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand in 2004 and it serves to remind us of how Mother Nature can cause great damage.
Weather patterns in general have changed dramatically in recent years. Scientists believe that global warming and the resulting melting of the polar ice-cap has caused the level of the ocean to rise. This in turn causes flooding of low-lying areas in countries where the land is rather flat and some parts of which is below sea level. It is believed that human activities have caused Mother Nature to show her extreme anger, so it is now important that we really work together to cut down on harmful activities, for example, illegal logging (伐木) or irresponsible forest-burning to clear land for farming.

I just come back from Britain last week. I was luckily enough to be one of the student from different countries to visit the UK from Feb. 16 to 28.
