A school master of Thurso in Caithness, William Munro, wrote in a report in THE TIMES on September 8, 1809 that twelve years earlier he had been walking along Sandside Bay shore when he saw what he first thought was a naked woman, sitting on a rock and combing her light brown hair. The face was fatty round, with reddish cheeks and blue eyes. If the rock where the woman sat had not been so dangerous for swimmers, Munro would have thought it was human. After a few minutes it dropped into the sea and swam away. Others had seen it too.
The island of Benbecula in the outer Hebrides, about 1830, women cutting seaweed reported they had met a creature of female form playing happily off the shore. A few days later her dead body was found two miles from where she had first been seen. The description of the creature was recorded thus, “the upper part of the creature was about the size of a well-fed child of three or four years of age, with an extraordinarily developed breast. The hair was long, dark and glossy(有光泽), while the skin was white, soft and tender. The lower part of the body was like a salmon(鲑鱼).”

Dougan's mum, Patricia, has lived at Dundonald House for two years and has had dementia (痴呆) for nine years. She has lost most of her speech. But the French course was something she and her husband could do together and the whole family has noticed a change in her.
“I think Dad decided he'd take Mum just for her benefit (好处),” says Mari Dougan. “But he loved it just as much as she did. After they did the French course, they did Italian. Mum knows she's there and she sometimes answers with a word or two - that's amazing. She has been much more active since she started the classes.”
Courses in French, Italian, German and Spanish last for ten weeks for an hour a week. The classes are the idea of Robbie Norval, who started Lingo Flamingo in 2015 to give lessons to older adults. Lingo Flamingo has 35 teachers who work in care homes and community centres in Scotland. So far, it has worked with more than 800 people.
Thomas Bak is a psychologist from the University of Edinburgh. His research into dementia over 20 years has found that people who are bilingual (双语的) get dementia up to four years later than those who are monolingual (只说一种语言的).
Even for people who aren't bilingual, learning a language in later life has benefits, Bak says. He has found improvements (改善) in attention and memory among older adults. He believes it is never too late to learn a language. “In fact, it becomes more important with age,” he says. He adds that what is really good about language learning is the variety of tasks you have to do. “You have to learn to tell the difference between different sounds. You have to learn new ideas that might be very different from your mother tongue. You have to learn grammar and how to use words in a conversation,” he says. Bak says doing a sudoku puzzle is not as useful - it is like going to the gym and spending all your time on a single machine.
“We've also found learning a language really increases well-being and self-confidence,” Norval says: “If an adult with dementia can learn a couple of words, they think to themselves, ‘I can learn new things.’ They don't fear dementia as much. They realise they're not forgetting everything, which is a really important message.”

7.What can we learn about Lingo Flamingo's lessons?

At the East Los Angeles Library, even the youngest readers have to pay their fines (罚款) - but not the way you think. Card holders 21 and under can read away their late fees (费用) at a rate of $5 per hour, according to CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System) reporter Jamie Yuccas. It's a new period of time for Los Angeles County, a program called “The Great Read Away.”
“We're not really focusing (集中) on what they're reading so long as they're reading here,” LA County Library Director Skye Patrick said. He said the idea came about after the library noticed a disconcerting fact: Many kids who had debts on overdue (逾期的) books or movies would stop coming to the library altogether.
“Ten dollars, for some people is a huge amount,” Patrick said.
“And those are the kids that you want in the library?” Yuccas asked.
“That's exactly right, so the purpose of this program is really to invite them back into the library, to make libraries open to them and their families,” Patrick said.
In a reading room, Yuccas found 8-year-old Jaylene Robles working off her late fee while also catching up on the popular “Judy Moody” series.
“When you didn't have to pay money for your fines, and you could read away your fines, what did you think?” he asked her.
“I was surprised... I thought everyone in the library or someone that has a fine, would have to pay,” Robles said.
Children's librarian Xuemin Zhong said she sees kids reading away fees daily.
“I've seen as low as a couple of cents to as high as a couple hundred dollars,” Zhong said. “And I've seen kids read that away because they have a duty to do so.”
Since the program started last year, LA County said its more than 80 libraries have recorded more than 50,000 reading periods and opened more than 13,000 blocked accounts (被封账号).

Ⅲ.阅读理解
Can you believe everything that you read? It seems as if every day, some new articles come out about a new discovery about this or that. For example, water is bad for you, or good for you. The answer depends on which scientific study has just come out. People cannot decide which food items are healthy, how pyramids were constructed, and why dinosaurs disappeared. When we look for answers we sometimes can believe persuasive researches and scientists. But how trustworthy are they really? Here are two examples of scientific hoaxes (骗局).
As far back as 1726, Johann Beringer was fooled by his fellow scientists into thinking he had made an amazing discovery. The fossils of spiders, lizards, and even birds with a name written on them in Hebrew were unlike anything that had been found before. He wrote several papers on them and was famous for these fossils which later proved to be created by jealous colleagues to ruin his reputation.
When an early human being was discovered in 1912, scientists at that time were wild with excitement at the meaning it had for the theory of evolution. There were hundreds of papers about this Piltdown man over the next fifty years until it was finally discovered to be a complex hoax. The skull of a man had been mixed with the jawbone of an orangutan (猩猩) to make the ape man.
The next time you read the exciting new findings of a study of the best scientist, do not automatically assume that it is true. Even qualified people can get it wrong. Though we certainly should not ignore scientific research, we do need to take it with_a_grain_of_salt. Just because it is accepted as the truth today does not mean it will still be trustworthy tomorrow.

3.What does the underlined phrase “with a grain of salt” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Happily. B.Generally.
C.Doubtfully. D.Completely.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
