How did come about?
the snow catastrophe
Global warming was one of the important reasons why such extreme climate like severe storms and heavy snow frequently came about.

造成极端天气频繁的一个重要原因就是全球变暖。
Unit4 Global Warming

Reading

The Earth Is Becoming Warmer – But Does It Matter?
Pre-reading
What is it in the picture?
It’s a greenhouse made of glass.
What is it used for?
It’s used for growing plants, especially during cold weather.
How does it work?
The air inside is warm because the glass traps the heat from the sun and keeps it from escaping. This makes the greenhouse heat up and so the plants can grow throughout the cold period.

What is greenhouse gases?
The gases surrounding the earth,
including carbon dioxide, methane
and water vapor.
What do you think greenhouse gases do?
They trap heat from the sun
and therefore warm the earth.

Fast Reading
Glance quickly at the magazine article and answer the questions.
Sophie Armstrong wrote the magazine article. The name of the magazine is “Earth care”.
2.What are the names of the three scientists mentioned in the article?
They are Dr.Janice Foster,Charles Keeling and George Hambley.
1.Who wrote the magazine article? What is the name of the magazine?
3.What do they think about global warming? Do they agree with one another?

They don’t agree with each other.
Some think the effects will be terrible, while some others believe that we should not worry about it.
Dr. Janice Foster thinks the effects of global warming could be very serious.

George Hambley thinks global warming will be mild with few bad environmental consequences.

True or false
Read the article carefully and finish Part 2 on Page 27
1.The temperature last century didn’t seem to increase much. ( )
2.Everyone believes that global warming is caused by the activities of humans. ( )
3.Janice Foster believes that global warming is caused by burning fossil fuels. ( )
4.Natural gas is a greenhouse gas. ( )

4.What are the two graphs about?
Graph 1 shows the temperature increase of one degree Fahrenheit from 1860 to 2000.
5.What is the main topic of the article?
Global warming / The warming of the earth.
Graph 2 is about the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1997.

The two different viewpoints towards the effects of global warming between Dr. Janice Foster and George Hambley

Dr. Janice Foster George Hambley
Carbon dioxide has caused the global temperature to __________. An increase of five degrees would be a ____________ and could be ______________. More carbon dioxide is a __________ thing,
which makes crops __________ and will encourage ____________________.

positive

a greater range of animals
Of the two ideas, which are you in favor of ?
The Dr Janice Foster’s.

Why ?
Because we have witnessed a large number of disasters predicted by some people.

Questions
How has the global warming come about?

①Human activity--- burning of fossil fuels.

② Greenhouse effect--- greenhouse gases--- we need those gases.

③ We add huge quantities of extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by burning Fossil fuels.
The carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere went up from around 315 parts per million to around 370 parts per million from 1957 to 1997 (See Graph 2 on Page 26 )

What are the effects and disasters of global warming?

What’s worse ,the glaciers(冰川) of the South Pole are beginning to crack(破裂)
The glaciers of the Poles are starting to melt due to the increasing temperatures caused by global warming.

tsunami
The sea level to rise.
tornados

Severe storms
droughts
famines
the spread of diseases
destruction of species

Dicussion
What should we do about the terrible effects above?
What can we do about global warming?
Summary
We should do something about global warming. Because it could have many negative effects on the earth. With the temperature increasing, the polar ice caps eventually would melt, causing sea levels to rise by several meters. Coastal and low-lying cities would be submerged. Some scientists predict severe storms, droughts, famines, the spread of diseases and the destructions of species.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING?
What shall we do in our daily life?

Return the green world to us

When we talk about the greenhouse effect, we’ re talking about the world of tomorrow. We need to work together for a greener future; we have to carry the rainbow together. In a world of change, we need to be changers. And remember, we didn’t inherit this planet from our parents, we borrow it from our children and
our children’s children.
Start from every little bit to fight global warming.
Should we do nothing
about global warming?
