Ⅱ.[2019·海淀一模] 阅读理解
My name is Jackson. I’m a great reader with good memory. I remember almost everything I read. But I don’t like to speak in class. When Mr. Knoll announced an oral book report, the idea of going up and having my classmates staring at me while I talked filled me with anxiety.
As for the date, if the book report was due in two weeks, I would do it right then. Mr. Knoll, though, gave us a month to get the report ready, so I thought I had plenty of time.
Finally, I chose Fire-Hunter by Jim Kjelgaard. It looked really interesting. I read the first few pages and then I set it aside. I wasn’t worried. I had plenty of time. Then the book got buried in the clutter(杂物) in my room.
Before I knew it, the date of the book report was a week away. Some kids had already finished. I was in a panic. I raced home and found the book. Trembling(颤抖), I turned to the back and discovered there were 218 pages! I read like crazy.
The last day came. When Mr. Knoll called on me to give my report, I still had eighty pages to go.
The class looked sorry for me when I pulled myself forward. They could see my fear.
“My book is Fire-Hunter, by Jim Kjelgaard,” I began slowly. Then I started to tell the story and the class seemed interested. To my surprise, I discovered I was enjoying myself. However, I had no idea how the book ended. I really didn’t know what came over me. I made up the rest of the story on the spot. The class loved it, and applauded as I finished.
At break time, Mr. Knoll called me over. “You know, Jackson, I don’t really remember the book ending that way.”
I gulped (倒吸气).
“You told a pretty good story,” he continued. “The assignment was an oral book report. You did a great job on the oral part.”
“Uh, thanks,” I said.
“When you actually finish Fire-Hunter, please come to me and give me the book report.”
“Yes, I definitely will,” I said. I knew I would never make that mistake again.
9.How long did Mr. Knoll give students to prepare the book report? ( )

10.We know from the passage that . ( )?

Cartoonist: Charles Schulz
Charles Schulz is a true hero. For nearly 50 years, Schulz’s comic strip, the Peanuts collection, has been the most well-known cartoon in the world. It has 355 million daily readers in 75 countries. On February 13th, 2000, Schulz died of cancer. But he will always be remembered by people old and young worldwide.
In Schulz’s works, he always stayed positive. He tried to give readers a happy feeling.Kids like Peanuts because the characters live a simple life and go through the same troubles as they do.He did not pick out stressful topics of the day.Instead, he always brought readers into a joyful world by writing about a happy place with simple worries.
Schulz was also a good father of four children. It’s said that he never failed to stop his work to play a pick-up baseball game or have lunch with his family. He was always very involved in his children’s lives and supported their decisions. He taught them the importance of a person’s inner worth. His family describes Schulz as a man with the fewest needs.
His youngest daughter, Jill, said,“He’s a fighter, but he always has bad luck.” When Schulz learned his cancer was serious, he was forced to give up the job he loved—writing the Peanuts cartoons.Unluckily, Schulz died the night before the last strip of his comics came out in the Sunday papers. Some might say this was unlucky, but Jill said her father enjoyed spending his whole life writing to make people happy.

Rubik’s Cube
Do you have any interests in your childhood? In my seventh grade, I developed an interest in solving a Rubik’s Cube.I started by asking my brother to teach me and he asked me to solve a blue cross on a cube by myself.
I spent around 20 minutes mixing the cube and finally got that little blue cross on the top.Excitedly, I jumped up from the chair and raced into my brother’s bedroom. After handing the cube to him, to my surprise, he mixed the perfect blue cross up, making my work completely disappear.
“Do it again,” he handed it back to me.
“No, I won’t.” I was angry stepping out of his room.
A few weeks later, my brother wasn’t at home.“I’m going to learn how to do this without him!” I promised myself.I spent the rest of my night watching a guy on YouTube teach me to solve the first few steps.I mastered those steps.
The next day, I spent the whole school day secretly practicing what I had learned the night before. When I made my way to my music class, I tried to find some spare time taking out the cube again and solving what I knew.Noah, my classmate, and also one of my best friends later, laughed at me.
“Do you know how?” I sneered(嘲笑).
“Actually yeah, let me see it.My fastest solving time is 15 seconds,” he noted as he began solving the cube.It took him about 25 seconds to finish it.
“Okay, that was cool.” I started solving the cube again.I didn’t know at that time this boy would be my inspiration for cube solving. He taught me each step, each day, and when I forgot, he’d remind me how to do it.He was the best friend I’d ever had.
Sadly he’s no longer with us now, but the memories of solving cubes together will be there forever. It was this boy who helped me with cube solving. It takes me around a minute to solve a Rubik’s Cube.I am proud that I can do something not many people can.Thank you, Noah.

P.I.C.K.the Right Books for You
The secret to learn how to choose the right book is simple. It’s one word you can depend on when you’re in a library or a bookstore. All you need to remember is “P.I.C.K.”.“P.I.C.K.” stands for Purpose, Interest, Comprehend, and Know the Words.
P=Purpose. Why are you looking for a book—reading for pleasure or trying to learn something? Reading silently for yourself or reading out loud for someone else? Most often, your purpose for reading can be found with a quick answer.
I=Interest. With the many millions of books on shelves today, there must be something out there for everyone. If you are interested in cars, consider books about history of racing, race car drivers, or car design.Even if you have a short amount of time to choose books, you can determine interest by looking at the front cover, flipping through(快速翻阅) the pages to have a quick look at photos or illustrations, or reading the back cover or the chapter titles.
C=Comprehend. It’s important to choose a book right for your level or ability. How to choose such a book? If you read books at Level A, for example, you’d better not choose a book at Level D.If the book isn’t labeled(贴标签) with a level, you can open the book and choose a page—then you can decide whether the book is at a right level for you by asking yourself:
·Did I understand what I just read?
·Do I remember what I read?
·Was I able to read most of the words?
This brings us to our final letter: K.
K=Know the Words. Readers should be able to understand most of the words on the page. The key is the“Five Finger Rule”: Choose a book you would like to read, look at a page in the middle and put one finger down for every word you don’t understand. The“Five Finger Rule” shows a general idea of the relationship between the number of unknown words and the difficulty level of a book:
·0—1 unknown word=too easy
·2—3 unknown words=just right
·4—5 unknown words=too difficult
You want to know how to choose books right for you—books that are enjoyable, fun, and exciting. P.I.
C.K.is all about giving you the tools to be a strong and confident reader.

Students in our school have one thing in common—an interest in sports. Different students have different ways to relax. Sports can help them relax after a period of exhausting work. They take the sport that they like best. Most of the boys take part in all kinds of sports, because they think it can make them stronger. As for girls, they want to lose weight. They want to keep slim, so they also like taking exercise.
I like sports not only because they can help me to keep healthy, but also because they make me relaxed. Studying all day long makes me tired so that I often do sports with my classmates after class. Now I feel much better than before. So let’s take exercise as much as possible.

A Powerful Team
This is a story of two friends—one is blind; the other has no arms. Although the two are “disabled”, they are a powerful team together. They have changed part of their village in North China’s Hebei Province into a rich, green forest.
Their story began in 2000. Haixia was blind in his right eye. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident. Neither could find a job, so they decided to team up. They rented(租) some poor land and began to plant trees.
Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would create an environmental paradise(天堂). Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. It also saves the village from river flooding(洪水泛滥) during the rainy season.
When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a.m. Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their workplace. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches(树枝) from trees. Haixia climbs to the tree-top and picks up the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and plants it carefully. Finally Wenqi waters the tree.
The two men don’t make much money but they are proud of themselves and they still work hard. As Wenqi says, “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter.”
Neither Haixia nor Wenqi cares about money. As a team, they already have everything they need—a perfect pair of eyes, two strong hands, and the best friendship in the world!

Albino Power
I was born an albino(白化病患者) in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1945.No one in my family had ever known what an albino was, what it meant to be an albino, what had to be done differently because I was an albino.
My parents and friends treated me just like they treated everybody else. That was just about the best thing they could have done.It gave me a leg up on trusting myself, so when troubles came along, I could deal with them.
True, my schoolbook photo always looked like a snowball with two pieces of coal for eyes.Like most albinos, I had terrible eyesight, but the fact that I could hardly see didn’t worry me all that much.
Kids laughed at me, calling me“Whitey”.People stared at me when I held reading material right at the tip of my nose so I could see it well enough to read.Even when I was eight or nine, movie-theater workers started asking me to pay adult prices because I “looked older”.
The worst part for me was that because my eyesight was so bad, I couldn’t play sports very well.I didn’t give up trying, though.I practiced playing basketball every day.And I studied harder.
Finally, I got better at school and loved it.By the time I got to college, I was double majoring(专业), going to summer school and taking part in every kind of after-class activity I could find.I had learned to be proud of being an albino.I did my best to make“albino” a positive word. And I decided to make my living with my eyes—and in sports.
I couldn’t see well enough to play sports, but with a good and long-lasting education and the drive to do it, I could make a living involved in the area I loved.I’ve done it now for more than thirty years in print and in video, and now in cyberspace.People make jokes about how I’m the only “blind editor(编辑)” they know, but the jokes are friendly smiles now, and some of them are signs of respect. And I make jokes about being an albino.I have even developed an all-white routine, if you could call it that.
I was just a proud albino kid from the coal country of Pennsylvania.I now realize that being born an albino helped me to get over difficulties, become confident, and be proud of my personal achievement.

Dear Mr. Smith,
It’s my pleasure to introduce myself to you. My friends say I’m an outgoing and helpful girl, and it’s easy for me to get on well with others.
As for my hobbies, reading is what I like best. In my spare time I spend much time reading books, especially on medicine. My parents are both doctors. They influence me a lot, so to be a good doctor is my dream. I have been studying hard to enter a good medical university. Besides, I’m going to take more volunteer work to help sick people. Those experiences may help me become an excellent doctor.
I do hope to join in the activity and look forward to your reply.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
