Many older people fear that a hospital stay could leave them even more disabled than they were before. Unfortunately, there’s new reason to believe this fear is reasonable. Elderly patients who are hospitalized are at much higher risk of cognitive problems afterward, according to a study published on Wednesday in the journal Neurology.
The cause is unclear. Both the illness that brought the patient to the hospital and the treatments received there may contribute. But the risk appeared to last for years, said Robert Wilson, lead author of the report and a professor at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr. Wilson and his colleagues examined data on 1,335 people aged 65 and older. All of the patients were hospitalized at some point between January 1993 and December 2011. They were interviewed every three years and given tests of mental status. At least one interview occurred before a hospitalization and two interviews after, allowing changes in mental status to be tracked over time.
The researchers found that the rate of cognitive decline in older patients more than doubled after a hospital stay, generally affecting thinking and memory. Before these older people were admitted, mental test scores declined 0.031 units per year on average;after a hospitalization, the decline was 0.075 units annually on average.
“Essentially, it’s as if people became 10 years older, from a cognitive standpoint, than they actually were before a hospitalization,” Dr. Wilson said.
Especially vulnerable to this effect were patients with more serious illnesses who stayed in the hospital for longer periods of time, and patients who started experiencing worsening memory and thinking problems before they were admitted.
“We think that a hospital stay call help unmask and accelerate previously unidentified cognitive problems,” Dr. Wilson said.
Not every older patient who goes to the hospital will experience these kinds of issues, Dr. Wilson added;many return home after an acute-care stay without any kind of impairment.
1. In the research, how many interviews did one patient receive at least?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
2. From the research. it can be concluded that ________.
A. a hospital stay speeds up the decline of older patients’ cognitive ability
B. most older patients’ cognitive ability begins to decline after they get out of hospital
C. the treatments most older patients receive in hospital are not worthwhile
D. the older patients’ cognitive ability is easy to recover after a hospital stay
3. What might cause the cognitive problems for the older patients?
A. The illness that they got during a hospital stay.
B. The treatments they received in hospital.
C. The illness that they got after getting out of hospital.
D. The treatments they received out of hospital
4. What should be done for the older patients to avoid the problems mentioned in the text?
A. Try not to make them stay in hospital for treatments.
B. Give them a special care during a hospital stay.
C. Persuade them to stay in hospital as long as possible.
D. Give them more opportunities for thinking and memory.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. D。Good idea

选项A和C人称用错;选项B语气不委婉;I’m being served.
如在party上:—Enjoy yourself!—You too.碰到熟人:—Have a nice day.—You too.过年过节:—Have a happy new year!—You too.

We had some American exchange students in our school last week. As a host brother, I’d like to share some happy experiences with you.
Upon their arrival, we gave the American students a warm welcome, among whom a boy named Tim was to stay with my family for the weekend. While they were introducing themselves, I already recognized him by comparing him with the photo he had sent to me. When school was over, we took the subway home, where my parents had already prepared a rich family dinner for Tim. We enjoyed ourselves a lot, eating and chatting about whatever subjects that interested US. The next day, I acted as a guide, showing Tim around the most famous scenic spots in Beijing, such as the Great Wall and the Bird’s Nest. Wherever he went, he had some photos taken to help him memorize this unforgettable trip to China. When finally the time came for US to say good-bye, I gave Tim a kite as a souvenir.
I think this activity has benefited me a lot. It was a perfect chance for me both to practice my oral English and to learn more about America.
