I was very happy with the school hours in Britain. On the first day, all students went to attend an assembly. During the assembly, the headmaster told us that the best way to earn respect from the school was to work hard and achieve high grades. In our class there were 28 students. This is about the average size for British schools. I found the homework was not heavy, but it was a bit challenging for me at first because all the homework was in English.
My English improved a lot as I used English every day and I also had an extra French class on Tuesday evenings. British food is very different. They eat lots of dessert after their main meal. I was very lucky to experience this different way of life.

我的英语水平提高了很多,因为我每天都在使用英语,而且在星期二晚上我也有一节额外的法语课。英国的食物是非常不同的,主餐后他们吃很多的甜点。我很幸运能体验到这种不同的生活方式。

Queen Victoria was monarch(统治者)of Great Britain from 1837 until her death in 1901. This period is often called the Victorian Age.
Queen Victoria was a stern and serious woman. One reason she was so serious was that she had suffered a great loss. When she was twenty years old, she married a German prince named Albert. Victoria and Albert were deeply in love, and their marriage was extremely happy. In 1861, after they had been married for twenty-one years, Albert died, leaving Queen Victoria heartbroken. For the rest of her life, the lonely Victoria mourned his loss. It was customary in those days for a widow to dress in black for a short time after the death of her husband. But Queen Victoria dressed in black for forty years. And for forty years, as another sign of her grief, she wrote her letters on white paper edged in black.
Even before Prince Albert died, Queen Victoria was known as a very serious woman. She had a strong sense of duty and worked very hard at all her tasks. In her diary she wrote, “I love to be employed; I hate to be idle.” She never forgot that she was Britain’s queen and always acted with great dignity. Victoria had high ideals and moral standards that sometimes made her seem stuffy(保守的). She was also very sure of herself. 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
Cob is a six-year-old boy. An aid organization brought him to the farm run by Joy from another province. Both Cob’s parents died of serious disease when he was a two-month-old baby. His eighty-year-old grandmother treated him badly. He developed a disease over time, which led to him being unable to keep things in mind well; on the other hand, there was nothing good for him to bear in mind as well.
When he first arrived at the farm, it appeared to him like a huge playground. Cob played around, hid behind trees and bushes, and enjoyed this new area.
Over time, he gained confidence, chose Joy as his new mother, and let her carry him around. Amy, Joy’s real daughter, the same age as Cob, had to learn to share her mother with the other child. She also needed to see the other children as her brothers or sisters and accept them although she may be unwilling to do so.
In the beginning, Cob did not use the facilities (设施) on the farm. Slowly Joy tried to help him use them and during the day, he kept on with them but not at night. All attempts (尝试) to send him to school failed. As soon as he arrived there, he ran off into the wide world like a free rabbit. He enjoyed running around in school rather than doing what teachers told him to do. Finally, the head teacher announced that the school was not suitable for Cob.
Cob had to go back to the farm. At daytime, he watched adults and elder children bicycle and if there was any chance, he took a bicycle, then pushed and pulled it up and down the hill. One day Cob found there was a small bicycle standing next to the big ones. It was a gift for him! It was new with wheels on each side of the back wheel, which was just right for a little child without any experience in riding a bicycle. Cob pushed it up the hill, got on it and off from time to time.
From then on Cob began riding his bicycle every day. Although he often fell and got hurt, he went on. During rainy days, he stored the bicycle in his room and slept close to it at night. Maybe even in his dreams he was happy ― he had found the entrance to a happy and satisfying life.
1. What can we learn about Cob from Paragraph 1?
A. His parents left him when he was born.
B. His grandma was too old to know him.
C. He was sent to hospital many times.
D. He suffered from a poor memory.
2. Upon being taken to the farm, Cob felt _____.
A. confused B. frightened C. annoyed D. excited
3. What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 & 4?
A. Cob turned out to be Joy’s real son. B. Amy had a similar experience as Cob.
C. Joy has helped many children like Cob.
D. Joy seldom thought of sending Cob to school.
4. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Riding bicycle is Cob’s favourite.
B. Cob has a mixture of good and bad luck.
C. How to live a happy and satisfying life.
D. Cob suffered much physically in his family.

Picky eaters may have good reasons for their behaviour. No matter why your child has become picky, how you handle the situation can affect his or her future. Therefore, you should know the following reasons for picky children first of all.
Neophobia is common in children; it often happens at the dinner table. Some children just refuse to try new food because they don’t know what it will taste like, while others dislike new food before even smelling it. Some children take it to the extreme (极端) and will only eat a few foods that they like. Psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Capaldi says that, by the time children reach the age of two, they have formed their own eating habits that they don’t want to be disturbed by new offerings at the table.
A newly published study led by Dr. Lucy Cooke of University College London showed that picky eating in children results from genetic (遗传的) and environmental causes. The research, which followed the eating habits of 5,390 pairs of twins between the ages of 8 and 11, found that about 75% of the neophobia in the children was from their parents, while 25% was due to the influence of environment.
Children grow at a high speed during their first year, but that fast-paced growth tends to slow down by their second year. When children are not experiencing one of those fast growth periods, their body needs less energy; and that results in a smaller appetite (胃口). When children are not hungry, they tend to enjoy only food they like. They refuse new food and food that is not their favourite. Some children will limit the amount of food to only one kind, like hamburgers or pancakes, leaving all the other foods untouched.
In some cases, many real reasons why a child behaves as a picky eater exist. According to the Macmillan English Dictionary, alien is a word used to refer to a person or creature from a planet other than Earth. Aliens are beings that are believed to exist by many people. Is there evidence that aliens are real? Let us find out.
Aliens have often been in the news. They have always been surrounded (包围) by mystery and interest of people all around the world. Some people have claimed (声称) to have been taken away by aliens. Some have claimed to have actually seen them. But there has been no certain evidence for the idea that aliens exist.
Alien sightings have mostly involved sights of ape-like (类猿的) creatures or humanlike figures seen in the dark. At times, some people have even found blood or hair at the locations where aliens were seen. But it is likely that these sightings are of bears or apes. Possibly, people mistake bears or apes for aliens. Alien sightings could have probably been a result of human imagination followed with fear.
Media (媒体) have always described aliens as having humanlike figures traveling in plate-shaped space vehicles. Aliens have long since appeared in films. The media image of aliens is perhaps deeply rooted in the minds of common people. It makes them believe in the reality of aliens. Aliens described in literature have always influenced young minds. But have media been able to produce any evidence that aliens exist? Probably, not!
Alien sightings have mostly been followed with sightings of light in the night sky. People who claim to have seen aliens said they have witnessed mysterious lights in the sky. Some of them have also believed that the light came from the spaceships used by aliens. Plate-shaped objects traveling across the sky have often been taken as aliens’ space vehicles. People have seen certain mysterious objects floating in the sky and called them aliens. Researchers say that some of these sightings might just be certain astronomical phenomena (天文现象).
Unless aliens come to Earth and come into contact with us, we may not be able to say for sure that aliens are real. Don’t you think so?
1. According to the third paragraph, alien sightings are most likely to be _____.
A. imaginary B. similar C. serious D. scientific
2. Why do many people believe in the reality of aliens?
A. Because humanlike figures have been seen in the dark.
B. Because media have collected first-hand evidence that aliens exist.
C. Because humanlike figures traveling in plate-shaped objects have been found.
D. Because the images of aliens described in films have greatly affected people for ages.
3. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. People all over the world show great interest in aliens.
B. Young people are deeply affected by the books about aliens.
C. It’s said that alien sightings are usually followed with unusual lights.
D. Aliens are harmful to people and animals living on Earth.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Aliens in the minds of common people B. What do people see in alien sightings?
C. Do aliens really exist in our world? D. Alien reports from different people

What teaches you more about China: learning Chinese or making friends with Chinese people? Doing both would be perfect of course and maybe some people would say you cannot separate the two.
As a foreigner, I arrived in China in September 2010 and have been lucky enough to teach English at a small university in a city in Zhejiang Province, about an hour’s drive from Hangzhou. In spite of starting off with the best of intentions (意图) to learn Chinese, in each term something seemed to throw me off track. In the first term, it was a bad cold and judging some public English speaking competitions, and then the death of my father that sent me home for a while.
But if I miss out on Chinese lessons again this year, I’ll meet and make friends with several of the Chinese teachers at the university who also teach English. It’s been a wonderful thing to be welcomed into their lives, to be taken and trusted as a friend. My Chinese friends and I have dinner together every Friday evening, do our grocery shopping together, and hang out for hours in the local Starbucks at the weekend and talk about anything and everything. And we send text messages back and forth rather a lot during each day! Over this year these friendships have removed the difference between being in China and being at “home”. It is often said, of course, that home is where the heart is. And part of my heart is forever with my Chinese friends.
It has reminded me that while language is important to understand local people and cultures, opening your heart and mind is far more important. I’ve concluded that in spite of my lack (缺少) of progress in speaking Chinese, even the best foreign Chinese speaker will never understand anything about China if they can’t open their heart to the people they live and work with. I, of course, have been lucky that my Chinese friends speak close to perfect English.
What has surprised me is that many foreign teachers don’t make the effort to make friends with their Chinese counterparts. What I’ve learned is that my Chinese teacher friends share the same thoughts too. I don’t speak much Chinese but this hasn’t stopped me appreciating (欣赏) the best of China: its people.
5. From Paragraph 2 we can know that the author _____.
A. works in Hangzhou as a college teacher B. failed to achieve his goal as expected
C. finds it hard to learn Chinese D. enjoys competing with others
6. From the third paragraph, we learn that the author _____.
A. likes learning how to cook Chinese food
B. tends to spend hours enjoying coffee alone
C. develops a good relationship with some Chinese
D. tries his best to learn about local people’s lives
7. The underlined word “counterparts” in the last paragraph refers to people who __.
A. like to make friends B. study Chinese in China
C. work as teachers in China D. dislike learning foreign languages
8. Why doesn’t the author think his poor Chinese stop him appreciating the best of China?
A. Because the author often has dinner with his Chinese friends.
B. Because the way of doing things is different in China.
C. Because the author’s friends can speak perfect English.
D. Because the author makes friends with an open heart.

The foggy weather these days has caused widespread concern about air pollution. There are more traffic accidents and more people suffer from breathing problems.
These are some reasons for air pollution in China. First of all, too many cars give off waste gas in the street. Secondly, a lot of fossil fuel like coal, petrol and natural gas is consumed in factories, which produces too much carbon dioxide. Besides, China has many smokers, who are making air pollution even worse.
It is time for us to fight against air pollution. We’d better walk or ride to school to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel. We should plant more trees to absorb poisonous gas in the air and persuade people around us to give up smoking.
Let’s take immediate action to fight against air pollution.

Letter to Editor of TV Weekly
Dear Sir/Madam,
I read Alison Burnham’s review of When we were 12, and I do not agree with her. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling.
The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As a grown-up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’m able to take control of the situation.
I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called “reality programmes”.I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Daniels
1. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter?
A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.
B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.

2. Chris Daniels tells the story about the bus ticket to .
A. describe how painful his early experience was
B. draw a direct response from Alison Burnham
C. show how the programme made him think
D. teach the readers of TV Weekly a lesson
3. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because .
A. he hadn’t got a return ticket B. he had lost his bus ticket
C. he didn’t like big crowds D. he missed the bus home
4. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus?
A. He should have told the conductor then.
B. He should have been well treated.
C. He regrets going to school alone.
D. He wishes it hadn’t happened.
T-shirts out; uniforms in
School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That’s no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes.
Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.
As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.
Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s “creativity.” First, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality (个性). They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.
5. In Paragraph 1, the word “benefits” probably means .
A. tasks B. messages C. differences D. advantages
6. From the passage we learn that uniforms in general .
A. prevent the wearers from being laughed at
B. help the wearers keep their duties in mind
C. are seen as a symbol of power
D. help to create social barriers
7. Some people are against school uniforms because .
A. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms
B. they believe that uniforms will make students less creative
C. they don’t agree that uniforms can remove social barriers
D. they think that school uniforms are too popular
8. The author would probably agree that .
A. it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or not
B. students’ individuality may not come from school education
C. students’ creativity is related to the clothes they choose
D. school uniforms help to create equality among students

Justin Foster, an American high school student, went missing last Friday night. Police are puzzled about it and have stepped up their search for him. People have shown great interest in his disappearance due to sightings of puzzling lights in the sky and reports of alien visits around the time of his disappearance.
Police have found Justin did actually return home that night, because Justin’s two friends and some witnesses have provided some evidence for that. His sister, Kelly, also heard Justin return home at about 11 p.m.. According to Kelly, a bright light then appeared outside her window and a large spaceship was flying outside, with strange looking creatures in it. Just then, she heard Justin shout and the UFO disappeared. She hasn’t seen Justin ever since. She believes the aliens took him, but her parents said she was only dreaming. Some other people, like Mavis Wood, also say they have seen aliens.
Police think there is no hard evidence that Justin was taken by aliens, and they are looking into other possibilities. And they won’t give up until they find out what happened.

For some minutes, all was quiet in the street. Then from across the street someone came walking.
It looked like a man of middle height, dressed in a big raincoat, a soft hat and rubber-soled boots or shoes, and making little sound while walking. No one was in sight. It was a street with two rows of about fifty small houses and there were three lamps on either side. The lamp nearest to the child’s house could be seen clearly, but the others were almost hidden by the smoky air. A car passed the end of the street and its lights showed faintly, but clearly enough to show the smooth skin of a woman’s face. The car disappeared as the woman, wrapped up in her coat, reached the doorway of the child’s house. She put a key in the lock quickly, pushed the door open and stepped inside, then closed the door without looking round. She began to breathe hard.
She leaned against the door for a moment, then straightened up as if with an effort, and walked towards the door of the front room, the passage leading to the kitchen, and the narrow staircase. She hesitated outside the door, then went up the stairs quickly but with hardly a sound. There was enough light from the narrow hall to show the four doors leading off a small landing(楼梯平台). She pushed each door open in turn and shone a torch inside, and the light fell upon beds, walls, furniture, a bathroom hand-basin, a mirror which flashed brightness back; but this was not what the woman was looking for. She turned away and went downstairs, and hesitated again at the foot of the stairs, then turned towards the kitchen. Clearly there was nothing there, or in the small washroom that she wanted. Two rooms remained; the front room and a smaller one next to it. She opened the front room door. After a moment, she saw the child’s bed and the child.
1. The lights of the car passing the end of the street showed that ______.
A. a woman was driving the car B. someone was standing by a street lamp.
C. a man and a woman were walking up the street.
D. a woman was walking by herself up the street.
2. After the woman closed the front door, she ___________.
A. looked round quickly B. started breathing again
C. rested before moving D. walked straight towards the front door
3. When she was upstairs, the woman _______.
A. saw that there was a wash-basin in each room
B. noticed a mirror which she was looking for
C. found a torch in one of the rooms D. opened four different doors
4. Once she was in the house, the woman behaved as if what she was looking for ___
A. might be in the kitchen B. was more likely to be upstairs
C. would be easily seen by the light from the hall
D. would look frightening to a child

I was wiping the door when my parents came back. They were surprised to see what I was doing. I could see tears in my mother’s eyes. At that moment, I knew it was time that I shared my load for the family. Tired though I was, I never realized what use I can be of to my parents until that moment.

Deserts are found where there is little rainfall or where rain for a whole year falls in only a few weeks' time. Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活)if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls, within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.
Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high.
There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand , rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing —very, very slowly —as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock.
Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that :have adapted to life in the desert. During the heat of the day, a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.
