Scientists are hoping to find a good cure for snakebite. Experts on snakebite venom
(毒液) in India, Kenya, Nigeria, the UK and the USA are working together on a possible
cure. They are using the same technology that was used to discover HIV anti-bodies (抗
体) . The scientists are trying to find ways of using human anti-bodies to fight against
snake venom. At the moment, snakebite is treated using anti-venom which adapts (适应) the actual venom from the snake. Professor Robert Harrison, from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, said, "We're studying what we call the ‘next generation’ of snakebite cures, and we hope it will be able to treat bites from any snake in Africa or India."
Snakebites kill up to 140,000 people a year. A further 400, 000 people suffer life-changing injuries after being bitten by a snake. These injuries include amputations (截肢) and psychological trauma (心理创伤). There are about 250 types of snakes around the world that have harmful venom. The venom from these snakes is very different, and this makes finding right anti-venom very difficult for scientists. Former Secretary-General of the UN, Kofi Annan, describes snakebite as, "the biggest public health danger you have likely never heard of". However, people that get the right anti-venom have a very high chance of being saved.
1. What do the scientists want to do to fight against snake venom?
A. Use HIV anti-bodies to fight against snake venom.
B. Use human anti-bodies to fight against snake venom.
C. Use a way of amputations to fight against snake venom.
D. Use more anti-venom to fight against snake venom.
2. Why is it difficult for scientists to find right anti-venom?
A. Because the venom from the snakes is very different.
B. Because the right anti-venom is very little in the world.
C. Because there aren't enough advanced tools finding right anti-venom.
D. Because many people suffer amputations and psychological trauma.
3. What's the best title of the passage?
A. Many People Die of Snakebites B. It's Difficult to Find Cures for Snakebites
C. The "Next Generation" of Snakebite Cures D. Scientists Hope to Find a Cure for Snakebite

There were many plants in a forest. When spring came, a pine tree saw a red rose nearby and said, "What a beautiful flower! I wish I were that lovely. "
The rose proudly said, "It seems that I am the most beautiful flower in this forest." Then the rose looked at a cactus (仙人掌) and said, "Look at that ugly plant full of thorns (刺) ! "
"What a proud flower!" thought the trees.
As the days passed, the red rose often looked at the cactus and said bad words about it, like "This plant is useless. How sorry I am to be his neighbor!"
The cactus never got angry and even tried to advise the rose, saying, "God did not create any form of life without a purpose. "
Spring passed, and the weather became very hot. As there was no rain, the red rose began to wilt (枯萎).
One day the rose saw birds put their beaks (喙) into the cactus and then fly away. The red rose asked the pine tree what the birds were doing. The pine tree explained that the birds were getting water from the cactus.
"The cactus has water?" asked the rose.
"Yes, you can also drink some from it. The birds can bring water to you if you ask the cactus for help. "
The red rose felt too ashamed to ask for water from the cactus. But finally it did ask for help. The cactus kindly agreed.
The rose learned a lesson and never judged (评价) anyone by their appearance again.

A farmer had a friend and his friend was famous for growing apple trees.
One day, the farmer's friend gave him a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it.
The farmer loved the gift. But when he got home, he did not know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the apples; if he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal the apples; if he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the apples. Finally he planted the tree in his wood. Nobody could see it, but there was no sunlight in his wood, so the tree soon died.
Later, the friend asked the farmer why he planted the tree in such a poor place. “What's the difference?" the farmers said angrily. "If I planted the tree near the road, strangers may steal the apples. If I plant the tree in one of my fields, my neighbors may come at night and steal the apples. If I plant the tree near my house, my children may take the apples.”

American and British people both speak English. But sometimes there are some important differences between British English and American English.

Scientists are now trying to make robots look like humans and do the same things as we do. Some robots in Japan can walk and dance. They are fun to watch. However, some scientists believe that although we can make robots move like people, it will be difficult to make them really think like a human. For example, scientist James White thinks that robots will never be able to wake up and know where they are. But many scientists disagree with Mr. White. They think that robots will even be able to talk like humans in 25 to 50 years.
Some scientists believe that there will be more robots in the future. However, they agree it may take hundreds of years. These new robots will have many different shapes. Some will look like humans, and others might look like animals. In India, for example, scientists made robots that look like snakes. If buildings fall down with people inside, these snake robots can help look for people under the buildings. This was not possible 20 years ago, but computers and rockets also seemed impossible 100 years ago. We never know what will happen in the future!

My Life in 20 Years
Life will be much better in 20 years. Now let me tell you something about it.
In 20 years, life will be different. The clothes we wear every day will be more colorful and beautiful. They will be lighter, warmer, and they won't need washing. You needn't cook meals at home. You just need to make an order on the Internet and delicious food and drink will be sent to you before dinner. We will live in big and bright houses and travel around the world. With the help of robots we will be able to travel under the sea. There will be more funny places for people to relax. Students needn't study at school because they will study on computers at home.
How wonderful life will be! Don't you think so?
