I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three?month?old calf struggling in the fast?rising water, and it was a life?and?death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother's body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.
Just at this moment, she went back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot (地点) where she could get to the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next,I heard the sound of a mother's love.Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got to the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring(吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.

A.By putting it on a safe spot.
B.By pressing it against her body.
C.By taking it away with her.
D.By carrying it on her back.
3.What can be the best title for the text?
A.A mother's love B.A brave act
C.A deadly river D.A matter of life and death

Energy goes from one plant or animal to another. A food chain shows how this energy moves. Each time an animal gets eaten, its energy is passed onto the animal that eats it. The food chain is very important because it keeps the balance of nature. If one part of the food chain disappears, it can affect all the other plants and animals. Any threat to the food chain is a threat to the environment's biodiversity(生物多样性). The food chain helps keep animal populations in balance. However, if something happens to damage one of the links in the food chain, that balance is broken. If one animal becomes endangered, it puts all the animals above it at risk.
Some of the threats are natural, such as wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, floods and so on. But the biggest threats to the food chain come from you and me. These threats include overfishing, logging, farming, development, pollution, etc. The food chain is endangered everywhere humans have had an effect on the natural environment.
A recent study shows that the overfishing of large sharks is damaging the food chain along the US Atlantic coast. Canadian and American scientists say sharks are being killed in great numbers for their meat and fins(鳍). Now, not enough sharks are around to eat the cownose ray. The ray's population has increased and they have eaten up the shellfish to the point where it has hurt commercial(商业的) fishing.
Many of us disturb the natural environment in our own backyards. It's up to us to take care of the environment and try not to disrupt the natural food chain. If we don't act responsibly, animals will start disappearing.
4.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.The food chain is not easy to be broken.
B.The energy of an animal usually disappears when it dies.
C.Increasing the links will not break the balance of nature.
D.Breaking the food chain is bad for the biodiversity of the environment.
5.The study mentioned in Paragraph 3 proves that ________.
A.human activities can be a big threat to the food chain
B.we are all responsible for the breaking of the food chain
C.natural disasters are hard to break the food chain
D.hunting large sharks for meat is beneficial
6.We can infer that the writer wrote this passage mainly to ________.
A.explain what the food chain is
B.tell us something interesting about nature
C.suggest that we stop eating meat to save animals
D.suggest that we should not disrupt the natural food chain
C
There are few creatures in the world as elegant as the bald eagle(秃鹰). That's part of the reason why, out of all of the animals in the world, the United States of America chose the bald eagle as the national bird.
Unfortunately, despite being beautiful, brave, and fiercely independent, these eagles haven't always had the easiest time of it.
Like many of the disappearing animals, these creatures have suffered over the last century. The massive, elegant hunters once lived all across North America before their populations started decreasing sharply—largely due to the use of some pesticides (杀虫剂). In fact, researchers estimate that in the 1800s, there were hundreds of thousands of these birds, but by the 1950s there were fewer than 1,000 of these beautiful wild animals left.
But just when things were looking hopeless, this nation banded together, and decided that it was time, once and for all, to do something to save the national bird!
In the 1940s, an act was put into place to protect bald eagles from all forms of trapping and hunting.
By 1967, the populations had made some small strides, though the numbers were still low enough for the bird to be placed on the endangered species list.
Then, in the 1970s, the United States made the biggest step towards protecting the eagle (and countless other species) by banning the pesticide DDT.
In humans, the pesticide DDT is poisonous and linked to cancer. In birds, it causes eggshells to become too thin and the bird eggs will hatch(孵化) too soon, keeping bird populations from growing.
By the 1980s, a group of fewer than 1,000 birds had swelled to 100,000 bald eagles.
In 2007, the bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list, indicating how completely the bird has recovered in the past 50 years. It is a sign that the bald eagle is free in America once more.
7.What's the main reason for the sharp decrease in the bald eagle population?
A.Farmers' hunting. B.Habitat destruction.
C.Pesticides using. D.Global warming.
8.What marks the biggest step to protect the bald eagle?
A.The pesticide DDT being banned.
B.More young bald eagles being hatched.
C.The approval of the act forbidding hunting bald eagles.
D.Bald eagles being placed on the endangered species list.
9.The author develops the passage mainly by ________.
A.presenting cause and effect
B.providing typical examples
C.comparing different opinions
D.following the time order
10.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.How bald eagles died out
B.How America chose the national bird
C.How America discovered a rare kind of birds
D.How America saved a national treasure from extinction

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Many of us invest valuable time, energy and money planning our vacations. We do this because we know for sure that going on vacations must be good for us. Research proves this feeling without a doubt. Vacations help us perform better at work, improve our sleep quality and cushion us against depression.
Yet, despite these benefits, many of us return home with a feeling that our last vacation was OK—but not great. In order to change this, some mistakes should be avoided.
A classic one for vacation planners is attempting to maximize value for money by planning trips that have too many contents. Perhaps you're planning a trip to Europe, seven cities in 10 days, and you realize it will cost only a little more to add two more destinations to the list. Sounds fine in theory, but hopping from one place to the next hardly gives an opportunity to experience what psychologists call mindfulness—time to take in our new surroundings, time to be present and absorb our travel experiences. Another mistake is that we worry too much about strategic issues such as how to find a good flight deal, how to get from A to B,or which destinations to add or subtract from our journey. These issues may seem important, but our psychological state of mind is far more important.
Actually, vacation happiness is based on the following top rules. First, choose your travel companions wisely, because nothing contributes more significantly to a trip than the right companions. Second, don't spend your vacation time in a place where everything is too expensive so as to maintain a positive mood. Third, shop wisely, for meaningful experiences provide more long?term happiness than physical possessions.
