My mom was a single parent, and she joined the US Army when I was very young. I’d been living with my grandparents. I didn’t do well in my studies after I entered high school and I was concerned.
In October of my junior year in high school, my grandpa took me to Cleveland, Ohio, to see the Cleveland Browns play the New York Jets. In the middle of that cold day, we headed to the stadium.
The seating attendant (服务员) looked at our tickets and led us to our seats. We had 2nd-row seats on the 10 yard line. We were so close to the field that we could actually reach out and touch the players.
I felt as if I was living a fantasy. Suddenly, a cheer went up from the crowd as the two teams came rushing across the stadium grounds. The “NEW YORK JETS” in their green and white came out first. There was lots of applauding (鼓掌). Then out came the home team — “CLEVELAND BROWNS” in their orange and brown. There was lots of applauding, too. The Browns started the game with a kick-off to the Jets.
I was amazed at the size of those guys. They looked like “giants” out there. They were so fast on their feet. I sensed a real closeness among the players. I thought to myself, “It is such a different world watching a football game live than watching it on television.”
The Browns held on to get a 20-13 win — their second win of the year. The fans went into the greatest cheer ever. As I stood up and began to move with the crowd, heading out of the stadium, thoughts began rushing through my head, “If I work harder in school and pursue a college educa?tion, I can be successful. It is not too late. I will just have to work hard.”

Airbus says it has turned the comer after a crisis (危机) connected to production problems in the past year. Speaking at the Paris air show held by GIFAS, Louis Gallois, CEO of the European plane maker, said, “Airbus is back.” Airbus an?nounced a list of orders on the first day of the show. It is competing with Boeing, its American rival (对手), for the title of the largest plane maker in the world.
Boeing is expected to disclose the numbers of orders for its 787 Dreamliner soon. Airbus orders unfolded on Monday included Qatar Airways confirming a $16bn order for 80 A350 Airbus planes and ordering three A3 80 planes for about $750m.
In addition to airline companies, Boeing and Airbus are also competing for orders from aircraft renting firms. Orders from these companies — who rank highly among the biggest global buyers of aircraft — are often regarded as a sign of how successful a model will be in the long term. Airbus also secured orders from US Airways that are worth $10bn for 22 of its A350 jets, 60 A320s and ten of its A330-200 wide-body planes.
A few months ago, Airbus uncovered a major cost-cutting programme aiming to reduce the workforce in Europe by 10,000, as well as an?nouncing a group restructuring. “I can tell you with full confidence that Airbus is back and fully back, as you have started noting yesterday as proved by our announcements on the first day,” said Mr Gallois on the second day of the air show.
However, Boeing also announced a deal with General Electric (GE) on the show’s first day. GE placed an order for six 777 Boeing transport airplanes valued at around $1.4bn.
A Wall Street Journal website report, quoting the Delta operating chief, said that Delta Air Lines was on the point of ordering as many as 125 Boeing 787 jetliners (喷气式客机) by the end of this year. However, a spokesman for Delta later said that it had been having conversations with several aircraft makers and no final decision had been made yet.
4. What is the relationship between Airbus and Boeing?
A. Boeing is Airbus’s US branch.
B. Boeing supplies materials to Airbus.
C. They are competitors in aircraft industry.
D. They co-organized the Paris air show many times.
5. According to the text, orders from aircraft renting firms ____________.
A. are necessary to be kept secret
B. can discourage other global buyers of aircraft
C. can suggest the future success of certain aircraft
D. are easier to get than those from airline companies
6. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. Boeing and Airbus are probably competing for orders from Delta.
B. The Delta spokesman was interviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
C. The Delta operating chief signed the agreement with Boeing.
D. Boeing is planning to reduce its workforce in Europe.
C
People who are able to effectively go through the highs and lows of life have what is called resilience (坚韧), or the ability to effectively recover from adversity (逆境).
Whenever you come across a difficult situation, you have two choices: you can either let your emotions get the best of you and be defeated by fear, or you can uplift yourself from the negative and change pain into possibility. I think life is like a roller-coaster (过山车) ride. Even if you consider yourself to be a happy person, it’s un?avoidable that you will run into challenges at some point along your journey.
Sometimes it isn’t until you hit your emotional rock bottom that you are able to develop your resilience. This is how I came to discover my strength. I once survived a deadly car accident that left me with a backbone and brain injury. The doctor told me I may never walk again. At that moment, I just wanted to give up, but I didn’t. Regardless of my doctor’s orders, I continued my master’s degree, while lying in bed for 6 months. I was determined to keep feeding my brain with new knowledge. Falling into discourage?ment wasn’t my choice; instead, I took action to create a new reality for myself and my resilience worked. Now I’ve become a new self, one that is stronger and wiser.
When you unleash your inner power, there is no challenge that you cannot conquer. In a study started by Vodafone, nearly 100 percent of the participants mentioned resilience as a factor in job success. Numbers don’t lie. Resilience is the secret to success. When they get knocked down, they are still able to move forward, meaning that they are able to use life’s greatest adversities as springboards for success.
The next time life throws you a curveball (曲线球), trust that you are strong enough to stay in the game. Adversity may bend you, but doesn’t break you. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall; all that matters is that you get up and keep moving forward. In the words of the famous Japanese saying, “Fall seven times, and stand up eight.”
7. Why does the author compare life to a roller-coaster ride?
A. He loves riding a roller-coaster.
B. Life is full of difficult choices.
C. He wants to act as a happy person.
D. Life is going with unexpected challenges.
8. The author uses the example of himself to show _________.
A. how resilience benefitted him
B. a master’s degree is hard to get
C. the doctor’s orders were unreasonable
D. how he discovered his lack of knowledge
9. What does the underlined word “unleash” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Ignore. B. Take in.
C. Bring out. D. Overcome.
10. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. Avoid falling in the same place.
D. Face adversities with confidence.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
You forgot to thank others, told a secret, or perhaps even did something that hurt someone else. It feels like you’re the worst person in the world. 11 However, you needn’t worry about it. The following suggestions will help you a lot.
Remember that it’s okay to feel guilty. “Every feeling you have serves a purpose,” says Jenny Scott. “12 Sadness lets you know you’ve lost something.” When you learn to experience guilty feelings as a way of receiving information, you have already healed from your mistakes.
Write yourself an apology (道歉) letter. Ask yourself what you’ll do differently next time, and then read what you’ve written out aloud. Be comfortable saying you let yourself down, but find strength in knowing this error doesn’t define (界定)you. 13
Be patient. This might be the hardest part. Often when you feel embarrassed (尴尬的) and guilty about your actions, you want everything to be back to normal. But you can’t rush your own feelings. 14 Try accepting that there’s nothing else you can do to solve the problem. Of course, your feelings will still be there tomorrow, but at least they won’t ruin your whole day.
15 Even if you’ve apologized to the people you’ve hurt, it’s still likely that you’ll feel em?barrassed by your actions because you’re still interested in how other people feel about you. But other people’s opinions can only carry very little weight, and their opinions are just part of the solution.
A. Don’t try to change other people.
B. Imagine what forgiveness will feel like.
C. Happiness tells you something is going right.
D. Most importantly, remember to be kind to yourself.
E. You can’t control when someone else will forgive you.
F. You have no idea when you’ll be able to forgive yourself.
G. You can’t make anyone else move faster on their feelings, either.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)

Amy Brady was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure (体形), everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Amy Brady’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium (礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Amy had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Franklin — her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Franklin took a look at Amy’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you un?comfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Amy was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Franklin had retired then.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Simmons. He heard about Amy and suggested that she have a try.
Amy didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated (犹豫) a little about it. As Amy struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Simmons called, “Amy, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Amy did as Mr Simmons told her to do. Mr Simmons sat by the piano to keep Amy company. When Amy finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr Simmons and knew the results would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Amy couldn’t sleep to night. She was suffering from the feelings that she did not fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

Dear John,
I’m sorry for not being able to watch the kung fu show with you next Friday. And I’d like to tell you the reason.
I have been preparing for a play with my partner since we signed up for the coming school art festival. Unfortunately, we will perform it next Friday night. Having devoted my spare time to it, I’m not willing to give it up.
Besides, my friend Henry, also a kung fu lover, will accompany you to the show in place of me. I’m sure you will have a good time.
I sincerely hope you can accept my apology.
Yours truly,

读后续写 (One possible version)
Paragraph 1:
The next day, Amy nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room. Her name wasn’t there. Rejected again! But as she turned to enter the classroom, she caught her name, which was posted at the top of the stage. She, Amy Brady, was chosen to be the leading singer. She would sing alone in the whole performance. There must be a mistake. Mr. Simmons would not make her — so noticeable.
Paragraph 2:
After class, Mr. Simmons talked to Amy about her part. “Amy, I hope this doesn’t upset you, but I need to show your part a little differently this year.” He continued, “I want to have a special line, and put you in front of the line. Besides, you’ll sing the high point of the song.” Amy was frightened. “Amy, I choose you because you should perform the part — your voice is unusual. Believe in yourself.” Amy Brady, with so many birth problems in her body, had a strong will. She finally stood in front of the line in the performance and sang her heart out. Never had the angel sung more sweetly.
