What is an earthquake?
An earthquake is what happens
when two plates (板块) of the earth suddenly slip past one another.
Why do earthquakes happen? Scientists explain that the outside of the earth is made of a number of different plates.

A terrible earthquake struck Sichuan, China on May 12, 2008. More than 60,000 people lost their lives.

What to do during an earthquake…
★OUTDOORS★
Move to an open area without tall trees, buildings, etc.
Move away from beaches (tsunami) or mountains (mudslides or falling rocks).
If in cars, move to the side of the road and stop the car. Fasten your seat belts until the shaking stops.
ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR AFTERSHOCKS!!!
Open the window in case of leaking gas.
Check if you have injuries.
Use cell phone only if it’s an emergency.
Cooperate with neighbors and friends.
If you can, check if your family or friends are safe.
