Decide whether to stay or go.
Leave the place if you can. Go somewhere north of the storm, where it will have lost strength by the time it reaches the area. Don’t leave your pets behind.
Find a shelter. If you decide to stay, you need to take proper shelter that will be able to protect you and your family and pets during the storm. This shelter should not have any windows or skylights.
e.g. How to Survive a hurricaneDuring the hurricane
Bring your family and pets into the shelter.
Stay away from windows, skylights and glass doors during the hurricane. The safest place inside the house is to remain on the lowest level in a hallway, closet or small interior room.
Lie on the floor under something sturdy, such as a table.
Do not use electronic devices. The battery operated radio and flashlight are fine.
Don't leave your shelter until you get the official word.
e.g. How to Survive a hurricaneAfter the hurricane
Check your home for exterior structural damage. If there are any signs of possible collapse, move away immediately. Be extra careful when entering buildings. Do not enter any buildings after the storm has passed unless you're sure they're structurally safe.
Watch for electrical sparks or frayed wires. If it is safe to turn off the electricity, do so. If you're unsure or there is water everywhere, keep away.
Use a battery powered flashlight and not candles to see by.
