Late last year, I needed to transport some furniture from our house to my son's flat in central London. I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself.
Moving the lorry backward in my yard, I crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage. Fortunately I owned the shed. I loaded up with the furniture and set out. By now it was rush hour. My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously.
At last I arrived at Charlotte Street and found an available parking space. I moved the lorry into it only to notice three people at a pavement cafe waving to me. I got out, trembling violently, like one who had just finished a stormy Atlantic crossing. “You've hit the car parked behind you,” they said. I examined the car. There were white scratches on its front face. It bore a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man. Under the severe look of the three, I left an apologetic note on the damaged car's windscreen, giving my phone number.
I unloaded the furniture, dripping the sweat, wanting only to escape from the monster. I drove it back to its base at Edgware. On arrival, the boss told me I must fill it up with petrol before returning it. “Just charge me,” I cried, still shaking with fear. He stared at me with understanding. No doubt he'd witnessed others in this state before. “How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive it back?” he asked.
He danced the great lorry through the traffic so carefully that it would have shamed me if I had not been so grateful.
篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章描述了“我”因为对自己的驾驶技术有信心而租用卡车自己装运家具,结果导致一系列问题的故事。
4.The man felt ________ to have delivered the furniture himself.
A.grateful B.proud
C.confident D.regretful
答案:D 推理判断题。根据关键信息第一段第二句“I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself.”
5.The man trembled violently because ________.
A.the lorry was too difficult to drive
B.he caused a terrible traffic accident
C.he was afraid to see the three people
D.the furniture was too heavy for him
答案:A 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“I got out, trembling violently, like one who had just finished a stormy Atlantic crossing.”可知,“我”下了车,紧张得浑身剧烈地颤抖,就像横渡了波涛汹涌的大西洋;再结合第二段最后一句“My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously.”可知,由于卡车难以驾驶,“我”战战兢兢驾车驶过大街,故A项正确。
6.The man said he was a bad man most probably because ________.
A.he shouldn't have driven the lorry himself
B.he made the traffic accident on purpose
C.he shouldn't have caused trouble for the disabled
D.he parked the big lorry on the pavement
答案:C 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“There were white scratches on its front face. It bore a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man.”可知,由于刮坏了带有残疾人标志的车,这可能会给其造成不便,因此“我”觉得自己是一个坏人,故C项正确。
7.The writer intended to suggest that ________.
A.it was thrilling to drive a lorry
B.being too confident is foolish
C.it was hard to avoid accidents
D.the boss was expert in driving
答案:B 推理判断题。通读全文可知,本文的主题句是第一段第二句“I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself.”;结合全文描述可知,“我”因为对自己的驾驶技术有信心而租用卡车自己装运家具,结果却导致一系列问题,所以本文旨在说明“过分自信是愚蠢的”,故B项正确。

People who have red hair and people who have lost their hair could finally get their own emoji (表情符号). The Emojipedia website has shown new emojis following demands that they should be more diverse. If its ideas are approved, the new emojis could be added in 2018, alongside new characters that have grey, curly or Afro hair.
“New styles focus on appearances that aren't currently supported in the informal skin tone and hair color pairings (搭配) used on many cellphones,” showed one page on the website. The page gave Jessica Chastain and Ed Sheeran as examples of people with red hair. Sinead O'Connor and Samuel I. Jackson were given as examples of people with no hair or a shaven head.
The emojis could be released in 2018 if chosen by the Unicode Consortium which met in January, 2017 following a number of complaints about lack of diversity. “Non-naturally occurring features, such as blue hair and tattoos, are not included in this project,” the website added.
At the end of 2016, Apple published its iOS 10.2 software update which included 72 new emojis such as firefighters, astronauts, rockstars and so on. But people who have red hair were notably absent, causing a global protest.
A website in Scotland demanding ginger emojis got 20,000 signatures. The main issue is that there is one organization, known as Unicode Consortium, who controls emojis on iPhone.
In March, a new list of emojis was published by Emojipedia which might be released later this year. However, the emojis need to be approved by the Unicode Technical Committee before people can use them.
In 2015, ginger emojis were published on the Google Play Store for Android. But up until now, the Unicode Consortium has not been willing to give in to ginger campaigners.
篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了表情库里将有可能增加红发人士和光头人士等专属的表情符号。
8.Which of the following emojis could be included in 2018?
A.Characters with black hair.
B.Characters with white skin.
C.Characters with shaven heads.
D.Characters with smiling faces.
9.Tattoos are rejected by the Unicode Consortium because ________.
A.there is no demand for them
B.people dislike such emojis
C.they are out of fashion
D.they are not natural identity
答案:D 细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“Non-naturally occurring features, such as blue hair and tattoos, are not included in this project”可知,诸如蓝头发和纹身之类不是天然产生的特征是不被包括在这个项目中的。因此D项正确。
10.What is the Unicode Consortium's attitude to ginger emojis?
A.Favorable. B.Ambiguous.
C.Disapproving. D.Uncaring.
答案:C 推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“But up until now, the Unicode Consortium has not been willing to give in to ginger campaigners.”
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.New Emojis to Be Added in 2018
B.Complaints about the Present Emojis
C.Demands for New and Informal Emojis
D.Global Protests Against Lack of Diversity

Here is a record of the discussion about AI (artificial intelligence) conducted by several scientists:
Scientist A: I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the AI, though I do think it will happen within the next thirty or forty years. We will probably remain in control of technology and it will help us solve many of the world's problems. However, no one really knows what will happen if machines become more intelligent than humans. They may help us, ignore us or destroy us. I tend to believe AI will have a positive influence on our future lives, but whether that is true will be partly up to us.
Scientist B: I have to admit that the potential consequences of creating something that can match or go beyond human intelligence frighten me. Even now, scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own. At some point in the near future, their intelligence may well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. Human beings evolve biologically very slowly and we would be quickly substituted. In the short term, there is the danger that robots will take over millions of human jobs, creating a large underclass of unemployed people. This could mean large-scale poverty and social unrest. In the long term, machines might decide the world would be better without humans.
Scientist C: I'm a member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Forget the movie image of a terrifying Terminator stamping on human skulls (头骨) and think of what's happening right now: military machines like drones, gun turrets and sentry robots are already being used to kill with very little human input. The next step will be autonomous “murderbots” following orders but finally deciding who to kill on their own. It seems clear to me that this would be completely unethical and dangerous for humans. We need to be very cautious indeed about what we ask machines to do.

Money is the root of all evil (邪恶) and a new study claims there may be some truth behind the saying. Scientists at the University of California Berkeley, the US, announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do immoral things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS《美国国家科学院院刊》).
They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive cars ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving modest cars.
In another experiment, a group of college students were asked if they would do immoral things in various everyday situations. Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change. Students from higher-class families were more likely to act dishonestly.
According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks, it also means they care less about other people's feelings.
Finally, it just makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self-interest,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study.
Piff pointed out that the findings don't mean that all rich people are untrustworthy or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts (本能) and values in different ways.

Driving on up to Yosemite with my family was exciting but nerve-racking (神经紧张的). I had never been to such an amazing national park before, yet I wasn't the most athletic person so I knew that I couldn't stick through all the hiking up and down. It actually ended up being a fun and adventurous experience.
The ride there was definitely long but worth it. As I woke up from my nap, I saw the beautiful scenery of the tall mountains and beautiful streams. The trails were made nicely for visitors. The waterfalls were breathtaking. Climbing up rocks was one of my favorite parts. Even though I fell a couple of times, I still had a lot of fun. The fact that my family and I spent so much time together all trying to find out which route to take and what views to watch really brought us closer together.
The great thing about nature is that, it's just you, the views, and the people around you. There's nothing there to bother you and it's the best way to relax and enjoy yourself. Yosemite has 5 of the world's highest waterfalls, and about 300 lakes. The structure of each mountain is incredible; it's formed in ways that almost take your breath away. Some of them are of a deep dark color with waterfalls forming; some are formed with spots of green peeking (窥探) out. It's definitely something you wouldn't want to miss.
Yosemite isn't the only great National Park but based on my experience I highly recommend going out and enjoying nature with family and friends. It's a great time to bond, laugh, and take in what Mother Nature offers.

The summer before my dad died, we moved house. Up until that point, our family had our own space to spread out. Money was tight, so there was no television set, but we owned a turntable on which my dad's records played constantly. Mostly, it played Bob Dylan. Tracks from The Basement Tapes and Desire became an important part of our new life. My brother and I, aged 8 and 10, climbed trees, built hideaways and learned the words of Clothes Line Saga. We would chant over the lost in our own joy.
It was January when my dad left us forever because of the cancer. He was 36 going on 37 then, the same age as Dylan. Afterwards, our laughter disappeared, but we kept on playing the records, which became our only ritual of remembrance. The two men became so intertwined in my head, and I struggled to tell them apart.
Dylan was my dad's gift to me. What child wouldn't be fascinated by songs full of pirates and seasick sailors? How did it feel to have no direction home? Farewell, Angelina became my party piece. I would sing this at church cheese and wines to the assembled audience. A lot of donations were made.
Growing up, I remained a fan of the music, but I wasn't obsessed with Dylan until one day in early 1995, my brother bought us both tickets to see him play at Brixton Academy. London felt like a long way to go. But finally seeing Dylan step out onto the stage brought a sudden rush of excitement.
I have seen Dylan a couple of times since. My brother is not around so much these days. But he was up for a visit recently. We passed a happy evening laughing and drinking, while his son, aged nine, performed his party piece Subterranean Homesick Blues for us. He sang it word-perfect. And so it goes on: Dylan's music as a gift, passed down the generations.

As missing children age, they outgrow their last known photographs, which makes finding them tough. Now AI (Artificial Intelligence) could make it quicker to match any found children to those old photos.
Police can use software to age photos of people who have been missing for a while, but these tend to work best in adults, as age-related changes of adult faces are more predictable and so easier to make.
With children, these aged images (图像) don't tend to resemble the older children, and matching photos of found children to old images in a database of missing children is difficult. “Given a recent face image of a child, it is extremely hard for a human to recognize, visually, who the child is from a large data set of child face images,” says Debayan Deb at Michigan State University.
Now Deb and his colleagues have created an algorithm (算法) to do this for them. They created a face-recognition algorithm on data sets, which contain images of nearly 1,000 children between 2 and 18 years old. Each was photographed at least four times over a period of six years.
AI learned to match recent photographs of children with images taken 2.5 years earlier 80 percent of the time.
With one year between the two photographs, the method was 90 percent accurate at recognizing faces. This dropped to 73 percent after three years. The approach beats comparing children with photos taken when they were aged 0 to 4 that have been aged by software, which stays at 50 percent recognition after six months. The new AI might help to improve accuracy of this kind of software as well.
Deb's next goal is to make the age gap wider. His team also hopes to develop an app that could be used to fight child trafficking.

A new library in Tianjin—Tianjin Binhai Public Library—recently became an online hit. The Daily Mail described it as the “world's ultimate (终极的) library”, while the word “breathtaking” was the choice of Newsweek magazine. One look at the library and you'll see why. With its futuristic (未来派的) design and walls loaded with books, it's the dream library of every book lover.
But as the surprise continues, there's a burning question lying in the back of our minds: When physical bookstores are closing down one by one, what makes libraries safe from the wave of digitalization (数字化)? And do we really still need libraries now that we've got the Internet in our hands?
Reporter Ian Clark has the answer. “Libraries are not declining in importance—people are simply changing the way they use them,” he wrote on The Guardian website.
What Clark means is that libraries have shifted from simply being storehouses of books to a medium to help “bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots”, according to website Libraries Are Essential. Since not everyone can afford a smartphone, a tablet or an Internet connection, and not everyone has the know-how to search the Internet correctly and efficiently, it's public libraries that make sure that these resources and technologies are available to a larger group of people.
“Nobody is trying to sell you anything in the library. There is no pressure to buy and there is no judgment of your choices,” Anne Goulding, a professor at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, wrote on the Newsroom website. “There are few other spaces that you can just ‘be’ in without somebody questioning your presence or your motivation.”

Japan's new luxury cruise train, the Shiki-shima, made the first appearance on May 1, 2017. Designed by the famous designer Ken Kiyoyuki Okuyama, the Shiki-shima train offers passengers a cruise ship-like experience on rails.
Information about the Rooms and Cars
Observation cars are located at the front and back of the 10-car train. Shiki-shima offers a total of 17 suite rooms. The train has 15 rooms in five regular sleeper cars, and two rooms in a luxury sleeper. All rooms come with their own private dining area and twin beds. Besides a dining car and a lounge car, the two observation cars at both ends are a highlight of the train, with large windows along the walls and roof and sofas that run the length of the car for passengers to relax and take in the mountain or coastal scenery.
The Design and Special Experience
While the Seven Stars Cruise Train has a classic Orient Express look, the room interiors (内部) of Shiki-shima have a modern Japanese design, using traditional wood materials and Japanese wash paper. The lounge car features sofas made with traditional bentwood—a technique of bending wood with steam—and hand-crafted carpets.
Unsurprisingly, the dining experience is special. French-trained chef Katsuhiro Nakamura, the first Japanese chef to receive a Michelin star, cooks with ingredients (食材) collected from stops along the train's route.
The Trips
The train can accommodate no more than 34 passengers per trip. The cost of a trip on Shiki-shima starts at ¥320,000 per person when sharing a regular room, and goes up to ¥950,000 per person when sharing the luxury suite. The first trip was experienced by passengers chosen by lottery, while following trips on Shiki-shima are already booked through to March 2018. Luxury train travel seems to be catching on in Japan.

When I was young, my parents kept the TV in the garage and most of the time I took no notice of it. Since I was four, I had been used to following my school's “no media” policy quite happily until the year when my mother moved the TV into the house and then I could watch videos on TV.
Being introduced to the world of movies through The Lord of the Rings was like suddenly seeing a new color. For months, I was attracted by the story of the hobbits and elves in Middle-earth. Discovering that I loved movies, I quickly realized that I wanted to make them. At 13, I got a MacBook and a video camera. I told everyone who would listen about the movies that I was going to make. Meanwhile, I used my laptop to watch videos at night.
I thought about movies all the time, memorized entire scenes and screenplays, and recited them in whispers to my classmates. I rewrote endings and dialogues, creating perfect movies, and enjoyed these inventions as fully as the ones on the screen.
In the 8th grade, I finished my first movie. I created rhythm with images and never thought twice about why something looked right. I sent my first movie to the film program at New York State Summer School of the Arts and it was accepted. When I arrived there, I was surprised to learn that “film” was not synonymous (近似的) with digital video. So I spent my 15th summer in a dark basement making my own film again.
I re-edited my film. When it was played in our final show that summer, the voice-over (解说) asked “What did you see?” as the image went black. Then a girl appeared, rolling down a hill. “I saw magic,” the voice-over continued as she rolled through bright sunlight, then shadow, and then sunlight.
At the end, the audience murmured, “I know what she means.” That movie was about how I saw the world. It was about the day when I watched The Lord of the Rings, sitting in a closet, seeing what I wanted to see: true magic.

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements (代替物) for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.

The noise of chattering mouths subsided (平息) as the teacher entered the classroom. “Good morning class. I am Riffat Monaf, and I will be your geography teacher.” Riffat Monaf, an interesting name and an even more interesting person. Her introduction took place about six years ago, and since then I have never met a more influential person in my life.
Mrs Monaf not only conquered me with her vast knowledge of geography, but also won me over with her smile and warm eyes. It was in her class that I traveled to the highest mountains and to the deepest seas from the comfort of the classroom. I learned about the vast oceans, the erupting volcanoes, the snow-capped mountains and the green valleys. She would often relate her adventures about traveling to different parts of the world.
Never can I forget the glory of her face when she talks about how truly beautiful this world is. If I search back my love for the environment and geography, I find her to be the source of my love for preserving nature. If one day I became an environmentalist, I know that I'll thank her for it. Apart from this, she has always greeted me with open arms and she calls her students “my children”. Mrs Monaf's morals and values rubbed_off me deeply and I have always taken her advice into consideration. She has been one of the most consistently good things in my life.
Currently, she is fighting a battle against breast cancer, and it pains me to know that after all she has done for me, I can do nothing for her except pray. Whenever I see her in school, she still keeps that kind smile and an expression so soft that it trembles my heart. Mrs Monaf still talks enthusiastically about geography, and I know that I can never see what a truly great person she has been in my life.

We may be only three weeks into December, but artist Jonnie Hartman has been in the holiday spirit for months, designing and building the Grand America Holiday Window Stroll.
The goal with each window stroll is to create playful and uplifting displays (展示), according to Hartman. “I really try to do something lighthearted, something whimsical,_that is, something everyone can imagine and maybe not see every day in the real world,” Hartman said.
She designs all of the window displays by hand, starting with pencil sketches, then illustrating the designs on her computer and sending parts of the drawings to be printed. From there, Hartman works with a team of five people to build the displays, creating, sewing and embellishing (润色) many elements by hand.
However, a challenge Hartman has faced over the years as she designed the displays is making sure all of the measurements are right for elements to fit inside the windows.
“When I was in college, I was an art major, and I thought, ‘I don't need math. I will never use it. I'm an artist,’ and guess what, it's the most important thing that I use,” Hartman said. “If I don't get that right, then the windows don't fit, the pieces don't come together and it just doesn't work out.”
The holiday window stroll gives Hartman a unique opportunity to hear the feedback from those who observe her creations, which is something she doesn't always get to experience with her other artworks. She said it's fun to hear people's reactions as they go through the holiday window stroll.
“It just makes me happy that I can kind of set the tone for people's holiday season and just maybe bring a smile to their face,” Hartman said.

11.What does Hartman think about math now?
A.She values it very much.
B.She still thinks it's useless.
C.It is a piece of cake for her.
D.It's not suitable for her to learn.
答案:A 细节理解题。题干中的关键词是math,由此定位到文章第五段中的“I thought ... it's the most important thing that I use”,由此可知,她现在非常“重视”数学,所以选A。

A.It just can make her happy.
B.She has a chance to create artworks by hand.
C.It can help improve her other artworks.
D.She can get some remarks from the viewers.

Finding your feet in a new town can be hard, especially if you're covered in fur and don't speak the language. But for pets new to Marlborough, help is at hand.
Marlborough SPCA and the Railway Café, in Blenheim, have joined forces to help welcome pets and their people to the region with a fortnightly morning tea. They hope the morning teas will get tails and tongues wagging as well as giving advice on how to make the move smoother.
Railway Café owner Leanne Harris came up with the innovative (创新的) plan as a way to help welcome people to the area. Leanne moved to Marlborough from Auckland two years ago and said she initially struggled to find friends and feel part of the community. “Coming from Auckland I thought people would open their doors and that there would be neighbours calling round with cake. I expected people to come to me and, of course, it wasn't like that. I did get lonely. I hope to save newcomers having to wait as long as I did to feel part of it all. I would like to welcome them to the town.”
Free platters of sandwiches, cakes and other goodies will be on offer, for the people, while there will be special handmade yoghurt and banana treats for the dogs. The morning teas will take place in the covered area at the back of the popular café beside the railway station off Grove Rd.
Leanne said she was happy to devote both her time and effort into giving back to the community and felt the venture was a great fit with the SPCA.
“Volunteering is such an amazing thing to do and it changed things for me completely, and I met some amazing people with similar interests.”
SPCA Op Shop manager Karina Greenall, originally from the United Kingdom, said she also wanted to help. “I can give advice on how to resettle pets, the best parks to go to, where the best walks are and where the vet centers are in town. There will be volunteering opportunities too for people where they can help out and hopefully make friends too.”

For many Americans, monarch (帝王) butterflies are a sign of changing seasons. In the late summer and early autumn, the butterflies fly south, from Canada and the United States' mainland to Mexico. But Darlene Burgess still keeps seeing the bright, colorful insects in Canada, which greatly surprises her.
Darlene Burgess notices a large number of monarch butterflies at Point Pelee National Park in Ontario, Canada, which attract a lot of visitors. “Nice as this is to see, I really wish I wouldn't see it because they're running out of time,” she said. “It's really not good for them.” Their large numbers are not normal for late October. Monarchs normally arrive in Mexico around November 1st.
There are a few reasons why the monarchs did not fly south when they were supposed to. Some monarchs were born late. Some did not move south because of warm weather. Others could not fly south because of strong winds that lasted for weeks. Now, they may be stuck because temperatures are starting to fall. Elizabeth Howard is a biologist and director of a non-profit group called Journey North. She said the Monarch's muscles do not work well when temperatures go below 15 degrees Celsius.
“Monarchs have faced a number of problems in recent years. Habitat loss, climate change, and chemical pesticides have hurt the butterfly population, but it seemed that the climate change contributed most to the problems,” said Lincoln Brower, a biology professor at Sweet Briar College. Brower has been studying the butterflies since 1954. The colorful creatures also have a decreasing food supply, especially in the form of milkweed, which are the only food they can eat when they are caterpillars (毛虫).

I've never been the kind of person to say, “it's the thought that counts” when it comes to gifts. That was until a couple of weeks ago, when my kids gave me a present that blew_me_away.
For years now, I've been wanting to sell our home, the place where my husband and I raised our kids. But to me, this house is much more than just a building.
In the front room, there's a wall that has hundreds of pencil lines, marking the progress of my children's growth.
Every growth stage is marked in grey, with each child's name and the date when they were measured. Of all the objects and all the memories, it's this one thing in a home that's the hardest to leave behind. Friends I know have returned home after work only to discover their wall of heights has been freshly painted over. A new paint job wouldn't normally be greeted by tears, but erasing that evidence of motherhood hurts more than it should. Our kids grow in so many ways, but the wall is physical evidence of their progress, right there for everyone to see.
Over the years, I've talked about how much I would hate leaving that wall behind when I moved, even though the last marks were made 10 years ago when my kids stopped growing.
So one day, while I was at work, my children decided to do something about it.
They hired Jacquie Manning, a professional photographer whose work is about capturing (捕捉) the beautiful things in life, from clear lakes and skies to diamonds and ballgowns (晚礼服).
She came to our house while I was at work, and over several hours, took photos of the hundreds of drawings and lines, little grey fingerprints (指纹), and old marks. Somehow, she managed to photograph all those years of memories perfectly. Afterwards, she put all the photos together into one image, transforming them into a beautiful history of my family.
Three weeks later, my children's wonderful gift made its way to me—a life-size photo of the pencil lines and fingerprints that represents entire lifetimes of love and growth.

Encouraging life to bloom (兴旺) in the middle of a desert is no easy task. But one company in the United Arab Emirates has come up with a plan to provide drinking water for the state's citizens. The company intends to drag icebergs from Antarctica to the gulf coast in order to harvest its fresh water.
The company plans to source the massive blocks of ice from Heard Island, around 600 miles off the coast of mainland Antarctica. It will then transport them around 5,500 miles to Fujairah, one part of the UAE. One iceberg could provide enough water for one million people over five years, according to the company.
The company's director says they have already travelled the transportation route and checked the possibility of the scheme, according to reports in Gulf News. Speaking to the site about what he is calling the UAE Iceberg Project, Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi said, “We have made the technical and financial plan. We will start the project at the beginning of 2018. We want it mainly for the water. It could also be good for tourism and the weather.”
The UAE is one of the driest countries in the world, due to its extremely arid climate, which receives less than four inches of rainfall per year. Despite that, it consumes more water than double the global national average, putting the country at severe risk of droughts over the next 25 years.
An average iceberg contains more than 20 billion gallons of water, according to the company. The iceberg takes a long time to melt as 80 percent of it is under the water, while the white ice above reflects sunlight and deflects (使转向) its heat. Blocks of ice will be placed in giant tanks, before being processed. “This is the purest water in the world,” Mr Al Shehi added.

(2019·江苏六校联考)Think about the last time you felt a negative emotion—like stress, anger, or __1__. What was going through your __2__ as you were going through that negativity? Was your mind cluttered (混乱的) with thoughts? Or was it paralyzed, unable to __3__?
The next time you find yourself in the __4__ of a very stressful time, or you feel angry or frustrated, stop. Whatever you're doing, stop and sit for one minute. While you're sitting there, __5__ immerse yourself in the negative emotion.
Allow that emotion to __6__ you. Allow yourself one minute to truly feel that emotion. Don't __7__ yourself here. Take the entire minute—but only one minute—to do __8__ else but feel that emotion.
When the minute is over, ask yourself, “Am I willing to keep __9__ to this negative emotion __10__ I go through the rest of the day?”
Once you've allowed yourself to be totally immersed in the emotion and really __11__ it, you will be surprised to find that the emotion __12__ rather quickly.
This exercise seems simple—almost too simple. __13__,it is very effective. By allowing that negative emotion the __14__ to be truly felt, you are dealing with the emotion __15__ stuffing it down and trying not to feel it. You are actually __16__ the power of the emotion by giving it the space and attention it needs. When you immerse yourself in the emotion, and realize that it is only emotion, it __17__ its control. You can clear your head and proceed with your task.
Try it. Keep a piece of paper with you that says the following: __18__. Immerse for one minute. Do I want to keep this negativity? Breathe deeply, exhale, release all that negativity. Move on! This will __19__ you of the steps to the process. Remember: take the time you need to really immerse yourself in the emotion. Then, when you feel you've felt it __20__, release it—really let go of it. You will be surprised at how quickly you can move on from a negative situation and get to what you really want to do!

“Are you going to Seattle?” an anxious-looking woman asked a female traveler at the Amtrak Station in Sacramento. “No, I'm going to Eugene,” the traveler replied. “Oh, I was hoping you could watch out for my daughter; she's never been on a train before.”
Since I am a seasoned train traveler, I know that seats and cars are assigned by destination. So I approached the woman and her frightened-looking daughter and told them that her daughter could sit with me and that I would take care of her for the duration of the journey.
The train had arrived 25 minutes late, and people rushed to get their seat assignments. The conductor wanted to know if there were people traveling together, so I pushed my way to the front of the line with the girl and we were arranged to sit next to each other. Once on board, I showed her where to put her luggage, and took her to the bathroom area. We settled down to sleep. In the morning, she became comfortable enough to do what most 15-year olds do, talk and text on her mobile phone.
Throughout the trip, I made sure she picked up her ID, which had fallen out of her backpack, and generally kept an eye on her in a non-intrusive way. I hope someone takes her under their wing when she flies (another anxiety-producing first) back to Sacramento.
I do hope that kindness will spread around the world through these ways. We're conditioned to think that our lives revolved (旋转) around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware, beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

When Daniel Kish enters a room, he may not be able to see, but his ears give him a 360 degree view. Kish uses echolocation (回声定位)—just like bats or whales—to sense the world. And it allows him to do everything from cycling to hiking, all on his own, without the benefit of sight.
Kish was affected by retinal (视网膜的) cancer and had to have both eyes removed before he was 13 months old. Amazingly, he taught himself that by making small noises he could listen for their echoes (回声) and learn what surrounded him. Today, at age 51, Kish is an expert at human echolocation.
Like many of those who use echoes, Kish makes clicking noises with his tongue and then listens for their echoes in the environment. “It is the same process bats use,” Kish told BBC News. “You send out a sound or a call and sound waves are physical waves—they bounce back from physical surfaces.”
As Kish, a “real-life Batman”, explains in this TED talk, echolocation allows him to distinguish not only an object's size but its texture.
So he can tell the difference between a tree, a wooden fence and a car, all with just a few clicks of his tongue. This ability has made Kish, and other human echolocaters, the subject of a number of studies aimed at better understanding the process.
In 2009, a Spanish study analyzed the clicking noise that Kish used to sense the world and found that his method of pulling his tongue backward instead of downward from the roof of his mouth created a noise that was sharp and clean and perfectly suited to echolocation. A few years later, another study from researchers at the University of Western Ontario used brain mapping to determine that the area of the brain that a sighted person would use to interpret visual information works in a blind person who uses echolocation.
Researchers also have learned that human echolocation can be taught and requires only a few weeks of practice. Kish, through his non-profit organization World Access for the Blind, hopes to do that by training sight-impaired individuals all over the world to become more independent in their environment.

(2019·百校联盟联考)Caroline Solomon was on her high school's swim team. But at times she could not go into the creek (溪流) near her home. It was simply too polluted. “I decided I wanted to do something about it,” she recalls. So she studied environmental science and public policy at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. Later, she went to graduate school. Some of her classes could be challenging, though, since she couldn't hear her teachers. “I've been deaf since I was 15 months old.” Solomon notes.
Today she teaches biology at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. She has no trouble communicating with her students. They, too, are primarily deaf or hard of hearing. That's why all classes at Gallaudet are taught in American Sign Language. Solomon also has an active life outside the classroom. She especially enjoys hiking, biking and other activities with her family.
Her research takes her to the Anacostia River. “It is very close to Gallaudet, and I easily bring my students there,” she says. Water running through local forests and marshes drains into this river. So does water running off urban streets, golf courses and industrial sites. “The river's watershed (集水区) kind of concentrates all the things that happen when humans mess with the natural landscape,” she explains. Not surprisingly, this river has developed a reputation for being quite polluted.
Solomon has been focusing on how pollutants affect tiny organisms that form the base of the river's food web. “I am now looking at the bacteria population,” she says, “to see what types there are.”
Solomon wants to see more students who are deaf or have other disabilities make a difference in environmental science and other fields. As she often says, “If I can do it, you can do it.”

I handed the card from my school's help-wanted board to the man behind the counter of Mort's Deli (熟食店) at the Farmers Market in Los Angeles. Even before I opened my mouth, he was shaking his head.
It was September 1957, and my family had just arrived in California. My father only got work two or three days a week. Our poor savings were gone, and as the eldest boy of the family, I was the only one able to help.
“Let me work the rest of the week, and if you don't like the way I do the job, don't pay me,” I said. The tall man stared at me, then nodded. At Mort's, I worked very hard. Near the end of the day he called me up to him. “How much did that card at school say this job paid?” he asked. “One dollar an hour,” I whispered. Actually I was willing to take less.
“That's not enough for someone who works as hard as you,” Mort said. “You start at $1.25.” Over the next few weeks I learned a lot about Mort. Our store was closed on Sundays, so every Saturday evening Mort urged me to take home the leftover soup. It_was_a_meal_in_itself,_a_treat_for_my_struggling_family.
One Saturday after work, I was about to step in my house when I saw a large man in my father's chair. He was swearing at my father. I quietly walked into the kitchen and listened through the door. The man wanted to take our car. Dad offered to make the three payments that were due, but the man demanded the entire sum—$325—or the car. I slipped out of the door, thinking: Who might have $325? Who would even consider lending me so much money?
The only person I could think of was Mort. I ran back to his deli and told him my tale. “So, could you possibly lend, my father $325?” I finished, realizing how absurd it sounded. Although Mort's eyes bored (挖) holes in my face, he gave me $325, saying, “I'll take back half your wages until it's repaid.”
That night I was a hero to my family. But the real hero was Mort Rubin, who quietly raised my salary every month afterwards. He made the world a better place.

At a farm off Narrow Lane near Lexington, Kentucky, the US, old-fashioned houses look over the little red barn (畜舍). The farm is mostly empty now. Jim Mahan and his family, who lived there for generations, have moved to a different plot of land in northern Fayette County. As land is sold, houses go up where there once were fields.
But during the summer, the barn is filled with city kids who have come to enjoy the farm. They're members of the Fayette County Livestock (FCL) Club, which showcases skills as varied as cutting wool. The barn is where they look after the animals. “A lot of Lexington kids don't know anything about farm life,” said Adria Meier, 17, who has looked after goats and sheep for three years. “There is so much to learn.”
The dozen or so children who take care of their goats and sheep at the little red barn must do a six-hour class before they get an animal. They pay for their own animals but get special club programs, such as one that provides vets (兽医).
Mahan lets the group use the barn for free, and the kids spend up to three hours a day there during the summer. But as his land gets sold, he doesn't know whether the club can continue. What makes the FCL Club special is that most of the kids can't just walk out their doors and take care of their animals. Most are driven to the barn by their mothers, who usually hang around and chat as their kids feed and exercise the animals.
There are valuable lessons learned along the way. For instance, don't cut wool off your goat when there is wind, and sheep are social animals and will cry loudly when separated. “Tending animals helps teach us responsibility. Unlike learning to shoot an arrow, caring for an animal isn't something you can simply abandon,” said Carly Playforth, 16, of Lexington.

(2019·贵州省遵义航天高级中学高三四模)Try this: For an entire day, forget about the clock. Eat when you're hungry and sleep when you're tired. What do you think will happen?
You may be surprised to find that your day is much like most other days. You'll probably get hungry when you normally eat and tired when you normally sleep. Even though you don't know what time it is, your body does. These patterns of daily life are called circadian rhythms (生理节奏), and they are more than just habits. Inside our bodies are several clocklike systems that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle. Throughout the day and night, our inner clocks direct changes in temperature, body chemicals, hunger, sleepiness and more.
Everyone's rhythms are different, which is why you might like to stay up late while your sister always wants to go to bed early. But on the whole, everyone is programmed to feel tired at night and energetic during the day. Learning about our body clocks may help scientists understand why problems arise when we act out of step with our circadian rhythms. For example, traveling across time zones can make people wake up in the middle of the night. Regularly staying up late can make kids do worse in tests.
“There is a growing sense that when we eat and when we sleep are important parts of how healthy we are,” says Steven Shea, director of the Sleep Disorders Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
One way to learn about how our body clocks tick is to mess them up and see what happens. That's what neurologist (神经病学家) Frank Scheer and his workmates did in a recent study. Staying up night after night, their studies suggest, could make kids extra hungry and more likely to gain weight. And regularly sleeping too little, Scheer says, may be one cause of the recent increase in childhood obesity.
篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述长期形成的生理节奏会保持我们的正常生活,生物钟紊乱会影响我们的生活。
5.What will happen if you forget about the clock according to the passage?
A.You will feel upset.
B.You will behave normally.
C.Your body will not know what time it is.
D.You will probably get hungry more easily.
答案:B 推理判断题。第二段中的第一、二句“You may be surprised to find that your day is much like most other days. You'll probably get hungry when you normally eat and tired when you normally sleep.”说明你可能会惊讶地发现,你的一天和大多数其他日子很相似。由此可知即使不知道时间,人们的作息也会和平时一样。故B项正确。
6.Mike feels energetic at 12 midnight while Tom feels sleepy. What advice would be given by the writer?
A.Both should see a doctor.
B.Tom should see a doctor.
C.Both should take it easy.
D.Mike should have a watch.
答案:C 推理判断题。第三段中的第一句“Everyone's rhythms are different, which is why you might like to stay up late while your sister always wants to go to bed early.”
7.How do Frank Scheer and his workmates study body clocks?
A.By seeing what happens when they are messed up.
B.By asking questions and collecting answers.
C.By studying people traveling across time zones.
D.By programming people with man-made clocks.
答案:A 细节理解题。最后一段第一句“One way to learn about how our body clocks tick is to mess them up and see what happens.”说明了解我们的生物钟是如何运转的一个方法是把它们弄乱,看看会发生什么。结合该段第二句可知Frank Scheer及其工作伙伴正是用这种方法做近期的研究的。故A项正确。
8.What will the writer most probably talk about next?
A.Other examples of what people will do when their body clocks go wrong.
B.Some effective medicines that can keep people from putting on weight.
C.The importance of eating healthy food.
D.What circadian rhythms are and how they work.
C
Competition in the workplace can be a good thing for a number of different reasons. On the other hand, competition can also have some disadvantages, though. Some industries tend to be more competitive in the workplace than others. For instance, those in the sales field will typically be more competitive with co-workers than individuals in other fields, such as information technology. Nevertheless, a little competition in even the least competitive industries can be positive.
Competition in the workplace can create an environment where employees push each other to exceed their normal limits, which can result in increased production, both at an individual level and among the entire workforce as a whole. As individual production numbers increase, so do those of the entire team of workers who seek to outdo one another. Competition can be rewarded with bonuses or various types of rewards.
Workplace competition can also inspire a commitment to self-improvement. While financial motivations and bonuses are always a plus to get the competition going, those who see the bigger picture may take the competition as an opportunity to better themselves in the process of winning the competition. Self-improvement may include actions like changing work habits to be more organized, using visualization and goal setting to achieve goals and simply performing higher quality work.
Not all competition in the workplace necessarily has to take place at the individual level. Competition can bring about a sense of teamwork in the workplace when workers are placed in groups and asked to compete with one another, which can have a number of positive results that come from workers cooperating with each other. For example, workers can learn the value of communication and helping someone else, both of which have an influence on other areas of work like customer service.
