Many people catch colds in spring and fall. It makes us wonder: if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can’t they find a good remedy for the common cold? The answer is easy. There are hundreds of kinds of cold viruses out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a remedy for each one. When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. You feel terrible, but your body is actually fighting the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. Unit 2 1. 注意连读、语调和停顿

Many kids think they are ordinary. They think they aren’t the prettiest or the smartest. At the same time, they might not think they are the ugliest or the silliest, either, which would at least make them stand out. Everyone feels that way sometimes, especially in middle school. Kids seldom realize how special they are. It is part of growing up. Growing up means understanding what you can offer the world. When you’re young, you should realize that just by being yourself, you do offer something to other people. You might not be the best, but that doesn’t mean you’re not amazing. If you try your best, you will always be pretty amazing.Unit 2 2. 注意失去爆破和不完全爆破

If you travel to some towns in India, you might be lucky enough to be served by special guides — monkeys. These monkeys are always ready to help you. When you are hungry, you only have to point at your stomach and they will show you to a restaurant. If you are tired, put your hands behind your head and the monkeys will take you to a hotel. Don’t be surprised when they put their hands in front of you after they have helped you. They just hope you can give them a little money as a tip. After you have given them the money, they’ll wave their hands to say good-bye. Unit 2 3. 注意辅音连缀和停顿

There are two kinds of memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory lasts up to five to ten minutes. We always want to encourage information to go from our short-term memory to our long-term memory, so that in the future we can find the information again in our long-term memory. Here are some suggestions for doing this. Look only for important information. If the information is important, you are more likely to notice it and remember it than if it is not important. Grouping your information is also helpful. If you want to remember a lot of information, try to organize it.Unit 2 4. 注意辅音连缀、连读和语调

Getting rid of waste properly is a great problem for the world today. Waste must be treated so that it does not become dangerous. Unfortunately, in some countries, waste from factories is still poured straight into rivers. People who use the water from these rivers often get sick. The water may become so polluted that it kills all the fish in the river. When these rivers finally reach the sea, the water pollutes the ocean. In many countries with coasts, human waste is transported directly into the sea without being dealt with. Although the sea itself can break up the waste, the beaches may become polluted. The problem of dealing with waste has become so great that several international organizations have been set up to protect the environment throughout the world and control pollution.Unit 2 5. 注意失去爆破和不完全爆破及语调

Most Americans don’t like to get advice from members of their family. When they need advice, they don’t usually ask people they know. Instead, many Americans write letters to newspapers and magazines that give advice about many different subjects, including family problems, the use of language, health, cooking, children, and how to buy a house or a car. Most newspapers regularly print letters from readers with these types of problems. Unit 2 6. 注意连读、辅音连缀和语调
Along with the letters are answers written by people who know how to solve such problems. Some of these writers are doctors; others are lawyers or educators. But two of the most famous writers of advice are women without special training for this kind of work. One of them is addressed in her letters as “Dear Abby”; the other is addressed as “Dear Ann Landers”. Experience is their only form of training for giving advice.Unit 2 6. 注意连读、辅音连缀和语调
