Dear Tom,
I'm very happy to hear that you're coming to China as an exchange student next week. Let me give you some suggestions and advice about Chinese customs and table manners.
When you meet someone for the first time, you're supposed to shake hands and greet each other rather than bow, hug or kiss. Remember, it's impolite to show up at someone's house for the first time with empty hands. You'd better bring a small gift. During the dinner, you shouldn't start eating first if there are older people at the table. We use chopsticks to have meals while you use knives and forks. You're not expected to point at anyone with your chopsticks. It's impolite to stick your chopsticks into your food. Also,it's bad manners to make noise when you are having meals. Besides, In the host family, you are supposed to knock at the door first before entering someone's room and alway keep your room clean and tidy. When you go out with people, it's important to make plans first and you are expected to tell the hostess who you go with , where you are going and whether you will be back for dinner or not. In china, the host family will worry about your safety.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful.
Have a safe trip, and I look forward to meeting you soon! Best wishes, Li Ming
