When
I
volunteered
to
spend
a
summer
on
a
land-based
whale-watching
project
in
the
West
of
Scotland,
the
project
secretary
warned
me,
“You
have
to
be
able
to
detect
the
whales
from
the
shore-
it’s
not
as
easy
as
you
think.”
Although
I
assumed
I
was
well

qualified
for
the
job,
at
the
start
of
the
project
I
had
a
few
embarrassing
moments
screaming
“Whale!”
before
realizing
that
what
I
was
pointing
out
were
only
waves
breaking
over
underwater
rocks,
not
sea
creatures
at
all!
After
a
while,
I
trained
my
eyes
to
“see”—
to
distinguish
between
waves
hitting
rocks
and
the
rolling
movements
of
whales
underwater.
I
spent
a
lot
of
time
just
watching
the
sea
through
my
binoculars(双筒望眼镜),
looking
actively
for
anything
that
indicated
sea
life
below.
My
binoculars
enabled
me
to
spot
the
fins(鳍)
of
a
dolphin
against
the
darkness
of
the
sea,
and
without
a
good
pair
of
binoculars
I
definitely
would
have
missed
out
on
lots
of
amazing
sea
life.
In
addition,
I
eventually
realized
that
the
birds
provide
us
with
signals
that
whales
and
dolphins
maybe
in
the
area.
Where
there
is
a
group
of
feeding
seabirds
such
as
seagulls
or
gannets,
there
is
often
a
whale
feeding
under
them.
Gannets
are
really
easy
to
spot
from
a
distance—they
drop
out
of
the
sky
at
speeds
of
up
to
100kph,
spearing
the
surface
and
sending
bursts
of
water
up
behind
them.
If
you
want
to
try
this
activity,
it
is
worth
organizing
and
planning
carefully
for
whale
watching.
I
recommend
having
a
notebook
and
pencil
nearby
to
record
details
of
what
you’ve
seen
and
the

environmental
conditions
at
the
time.
This
is
not
only
a
helpful
aid
in
general,
but
you
can
also
contribute
your
sightings
to
research
projects
such
as
the
Sea
Watch
Foundation,
which
are
monitoring
the
distributions
of
whales
and
dolphins.
Despite
the
early
disappointments
I
had,
I
think
there
is
undoubtedly
something
very
special
about
watching
whales.
Nothing
can
compare
with
the
secret
thrill
and
peacefulness
of
seeing
a
wild
animal
just
doing
its
own
thing.

If
you
make
a
list
of
the
top
ten
most
challenging
jobs
in
the
world,
chances
are
that
being
a
teacher
will
not
make
the
cut.
Let’s
think
about
their
complex
task
millions
of
educators
face
each
day
as
they
try
to
teach
a
group
of
often
unfriendly,
disorderly
kids
into
intelligent,
well-rounded
individuals.
That
surely
has
to
be
the
toughest
job
in
the
world,
especially
taking
into
consideration
that
there
is
no
promotion
waiting
for
them
even
if
they
are
wildly
successful.
What
if
these
all-important
individuals
that
we
often
take
for
granted
disappear
from
our
lives
That
was
what
Project
Ed
and
Participant
Media’s
teaching
campaign
asked
filmmakers
of
all
ages
to
envision(想象)for
their
recently-held
contest.
Their
short
films
were
called
“A
World
without
Teachers”,
whose
intention
was
to
inspire
more
young
people
to
become
teachers.
However,
the
62
amazing
video
submissions(提交物)also
serve
as
a
reminder
of
how
terrible
things
would
be
if
we
didn’t
have
these
selfless
individuals
guiding
us
through
life.
What
was
interesting
is
that
even
the
youngest
contestants
didn’t
accept
the
idea
that
there’s
no
person
to
tell
them
what
to
do.
High-school

Marina
Barham’s
video
describes
a
fact
we
all
know
but
often
forget.
Teachers
don’t
just
teach;
they
inspire—something
that
no
electronic
device,
no
matter
how
smart,
can
do!
So
the
next
time
you
think
your
teacher
is
being
“troublesome”
for
trying
to
channel
you
in
the
right
direction,
imagine
a
life
without
him/her.
We
have
a
feeling
it
will
not
appear
as
rosy!

Parents
need
to
be
good
role
models
to
help
their
children
make
sensible
financial
decisions,
according
to
Adam
Hancock
and
his
team,
from
East
Carolina
University
in
the
US.
Their
work
highlights
that
parents
who
argue
about
finances
contribute
to
increasing
credit
card
debt
among
their
children
during
their
students’
years.
Their
work
is
published
online
in
Springer’s
Journal
of
Family
and
Economic
Issues.
Credit
card
debt
among
college
students
has
been
a
growing
concern
for
researchers
and
policymakers
over
the
last
decade.
In
addition,
there
is
growing
concern
among
educators
that
more
students
are
dropping
out
of
school,
not
because
of
academic
failure,
but
because
of
financial
reasons,
and
credit
card
especially.
Hancock
and
colleagues’
study
is
the
first
to
examine
how
parental
interactions,
and
financial
knowledge
and
attitudes
may
have
a
cumulative
effect(累积效
应)on
the
number
of
credit
cards
students
own
and
their
level
of
credit
card
debt.
The
researchers
analyzed
data
for
420
undergraduate
students
from
seven
different
American
universities,
who
took
part
in
the
College
Student
Financial
Literacy
Survey.
According
to
the
online
survey,
nearly
two-thirds
of
student
had
a
credit
card,
and
nearly
a
third
had
more
than
one.
Those
students
who
reported
that
their
parents
argued
about
finances
were
more
likely
to
have
more
than
two
cards
than
the
students
whose
parents
who
did
not
argue
about
finances.
In
terms
of
debt,
those
students
who
had
two
or
more
credit
cards
were
nearly
three
times
more
likely
to
report
having
credit
card
debt
over$500.
The
researchers
conclude,
“It
is
clear
that
the
influence
of
parents
cannot
be
neglected.
Researchers,
educators
and
policymakers
should
work
in
finding
effective
ways
to
increase
the
positive
financial
behaviors
for
college
students.
We
need
to
help
students
learn
financial
skills
and
establish
healthy
financial
attitudes
at
earlier
ages
to
prevent
poor
financial
habits
from
taking
root.”
32.
In
Adam
Hancock’s
research,
student’s
credit
card
debt
is
related
to
their
___________.
A.
knowledge
B.
school
C.
concerns
D.
parents
33.
When

have

they
may
_____________.
A,

B.

C.

D.

In

the

And
the
number

people
becoming
volunteers
are
increasing
every

since
volunteering
is
of
great
benefit
from
both
those
in

For
example,
there
were
about
1,700,000

As

By

not

do
we

I

W:
Look
Jeff,
if
you
want

that’s
OK
with
me,
but
you
can’t
keep
asking
me
to
pay
for
it!
M:
OK,
OK,
you’re
right.
But
what
do
you
think
I
ought
to
do
W:
Well,
I
think
you
had
better
go
on
a
budget.
Make
a
list
of
all
your
income
and
all
your
expenses.
Don’t
spend
more
than
you
earn.
M:
But
my
expenses
are
always
larger
than
my
income.
W:
Then
maybe
you
should
work
more
hours
at
the
computer
store.
M:
I
already
work
15
hours
a
week!
Maybe
I
should
just
drop
out
of
school,
work
full-time,
and
play
in
the
band
in
the
evenings.
W:
Come
on,
Jeff,
when
I
was
your
age

M:
I
know,
I
know.
When
you
were
my
age
you
were
already
married
and
working
and
going
to
school

W:
Thank
you
to
all
the
competitors.
I
won’t
say
much
because
I
know
you’re
all
anxious
to
hear
the
results

it
was
a
very
difficult
decision
and
I’ll
start
with
the
band
which
came
in
fourth.
That’s
Texas
Team,
who
are
the
youngest
group
here
today.
Unfortunately,
the
violinist
played
so
quietly
that
we
couldn’t
hear
him.
So
bad
luck
to
Texas
Team.
Third
was
Eastside.
They
are
such
good
dancers
they
should
enter
for
a
dance
competition.
And
with
a
bit
more
practice
on
the
music
they’ll
do
very
well.
In
second
place
is
Third
Avenue.
They
did
well,
especially
their
young
guitarist,
but
the
singer
looked
so
unhappy
we
thought
maybe
he
didn’t
want
to
win!
Never
mind

you
nearly
won,
so
better
luck
next
time.
Congratulations
to
The
Storm
who
are
our
winners
to
day.
The
singer
had
such
a
great
voice
that
we
had
to
give
them
first
place.
Well
done.
