A comet is a small chunk of dust and ice that travels around the sun. There are billions of comets in the solar system, but most never pass close by earth. The best known comet is called Halley’s Comet. It can be seen from earth about every 76 years. The main part of a comet is called the nucleus. It is made of frozen water and gases plus dust and rock. Most of the time a comet consists of only its nucleus. When passing close to the sun, it heats up and begins to outgas, displaying a visible atmosphere or coma, and sometimes also a tail.

Mr and Mrs Nakamura were worried. Their dog Shiro was missing. The couple lived on a small island in Japan. They looked everywhere on the island, but they couldn’t find Shiro. The next day Mr Nakamura heard a noise at the front door. He opened the door, and there was Shiro. Shiro was very wet. A few days later Shiro disappeared again. He disappeared in the morning, and he came back late at night. When he came back, he was wet too. Shiro began to disappear often. Mr Nakamura was curious. “Where does Shiro go?” he wondered. “Why is he wet?” One morning, Mr Nakamura followed his dog. Shiro swam for about two miles. Then he was tired, so he climbed onto a rock and rested. A few minutes later he jumped back into the water and continued swimming. Shiro swam for three hours. Then he arrived at an island. He walked to a house. A dog was waiting in front of the house. Shiro ran to the dog. The dog’s name was Marilyn. She was Shiro’s friend. Shiro and the Nakamuras used to live on Marilyn’s island. When the Nakamuras moved to another island, Shiro missed Marilyn so much, so Shiro swam to the island to visit Marilyn. People were amazed when they heard about Shiro.
