Reading body language to know if a person is lying applies not just to ordinary people but even to professionals, as well. The police use it to be sure whether the person is guilty of a certain wrongdoing(坏事) or not, teachers employ it to find out if a child really has or hasn’t done his or her homework and parents apply it to find out if their teenagers really did go to a group study meeting as they said they would.
In the past, it seemed like reading body language to judge guilt may not have been in effect, at least in some cultures. Tribal groups of centuries used to figure out if a native committed a crime (犯罪) using pain tests, such as dipping a hand in boiling water, walking on burning coals, and others.
For example, a native whose hand came out burnt after a dip in boiling water is considered guilty at the time. Luckily, no such judging process exists any more and we have the chance to explain ourselves by appearing in court and giving our statements. However, it may not be easy either, because it requires knowledge of reading body language.
How can you tell if the other person is lying through his teeth? There are several ways to tell. One is when the other person is unable to look at you in the eyes as he tells a lie. Thus, if you ask your partner if he has been cheating on you, you will know that something is wrong if he says he hasn’t but looks elsewhere while he says so.
56. Why did the writer mention the police, teachers and parents?
A. To show all the people who read body language can know if a person is lying.
B. To show they are doing different kinds of jobs.
C. To show police are much cleverer than teachers and parents.
D. To show all of them can read body language.
57. How did tribal groups find out if a native committed a crime several hundred years ago?
A. By being decided by their leaders.
B. By using pain tests.
C. By appearing in court.
D. Through his teeth.
58. The passage mainly tells us ________________________________.
A. we can catch a liar (说谎者) by body language
B. the importance of body language
C. how we should use body language
D. the history of body language being used
B
Cynthia Kadohata wrote Kira-Kira and never thought it would be so popular among students. It is a book about a young Japanese-American girl, Katie Takeshima, and the difficulties that her family have to face when they are forced to move to Georgia. This book tells the story of one family’s journey to a new place, their experience of racism, and the ability of people to move forward through hard time.
In the book, Kate and Lynn Takeshima are sisters. The story begins in Lowa, where their parents’ small family-owned store runs out of business. Soon after, the Takeshimas begin to face financial difficulties and they have to go in search of a new living. The family moves to Georgia where they work at a hatchery(孵化厂)with their uncle. On the way to their new home in Georgia they experience racism. They have difficulty in “fitting in” when a hotel manager tells them to go to “the back” where the “Indians” have to stay.
Life gets even harder for the Takeshimas when they begin to work at the hatchery. Katie’s parents are over-worked there. They have to stay in a cramped apartment with little space. And as if that isn’t enough, Katie has too much schoolwork to do. During Katie’s struggle, Lynn becomes sick and Katie feels unsafe, because she has always looked up to Lynn. There are hard times that Katie and her family have to experience. This story is a beautiful-example of resilience (适应力) and friendship. It also opens the reader’s eyes to some of the struggles that Asian Americans are facing.
59. Why does the family have to move to Georgis?
A. They are not used to the life in Lowa.
B. They don’t have enough money to live in Lowa.
C. People look down on them in Lowa.
D. They want to open a hatchery in Georgia.
60. From the second paragraph, we can infer that Indians ___________.
A. run the hotel B. are not friendly
C. have a hard life D. like staying in the back
61. The underlined word “cramped” in the third paragraph probably means ____________.
A. comfortable B. crowded C. quiet D. bright
62. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the passage?
A. Katie’s parents died in the hatchery.
B. Lynn really looked up to Katie.
C. Katie’s uncle owned the hatchery.
D. Katie went on schooling in Georgia.
Section C(8分)
Directions:Choose from the sentence A-F to complete the passage. There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
Daydreaming means people think about something pleasant, especially when this makes them forget what they should be doing. Daydreamers have a bad reputation for being unaware of what’s happening around them. They can seem forgetful and clumsy._63__They annoy us because they seem to be ignoring us and missing the important things.
But daydreamers are also responsible for some of the greatest ideas and achievements in human history. __64__ Can you imagine what kind of world we would have without such ideas and inventions?
So how can you come up with brilliant daydreams and avoid falling over tree roots or otherwise looking like a fool?
First, understand that some opportunities(机会) for daydreaming are better than others. Feeling safe and relaxed will help you to slip into daydreams.__65_ And if you want to improve your chances of having a creative idea while you’re daydreaming, try to do it while you are involved in another task—preferably something simple, like taking a shower or walking, or even making meaningless drawings.
It’s also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate. “Mindfulness”, being focused, is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep.__66__
Finally, you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away. Therefore, it is a good idea to keep a notebook or voice recorder nearby when you are in the daydream zone.
A. Having interesting things to think about also helps.B. They stare off into space and wander by themselves.C. Without wandering minds, we wouldn’t have relatively, Coke or Post-it notes.D. At one time, daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses.E. It involves slow, steady breathing for self-control that helps people stay calm and attentive.F. Daydreams are often very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand.

Section B
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Now, our special news report.
A group of 80 travelers from Britain on Saturday walked along 18 kilometers of a Beijing section of the Great Wall to raise funds for lung cancer patients.
The walking programme was organized by Lung cancer and Care, a British foundation established in 2008 to provide support for lung cancer patients.
Each year the BBC arranges a travelling programme for British people and walking in China is one of the most popular trips. Group members, aged from 50 to 85 years old, have been in China for three days and helped raised 120,000 pounds in Britain. About 8 tourist groups are scheduled for this year.
One of the travelers, who suffered from lung cancer, said he enjoyed walking on the Great wall as he had never been to China before. He told Xinhua News Agency that the best way to fight against disease is to participate in activities like this and to help other patients. And he said four years ago, he almost gave up hope after undergoing three operations, but his confidence was restored with the help from some cancer foundations and his situation later improved.
11. For what purpose did the travelers walk along the Great Wall?
12. How far did the travelers walk along the Great Wall?
13. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Today’s parents are selective about almost everything they can provide for their kids. How to choose food wisely is one of their top concerns. A recent food study has taught parents how to do it. First, choose organic food as often as you can, especially for these types that typically contain the highest levels of pesticide substance: peaches and apples, pears, for example.
Besides, fish is some of the healthiest food you can eat, but choose carefully because some types contain poisonous chemicals. When preparing fish, remove skin, and bake, or grill fish so that the fat drips away. Avoid bluefish, and swordfish as they are hard to digest for kids.
And one important thing is to limit your consumption of canned foods because the can typically contain harmful material, which may pollute food. And although popcorns are the kids’favourite, parents should remember to avoid microwave popcorn. You can choose ready-to-eat popcorn or pop your own popcorn on the stove as the insides of microwave popcorn bags are often coated with poisonous chemicals which may damage your kids’ health.
Questions:
14. What is one of the greatest concerns for today’s parents?
15. Why aren’t bluefish and swordfish suggested for kids?
16. Why is canned food bad for kids?

W: 65098821, 9 pm. Who’s calling again? Did you say your name is Tony?
