Question: First trip to the USA
For my new job, I will travel to the United States next month and meet my American boss. This will be my first trip there. I’m worried about correct business behavior and manners. My boss invited me to his home for dinner. Do you have any advice?

Re: First trip to the USA
It’s a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don’t be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it’s common in the USA.

Re: First trip to the USA
In Korea and Japan, it’s the custom to remove your shoes before entering a house. In the United States, you usually don’t take your shoes off. Once I was traveling in Japan and entered a house with my shoes on by mistake. Oops!

Re: First trip to the USA
Many Americans are very informal at home. One time I went to an American business partner’s home for dinner, I was surprised that everyone stood and talked in the kitchen while the husband and wife were cooking dinner. Besides, unlike in Korea, everyone took part in the dinner table conversation, even the man’s wife and children.

Do you like traveling? How can you make your trip interesting? Here’s some advice.
Read!
Before you leave, you should find some information about the place, such as its geography, history and people. You can introduce that place better by reading.
Take photos!
If you want to take some photos, remember to choose the most special sights. Don’t choose the sight you can see in other places. For example, Qingdao and Ningbo are coastal cities, so don’t only take photos of the sea. You should take photos of something else, too.
Taste!

While traveling, you’ll be taking money, license or passport. Or you will buy something expensive to take back home with you and you don’t want it to get stolen. Here are some ideas on how to keep your valuables safe while traveling.
Plan ahead of time
Think of what you really need and don’t need to take on your trip. Only take the valuables that you must have, not just ones that you would like to have.
Carry your valuables on your person
Something that is small, like cash and credit cards and your passport, can be carried in a money wallet around your neck or in a money belt. This way, your valuables are hidden and right next to you, and you know where they are at all times. Wear clothing that can hide the money belt.
Carry larger valuables in your carry-on bag.
If you can’t fit it in your money wallet like some large valuables, you’d better put them somewhere that you will keep touch with them. You can put them on the plane, so you don’t have to worry about the airline losing your bag or someone stealing it from the belt after the flight before you get to it.
Choose a hotel that has the front desk for valuables.
This way, you don’t have to worry about housekeeping getting hold of your valuables, or someone stealing your valuables if your room is broken into. If you give the valuables to the front desk to keep for you, choose a time when others are not looking.

In September 2013, the China National Tourism Administration(国家旅游局) issued a new set of tourist guideline in order to improve tourists' behavior when they travel abroad. Although the 64-page handbook contains suggestions for Chinese tourists when traveling at home, the main purpose is to improve the poor reputation of Chinese tourists abroad.
In 2013, more than 83 million Chinese people traveled overseas, up 18 percent from the year 2012, according to the China Tourism Academy. But even as they travel farther, the Chinese tourists continue to take bad habits with them. From damaging ancient Egyptian temples to letting children defecate(排便) in the middle of airports, Chinese tourists have earned a bad fame. Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Yang even stressed the need for Chinese tourists to behave better while traveling overseas so as to protect China's image abroad.
Now with the latest “guidebook”, Chinese travelers should have no excuse for rude behavior. According to the guidelines, when using the restroom, Chinese tourists are asked not to forget to flush the toilet after using it.
The guidelines also remind tourists of not fighting with others when they want to take pictures at tourist attractions. When flying, the guidelines advise travelers not to take life vests away from airplanes.
Chinese tourists are also encouraged to be respectful of local customs wherever they travel. In the United Kingdom, for example, it is not polite to ask people “Where are you going?” or “Have you eaten?” the handbook says.
Nevertheless, with a very short history of traveling overseas, it is not surprising that many Chinese tourists behave badly on their foreign trips. We should give them time to change.
