A
On my first day of high school, going into math class, I was pointed and laughed at by two of my classmates. I initially thought my fly was open, or that something was stuck in my teeth. But as I took my seat, I heard one student whisper, “Why is a black boy taking Honors?” So, my fly wasn’t open. An honors level class had simply been taken by a student whose skin was brown.
Many people think my clothes should be big enough for me to live in, or expect me to listen to only “black music.” In seventh grade, a group of my classmates fixed their cold stares on my clothes. They called out to me, “Go get your gangsta clothes.” In one of my Spanish classes, the teacher asked me, “Do you like rap music or rock music more?” I replied, “Rock.” The look of shock on my classmates’ faces made me uncomfortable.
Now I still take all Honors courses. I still wear clothes that fit me. My music library covers from rock to pop to techno, and almost everything in between. When it comes to choosing my friends, I am still colorblind. I continue to do my best to work in school in order to reach my goals; and yet, when I look in the mirror, I still see skin of that same brown.
I believe in being myself. I believe that I myself should decide who I am and what actions I take in life. In high school, popularity often depends on your willingness to follow trends. And I’ve been told that it doesn’t get much easier going into adulthood. But the only other option is to sacrifice my personality for the satisfaction and approval of others. This can be appealing, but I’m not going to do that.
21.Why did his classmates laugh at him?
A. His fly was open.
B. Something was stuck in his teeth.
C. He went into the wrong classroom.
D. They had prejudice against him.
22.What are black people usually believed to do?
A. Listen to rap music. B. Wear small clothes.
C. Take Honors courses. D. Attend Spanish classes.
23.What does the underlined word “colorblind” probably mean?
A. Making friends of the same skin color.
B. Having no idea what friends to make.
C. Treating people equally and fairly.
D. Feeling hurt and offended inside.
24.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Following Popular Trends B. Being Content with Myself
C. Having Faith in Skin Color D. Changing My Personality

A report released this month found that grouping children by ability is on the rise again— teaching students in groups of similar ability has improved achievement for fast and slow learners alike—and who wouldn’t want bright kids to be able to move ahead, or strugglers to get the help they need?
But for most kids, labels (标签) applied early in life tend to stick, even if they are wrong.
Sorting school children by ability has long been controversial. In some countries, especially in Asia, school-wide tracking (分流) remains normal. Children are tested and placed in different schools that direct them toward professional or vocational careers. Movement between the tracks is rare.
School-wide tracking decreased in U.S. schools in the 1960s and ’70s. It never died out, though. Sorting students into separate tracks for math at about junior high school age continues to be common, and other forms of tracking persist as well.
Unlike tracking, which means sorting students into separate classrooms, ability grouping happens within classrooms. When done according to the latest research, it has proven to promote achievement.
Ability grouping is changeable and temporary. Within classrooms, students might be divided into different learning groups dealing with materials of different levels. Any students who master concepts can move upward between groups, and the student groups might look different from subject to subject and unit to unit. For instance, a student who stands out in language arts might be at an average or slower level in math. A student who flies through multiplication tables might need extra help with fractions. Students who lag in reading can be pulled out of the classroom in small groups for practice with a tutor until their reading improves.
Research shows ability grouping within classes has more positive benefits than tracking. However, that must be weighed against the challenges involved. In many regular classrooms, the differences between student ability levels are very big. That presents challenges for teachers and low-performing students to constantly compare themselves with students who seem to fly through school with ease.
The rigid ability groups and tracking of the past are still with us in many schools. Likely, labels are applied with more caution than in the bad old days when some teachers gave reading groups not-so-secret code names like “Bluebirds”, “Robins”, “Crows” and “Buzzards”. But kids still know.
28.Why is grouping children by ability becoming popular again?
A. Because most teachers do not like slower learners.
B. Because grouping children should be done early in life.
C. Because it is academically beneficial to different learners.
D. Because fast learners can move ahead without teachers’ help.
29.By saying “Movement between the tracks is rare.” (Para 3), the writer really means______.
A. tracking children is normal in Asia
B. school-wide tracking has decreased in US
C. professional and vocational careers are unrelated
D. sorted students can hardly change schools
30.The examples in Paragraph 6 are used mainly to illustrate ______.
A. a good language learner promises to be good at maths
B. a student might join different groups for different courses
C. ability grouping benefits gifted students more than slow ones
D. ability grouping presents no challenge for those slow students
31.What might be the challenge in regular classrooms for teachers?
A. Students’ different levels.
B. Students’ low performance.
C. Constant self-comparison.
D. Application of not-so-secret code.

Food serves as a form of communication in two fundamental ways. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a specific meaning, and play a significant role in a family or culture's celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat and when and how we eat them--are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between rural and urban areas within one country.
Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cakes were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition has its roots in the custom of sharing bread.
Foods also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, pieces of corn bread represent blocks of gold for prosperity in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which signifies success in the New Year for the person who receives it.
Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and welcome their child in a celebration that includes giving red-colored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to represent family unity.
Nutrition is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world.
32.According to the passage, sharing bread
A. can help to develop unity
B. indicates a lack of food
C. is a custom unique to rural areas
D. has its roots in birthday celebrations
33.What does the coin in vasilopita signify for its receiver in the New Year?
A. Trust. B. Togetherness
C. Health. D. Success
34.The author explains the role of food in celebrations by

C. analyzing causes D. describing processes
35.What is the passage mainly about?

Dear Tom,
Delighted to receive your letter. And I’m writing to tell you something about Chinese high school students’ physical exercise.
With the increasing pressure from the national college entrance exam, more and more students have to sacrifice the time for sports to prepare for the exam, which is so important for their future development. They only have one P.E. class a week, obviously not enough. Actually, most of the students are eager to take part in sports, but they are so occupied with their study.
In my view, important though it is for them to have a better performance in the exam, health is equally important. Without a strong body, we would achieve nothing in our life. I hope all students can reorganize their timetable and try to build up their body.
Yours,
Li Hua
