1.Who is in control of your life? Who is pulling your strings? For the majority of us, it’s other people – society, colleagues, friends, or our family. We learned this way of operating when we were very young, of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us. As Oscar Wilde puts it, “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry (模仿), their passions a quotation.”
When people tell us how wonderful we are, it makes us feel good. We long for this good feeling like a drug – we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore, we are so eager for the approval of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to. Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their drug, we worsen our own existence to get our own constant drug of approval.?
But, just as with any drug, there is a price to pay. The price of the approval drug is freedom – the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think. Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change their opinions all the time. Moreover, people have their own business, and in the end, they’re more interested in themselves than in you. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.
So how can we take back control? I think there's only one way -- make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values -- not values imposed (强加) from the outside by others, but values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others, we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.

It is common that our life is controlled by other people around us. That’s because we attach great importance to being approved of by them. Sadly, their recognition costs us our freedom to be who we are, whereas their changeable and uninterested thoughts are uncontrollable. However, we can still be our own masters by ignoring opinions of others and sticking to our inner values, thus making our life cheerful and meaningful.
2.Parents everywhere praise their kids. Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Kids, says, “We’ve gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more strict.” By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they’re building their children’s confidence, when, in fact, it may be just the opposite. Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that's insincere, make kids afraid to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents’ praise has put them.
Still, don’t go too far in the other direction. Not giving enough praise can be just as damaging as giving too much. Kids will feel like they’re not good enough or that you don’t care and, as a result, may see no point in trying hard for their accomplishments.
So what is the right amount of praise? Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the quantity. If praise is sincere and focused on the effort not the outcome, you can give it as often as your child does something that deserves a verbal reward. “We should especially recognize our children’s efforts to push themselves and work hard to achieve a goal,” says Donahue, author of Parenting Without Fear: Letting Go of Worry and Focusing on What Really Matters. “One thing to remember is that it’s the process not the end product that matters.”
Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team. But if he’s out there every day and playing hard, you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses. Praising the effort and not the outcome can also mean recognizing your child when she has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or finish a book report. But whatever it is, praise should be given on a case-by-case basis and be proportionate (相称的)to the amount of effort your child has put into it.

Excessive or insincere praise, though supposed to build kids' confidence, ?can actually turn them into withering violets. In like manner, insufficient praise also impairs kids' confidence, self-esteem, and even motivation. Therefore, a sincere, fact-based and effort-oriented compliment is superior to one that merely focuses on the outcomes. So recognize your child by praising his efforts even if he/ she is just ordinary.? He/she deserves it.

“Helicopter parents” is a description of parents who are hovering over their children in a state of extreme concern. They always show up to solve their children’s problems, protect them from real or imagined harm, resolve stressful situation, offer advice and get them out of trouble, even if they misbehaved. Although out of love and concern, it can have harmful effect on their children’s emotional development and future autonomy.
Children learn through their mistakes. But if you intervene (介入) at first sign of struggle and finish your child’s homework, he’ll miss out on valuable learning opportunities. You’re sending him the message that he needs to be perfect and failure is not an option, otherwise you wouldn’t always take over for him.
By constantly rescuing your child from stressful situation, you’re sending him a message that you don’t believe he’s capable of taking care of himself. Children develop self-esteem by learning how to complete challenge on their own. If you are always intervening, he’s denied this vital stage in his growth. As a result, your child may lack the confidence necessary to do well in school, pursue hobbies and interests, and develop friendships.
If you’re always taking care of everything for your child, it’ll be more difficult for him to become independent. As an adult, he might find it hard to take care of himself, because he’s never developed coping skills to deal with life’s challenges. He might suffer from irrational fears, anxiety and depression, which could lead him to drop out of college or frequently change jobs, according to Dr. Michele Borba. Instead of developing healthy relationships, he might seek a partner who will take care of him or controlling, as his parents were.
You can help your child become more independent by allowing him to complete tasks and challenges on his own without your intervention. Even if he fails at first, don’t interfere---encourage him to start again. Show that you have faith in his abilities to succeed without your help. Allow him to learn natural consequences. Even small things can help him become more independent---making his own bed, preparing his own lunch, shopping for his own clothes and doing homework without your help.

“Helicopter parents”, parents getting deeply involved in children’s life, actually do big harm to children’s growth.(要点1)Under over-protection, children miss the lessons taught by failures and mistakes, fail to build up their self-confidence and become weak in competence and emotions, which consequently makes it hard for them to face real life challenges.(要点2)Therefore, parents should learn to let go and encourage children to be independent, staring from small things. 4.Workaholics(工作狂) live for their work, often spending many extra hours at work, and often taking work home to complete. It is fine to live in a work-hard culture, but when work becomes the only reason for a person's existence above more important things (such as family and friends), the issue becomes critical. That’s the problem more and more Americans are faced with.
Americans are working more hours per week than in years past, and with many companies reducing employees, more and more workers are worried about their own jobs. Some studies show that as many as 40 percent of American workers don't even bother to take vacations, partly because of fears they may not have a job to come back to if they do. Besides, it’s obvious that part of the matter is financial. More and more people begin to define success in terms of financial measures. The higher one’s income is, the more respect one gets. Finally, people nowadays live and work in a connected environment -- e-mails, instant messaging, fax machines, and cell phones -- making it hard for them to truly get time away from their work, even when they are on holiday.
When work becomes the only reason for being -- when it becomes the only thing people think about, the only thing that truly makes people happy, many Americans find that they are no longer close to their kids. Divorce rate jumps and serious stress-related health problems come up. Undoubtedly, it is time to do something.
To reduce workaholism, you must stay away from work once in a while. There are many ways to do that: spend time with family and friends; call home often to stay connected; learn to say no to new assignments; consider exercises to get your body back to a healthy shape; fight the urge that everything you do must be perfect. It will take some effort, but for yourself and those you love, you really make the effort. Have a try and you won’t regret it.

An increasing number of Americans are becoming workaholics. They work extra hours every week to maintain their jobs and become financially successful. Even on holiday, modern communication technologies always connect them to work. Consequently, workaholism breaks up their families and damages their health. Luckily, there is a lot one can do to make time away from work though it takes some effort, but anyway, it's worthwhile to have a try.
5. ?Change is an unavoidable part of everyday life, It happens as time passes or as a consequence of one's decision. Changes may be positive or negative depending on how we understand them.
? ? ?Whereas some people are happy to live a life of routine, others accept change and prefer a challenging world where events are unpredictable.
From one point of view, people who accept changes think that changes make their life meaningful. Firstly, changes create new opportunities, which make us leap forward. A new job, for instance, might present challenges that push the person to adapt, acquire new knowledge, or add to their skill set. Secondly, a change can represent a break with the past and an old routine which has become boring and predictable. Finally, as well as making life more fun and interesting, new experiences can be good for our physical and mental health. We find that changes can make us experienced and valuable.
? ? On the other hand, people who don’t want to step outside their comfort zone prefer following their daily habits. They feel satisfied with their circumstances. Perhaps they feel that a routine gives them structure, maybe they are not fond of surprises or confident enough to face new challenges. They believe that staying secure and maintaining the present circumstances is the best way to live life safer. Such people have set times for performing certain functions and do things in the same way all the time. They fear the uncertainty of the unknown and may associate change with negative outcomes. For example, transition in position or status gives people worries as to whether they can manage a new task
Both sides seem to have their own advantages. However, I personally think change is necessary if someone wants to keep up with the fast pace of modern life. Even if some people maintain a form of stability by following a routine, the world keeps spinning and evolving.Without change there would be no life at all. Our lives are actually fueled by change and seeing change as natural and unavoidable will bring us considerable stress relief.

Given the lack of fit between gifted students and their school,it is not surprising that such students often have little good to say about their school experience. In one study of 400 adults who had achieved distinction in all areas of life, researchers found that three-fifths of these individuals either did badly in school or were unhappy in school. Pablo Picasso,Charles Darwin,Mark Twain,Oliver Gold Smith, and William Butler Yeats all disliked school. So did Winston Churchill, who almost failed out of Harrow,an elite British school. About Oliver Goldsmith, one of his teachers remarked, “Never was so dull a body.” Often these children realize that they know more than their teachers, and their teachers often feel that these children are arrogant, inattentive,or unmotivated.
Some of these gifted people may have done poorly in school because their gifts were not scholastic. Maybe we can account for Picasso in this way. But most fared poorly in school not because they lacked ability but because they found school unchallenging and consequently lost interest. Yeats described the lack of fit between his mind and school:“because I had found it difficult to attend to anything less interesting than my own thoughts,I was difficult to teach.” As noted earlier, gifted children of all kinds tend to be strong–willed nonconformists. Nonconformity and stubbornness(and Yeats’s level of arrogance and self-absorption)are likely to lead to conflicts with teachers.
When highly gifted students in any domain talk about what was important to the development of their abilities, they are far more likely to mention their families than their schools or teachers. A writing prodigy studied by David Feldman and Lynn Goldsmith was taught far more about writing by his journalist father than his English teacher. High-IQ children,in Australia studied by Miraca Gross had much more positive feelings about their families than their schools. About half of the mathematicians studied by Benjamin Bloom had little good to say about school.

?It’s a familiar but uncomfortable feeling. Your best friend will marry a handsome doctor, and the congratulatory hug you offer lacks genuine warmth. Your friend is made the team for Saturday’s big game, and you take a certain pleasure in telling him you can’t be there to watch him play. You smile but a voice in your head asks, why them and not you?
Envy is a shortcoming of character we like to keep in our heart secretly. How shameful is it not to be looking forward with delight to your day as your best friend's bridesmaid! Who would hope your friend might suffer some injury, so you can take his place on the team?
Envy is everywhere. It seems to be in our nature to hate others' gifts and good fortune, especially if we see them as advantages they shouldn't have.
?Envy raises its ugly head when we focus on what we want but we don’t possess now. Worse still, we may even wish for and take pleasure in someone's losing what we have always desired. When you compare yourself and your life unfavorably with your friend or your colleague, you can only keep your darker emotions.?
So is there a solution? Is there anything you can do to get rid of? this most ungenerous emotion?
?Well, why not make envy the motivation you need for self-improvement? The best weapon against envy is not to compete where you can’t shine, but to do your absolute best where you can.
Start by making peace with yourself, and accept the gifts which make you unique. Make a n agreement with yourself to be the best you can be. Then find the qualities in others that cause your envy. Is it someone’s singing voice, their work promotion, their new car? Envy shows us the things we’d like to have. So, make a plan to earn what's important to you.
? And aim for genuine pleasure in the achievements and good fortune of others. Cheer on your friend when he scores that goal. Enjoy your best friend’s wedding day. Then go out and do something special, and make yourself wonderfully proud of you.

Something happens to many children when they are out of school over the summer months. It is called the "summer slide". This may sound like a ride at a water park. But it's not. Summer slide is when children forget much ofwhat they learnedduring the latest school year.
To fight the effects of summer slide, teachers often give students homework over the summer. Many parents may send children to all kinds of camps or find other activities to keep them learning. Some even try to build up their children's strengths by getting them into extra tutoring.
However, experts say keeping children busy all the time is not good for them. The result is often a tired child with an overcrowded schedule. This keeps a child's brain active constantly-learning, gathering information and preparing for the next event. And this may have the opposite effect the parents are not hoping for.
What should parents do instead? Nothing. According to Lea Waters, apsychologist specializing in positive psychology and positive education, slowing down actually helps children become the best they can be. Machines need to be reset, while kids need to goof off(偷懒). She says that goofing off? really allows kids to have some downtime, when they are not focused on a specific task but arefree to do something that they're interested in doing and that they can do more automatically and get enjoyment from, like shooting baskets or listening to the music.
She also adds that goofing off does not mean the brain isn't working It just goes into this default network mode(默认网络模式)and uses that time to process all the information it had during the day, to integrate(整合)new information. It makes a kind of decision about what information to put into memory and what to get rid of,which in fact helps to improve memory.

You might think that whether you choose a blue shirt or a yellow one to wear to work or college makes no difference to your day and those around you. However, an increasing number of experts argue that the colors we choose affect our mood, our career prospects(前景)and even our health.?
The power of color has been used for centuries and we should be making the most of it in our daily lives. Color affects us to a greater degree than most of us realize. Color is used increasingly by psychologists and therapists for influencing mood and state of mind, and for various types of treatments when we are ill. Some people even believe that the blind can benefit from the "vibrations"(震动)that color gives off.
Companies use color to some effect to encourage us to buy their products. For example, purple is seen as creative and mixes well with red, to? show that a company has ideas and the power to make them happen. Orange and blue are also recommended colors for companies to use, because orange is the color of communication and blue suggests safety and security. So this could be a particularly good combination. Companies have found that certain colors "speak" to specific age groups. They often use red to attract younger people to their products, for example, as it is vibrant and more youthful than colors like gold and navy, which older customers seem to prefer.
Wearing different colors can affect how you feel and how others react to you, so it is important to consider this when deciding what to wear in the morning. If you want people to take you seriously, then wearing navy or black is good. Blue would also be helpful for an interview or oral examination because it relaxes you and makes you feel calm. Red gets you noticed by everyone and makes you feel energetic, but be careful, as it can raise your pulse rate and not everyone wants this effect.
So think carefully before you leave the house. The colors you choose are a powerful tool. Are you making the right impression— on yourself and on others?

Surfing the Net when you should be finishing a work report, changing clothes when you have a train to catch, or perhaps even lying in bed when you've promised yourself you'll work out. Sound familiar? You aren't alone. We all procrastinate (拖延) sometimes, especially when it comes to things we aren't really fond of.
A study showed that we spend about 218 minutes procrastinating every day, which amounts to 55 days of lost time each year. We might not think these figures particularly worthy of worry, but when we look at the overall impact of procrastination on our lives, it's a different story. Not only does this cost financial loss, it also affects peace of mind. In general, people who continually put things off are unhappier, as well as being less wealthy and healthy.?
So why do we do it? "When we avoid taking action, We're really avoiding pain," explains psychiatrist (精神病学家) Phil Stutz. For most of us, pain avoidance isn't limited to one situation. It applies to almost anything that's painful. Most of us try our best never to leave a comfort zone. That's why we sacrifice something much more valuable: time. "Our time on earth is limited," Stutz adds. "Every moment is an opportunity we'll never have again. Procrastinators act as if they have all the time in the world. But deep down, they know they're wasting parts of their life. The trouble is, most of them don't know how to free themselves."
One way he says we rid procrastination is by overcoming the pain of avoidance using daily visualization (想象). "Picture the pain you're avoiding as a black cloud in front of you," Stutz says. "Notice how you're tired of the ways this pain has held you back in life, and tell yourself that you're determined to conquer it. Then it's time to get through the cloud and to the other side--where you're free." Experts insist: Procrastinators can change their behavior, it takes a lot of self-work but in the end, It's worth the effort. And start today, not tomorrow.?

Although some people don't like using automatic hand dryers in restrooms, It may actually be argued that motion-sensing(动作感应)hand dryers are a practical alternative to paper towels(纸巾). I believe that our school would benefit from investing in automatic hand dryers in all the restrooms.
First of all, the automatic hand dryer Is very sanitary(卫生的). Instead of pulling on a lever(手柄) touched by a large number of students, users can just stick their hands under the air dryer. No bacteria can get on them because there is nothing to touch.
In addition, if the school buys automatic hand dryers, we can save money. There is a terrible waste of paper towels in the restrooms. Students continuously pull on the lever for unneeded towels until the dispensers(自动售货机) are empty. An automatic hand dryer costs about $ 500, with very little additional cost over time while paper towels can cost $ 25 a case, or about $ 500 a year. After just one year, it would pay for itself.
Finally, our bathroom is a paper towel mess! There are always piles of paper towels on the floor. Sometimes the extras fall from the dispenser unused. Many times kids make their used towel into a ball and aim for a basket. But if they miss the target, the paper ball stays on the floor. Paper towels leave so much litter in the restrooms that the restrooms are a mess.?
People use the hand dryers for just a few seconds, and they think that automatic hand dryers don't dry their hands as thoroughly as paper towels. However, studies have shown that when people dry their hands for at least 30 seconds, automatic dryers actually dry much better than paper towels. It is difficult to get every part of your hand dry using paper towels, but the air can if you take a few extra seconds.
As you see there are some good points, let's install automatic hand dryers as soon as possible.

Advertising plays a major role in the competitive business world. Many industries take advantage of the power of advertising to attract or to win customers away from their business competitors. The influence of advertising is so huge that it causes many people to buy things that they don't want at the start.
Advertising encourages people to buy things they don't want through misleading ideas. Advertising is proven to be a successful tool to stress the features of their product to the public even though it's regarded undesirable such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohols and so on. For example, Dunhill, a cigarette company which sponsors many football teams, seems to be promoting cigarettes to the public. Without the sponsorship(资助), the company will be less known to the public, resulting in fewer sales of cigarettes.
Besides that, advertising has a large influence on the decisions made by the people in their everyday life. Many businesses use advertising as a form of promoting to create awareness about their product in the market. For instance, in a fast food industry, the introduction of a new flavor of burger needs advertising to reach the public while the other burgers require advertising to increase sales. Children, especially, are easily influenced by advertisements and will have the desire to dine at fast food restaurants after that. Although fast food is bad for health, it has successfully become appealing to the pubic through advertising.
However, advertising plays a part in helping customers to compare a product in terms of price, quality, reliability and so on. Without advertising, it will be very difficult for customers to judge the worthiness of a product. For example, advertisements published by various companies have given the customers the opportunity to choose wisely when purchasing an item. Without the power of advertising, customers will be stuck to a brand which may not offer the best choice.?

With limited space for parks and gardens, architects and city planners often find it challenging to include greenery in neighborhoods in cities. One creative solution is to grow plants on unused areas like walls and rooftops. It's a popular idea, and now rooftop gardens and green walls have been sprouting up (大量冒出) in cities around the world.
There are many benefits of having green spaces to the urban landscape. Adding gardens to rooftops or walls can create a pleasant environment—what was once a gray cement(水泥) wall can become a colorful, blooming garden. The Caxiaforum art gallery in Madrid, Spain, is a famous example—one of its walls is covered with 15,000 plants from over 250 different species. In other cities, green walls are being used more functionally, to cover up construction sites and empty buildings and to decorate the lobbies of office buildings.
Using plants to cover walls and rooftops can also keep cities cooler in the summer. Buildings and roads absorb the sun's heat and hold it, causing a building or neighborhood to stay warmer longer. Plants, on the other hand, provide an enormous amount of shade. There is evidence that growing a roof or wall garden can lower a building's energy costs.
In New York City, public schools plant rooftop gardens that can reduce heating and cooling costs. In addition to saving the school money, teachers and parents love the gardens because of their educational value —it's a fun and healthy way for their kids to investigate the world around them. "For the children, it's exciting when you grow something edible (可食用的)," said Lauren Fontana, principal of a New York public school.
