Charles Dickens was born in 1812. As the second child of his parents,Dickens’s childhood was very difficult, and it was mentioned indirectly in his work. Dickens’s second novel, Oliver Twist, follows the fortunes of the adrift (漂泊无依的)life.
At the age of 12, Dickens began to work at Warrens Blacking Warehouse. The money he made was not enough to keep his father out of debtors’ prison.
Young Dickens was later sent back to school at Wellington House Academy in London. Three years later, because of his father’s financial problems, Dickens ended his formal education for good and took a job as a legal clerk. This job led to court reporting, journalism, and eventually fiction writing. Dickens became a famous author by the age of 24.
Many of the incidents of Dickens’s miserable boyhood are described in David Copperfield, his most autobiographical novel (自传体小说).Little Dorrit also draws upon his early years. In that book, Amy Dorrit cares for her father in debtors’ prison.
Unhappy things in childhood can have a deep effect on someone over a lifetime, but Dickens seems to have buried them through his writing. In middle age he reconnected with Maria Beadnell, his first love, only to be disappointed by how she had changed. He referred to Beadnell with a mixture of satire (讽刺)and charm in the character Flora Finching in LiuleDorrit, who has the same connection with the novel’s hero, Arthur Clennam.

A company has started up a new app that is regarded as “the world’s first global search engine for clean drinking water”. It’s called “Tap”. The system provides people with a way to easily fill their reusable water bottles.
The app Works with the GPS locator (定位器) on your phone to find the nearby water bottle refill stations or “water ATMs”. The local results will emerge on a map, just as if you were searching for the nearest coffee shop or gas station. Now, the Tap system has already listed more than 34,000 cafes and restaurants in 30 countries. Those cafes and restaurants that provide water will show a Tap sign on their doors or windows.
Tap CEO Samuel Rosen said that the app was made to create a map of “millions” of water sources. Although Rosen hasn’t offered information about how Tap will make money, making a map of water sources is very important. One effect of the Tap system is to direct foot traffic to the nearby restaurants or coffee shops. It also creates chances for advertising both within the app and at the refill stations.
The system is easy to use. You can connect Tap to your smart phone, and then Tap will make a local street map. However, sometimes the system may make you unhappy. Once when I tried to locate the nearest “water ATMs” to my home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Tap directed me to a cafe in Newark, New Jersey. But that was just an accident. When I restarted the app, it showed me several places within walking distance, including our local bike shop.

My favorite book
My favorite book is Robinson Crusoe. It was written by Daniel Defoe. He was an English writer.
The book is mainly about Robinson’s life on the lonely island. He explores on the sea and is taken to an island because of a terrible storm. On the island, he makes things with his hands and brain. And he saves a native called Friday. They live together until they are found by others. Finally, he leaves the island and returns to his hometown.
It’s amazing to read Robinson’s life on the island. The book teaches me that we should face difficulties bravely and challenge ourselves all the time.
