I was in a strange city, besides I could not speak a word of the language. After having spent my first day in the town center, I decided to lose my way(闲逛)on my second day, since I believed that this was the surest way of getting to know the strange city.
I rode on a bus for several stops, then got off it and walked on. The first two hours passed pleasantly enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. I wanted to ask the way. But the trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street my hotel was in.
I stopped to ask a newspaper-seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. The next person I asked was a policeman. The policeman listened to me carefully. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I nodded politely and began walking in the direction he pointed.
About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green fields were seen on either side of me. I knew the only thing left for me to do was to find the nearest railway station.

The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have a dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plate as soon as I have emptied it. That always discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate.
I have also noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he often refuses the offer of food or drink though he’s in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it’s not in the West at all.
In the United States, it’s impossible to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking if they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say “No, thanks”. When an American is served with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some orange juice if you have it.” That is what an American will do.
So when you go to the United States, you’d better remember the famous thing: “When in Rome, do as Romans do.”
55. When a Chinese host kept putting more food onto the plate, the writer felt .
A. happy?? B. sad?? C. uncomfortable D. angry???
56. A Chinese often refuses the offer of food or drink at a dinner party because .

C. he is afraid that others will laugh at him D. he thinks it’s polite to do that
57. A guest at an American dinner party should show his politeness by .
A. asking for things directly if he wants them
B. putting more food onto his plate as soon as he emptied it
C. refusing the offer of food or drink though he is still hungry or thirsty
D. not eating up all the food offered
58. “When in Rome, do as Romans do” means “ ”.
A. The Romans are people of good manners
B. You should get used to the local customs wherever you go
C. Americans always do the same things as the Romans do
D. You should learn to do as Romans when in Rome
C
Have you been asked for money by some disabled beggars(乞丐)while you’re enjoying shopping? Do you have any pity on them who are so poor and lonely or do you just feel afraid of their terrible shapes? As one of the most special groups, disabled people’s living conditions—not only their material(物质的)conditions, but their mental(精神的)world, really need improvement.
The treatment for disabled people should go like this: First, don’t look down upon them. Don’t be afraid of looking at the terrible shapes of the disabled. Try to treat them equally. Because they are a part of the society(社会), we can’t discard(抛弃)them. The second is to help them as much as we could. If you can be a volunteer and do some work for the disabled people, that would be very nice. That does help not only to the disabled people but also to yourself because you will feel good after your kind action.
If every one of us gives a little love, the world will become a beautiful wonderland!

Less pressure makes better life
Hello, everyone!
Pressure is a serious problem in today’s world. Most students in our class are under too much pressure. Some students can’t get on well with their classmates, while others may worry about their exams. I used to be under pressure, too. My parents wanted me to be the top student in school. They didn’t allow me to watch TV or play outside. On weekends they sent me to all kinds of classes. One day I had a talk with my parents and told them I had done my best. Finally they understood me. In this way, I feel less stressed so that I can concentrate more on my studies.
I think less pressure makes better life. Thank you.
