9B Unit 5 A story by Mark Twain
Fill in the blanks with proper words. The first letter is given.
Jenny wanted to encourage students to read more famous books, and so she decided to include in the school newspaper this funny story from a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.
Tom Sawyer Paints the Fence
Saturday morning came and everything was bright and fresh. Every boy in town was happy, e 1 Tom Sawyer.
Tom stood on the sidewalk with a bucket of white paint and a brush with a long handle in his hands. He looked at the fence that his aunt had told him to paint, and felt very d 2 . It was thirty yards long and three yards high! He dipped his brush in the paint and painted a corner of the fence. Then he
stood back and looked at it. The section he had painted was so small, and the u 3 section was so huge! He sat down under a tree to have a rest.
He began to think of the games which he had planned for this day. Soon the boys who were free would come along and make fun of him. But just then, he had a wonderful idea. He picked up his brush and went b 4 to work.
Ben Rogers came along the road, singing happily and carrying an apple. He stopped and looked at Tom. Tom went on painting and ignored Ben.
“I'm going swimming,” said Ben. “Do you want to go swimming, Tom? But I g 5 you can't.
You have to stay and work, don't you?”
Tom went on painting. “Work?” he said. “This isn't work. I'm enjoying myself. Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence like this every day?”
Ben thought about this. Tom went on painting, carefully. Sometimes he stopped and stood back to look at the fence, and then added a bit more paint in just the right place. Ben was watching every move. He was getting more and more interested.
After a while he said, “Tom, will you let me do some painting?”

Tom thought about it, and said, “No, Ben, I can't. You see, Aunt Polly wants it to be done properly. I'm the o 6 one who can do it right.
“Oh, please, Tom,” begged Ben. “I can do it. I'll be really careful. Just let me try. I'll give you half of my apple. I'll give you all of it!”
“Well, all right, Ben,” said Tom. “But you must be careful.”
He gave Ben his brush with w 7 on his face but joy in his heart. He sat down a 8 under the tree, and started to eat the apple that Ben had given him.
All day, boys came to make fun, but they ended up staying to paint. When Ben got tired, Billy Fisher was waiting. He gave Tom a kite for a chance to paint. Then Johnny Miller offered him twelve marbles, and so on.
By late afternoon Tom had gained all sorts of toys, and the fence had gained three coats of paint. Later Aunt Polly came to look at Tom's work. She was so pleased when she saw the painted fence that she gave Tom a large cake!

A. Answer the questions(根据以下内容回答问题)
Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois. His father was a doctor. His mother was a singer who had given up her career to marry. When Hemingway was young, the family owned a house on a lake where they spent the summers. Hemingway learned to hunt, fish and camp in the woods and lakes. And he was soon able to shoot, fish, and swim very well. He entered first grade a year younger than usual, so he had to work hard to keep up with his older classmates. Ernest read a great deal. He especially liked adventure stories and science. He learned to play the cello(大提琴) so he could take part in family concerts.
In high school he got straight A's, edited the school paper, and played in the orchestra(管弦乐队). Some of
his stories were printed in the school annual(年报).
After graduating from high school in 1917, Hemingway got a job as a reporter for the Kansas City Star, a newspaper. During World War I, Hemingway, at the age of 19, volunteered to become an ambulance
driver for the Red Cross in Italy. He got wounded in a battle and was sent to a hospital in Milan. He fell in love with Agnes, a Red Cross nurse seven years older than he. They planned to marry; however, Agnes married someone else in 1919.
Later, Hemingway began writing and travelling around the world. In 1925, his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, came out. It is widely considered his best work. Four years later, he wrote A Farewell to Arms, a sad love story of an American soldier and a British nurse. The plot( 情 节 ) was inspired by his earlier relationship with Agnes in Milan. In 1939, Hemingway moved to Cuba. He wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls the same year. In 1952, his last novel, The Old Man and the Sea was published; it made Hemingway famous and gained him the Pulitzer Prize in 1952 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

Although fishing isn’t allowed in Maine in this season, I’ve got two hundred pounds of beautiful fish with my luggage in this train. I like to eat fish, so I packed it in ice to take it home with me. May I ask who you are, sir?”
The stranger looked at Mark Twain for several seconds and then answered, “I’m a police officer. My job is to catch people who hunt and fish during the wrong seasons. E. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题):(12 分)

I once found out that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl next to me whispered something, but I didn't quite catch it. So I leaned over her way and found out she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed. As soon as we were alone, she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up, and how important it was to stand on your own feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honest and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promised that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on, I found out that she thought I had done some cheating in the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answer from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.
1. Did the story take place in an exam room or in the teachers’ office?

2. Why did the girl want to borrow a pen?

3. What did the teacher ask the boy to do when the test was over?

4. Why do you think the teacher emphasized honesty in her talk to the boy?
