During the first week of the term, every boy and girl was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year. The teacher would give the best job to the most responsible child during the previous year. Rita was a kind and quiet girl, and she performed perfectly. All the children knew that Rita was the favorite to be given the best job of all: to look after the class dog. But that year there was a big surprise. Rita was given a little box with some sand and one ant. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her.
“I will turn this little task into something great,” Rita said to herself. So Rita started learning about ant, and gave the ant the very best food, and it ended up growing bigger.
One day, the teacher introduced Doctor Smith, who chose Rita to be his assistant because she had best care for the little ant. He thanked Rita for having been so patient and responsible. Children learned that you have to know how to be responsible even with the smallest tasks.
