Step 1 Lead in
1. Look at the pictures carefully first in Activity 1. And then answer the questions.
(1) Have you ever read any of these books? What are they about?
Have you ever seen the movies or TV plays based on these books? What do you think of them?
2. Pay attention to some information about books:
Dream of the Red Chamber Dream of the Red Chamber, also called The Story of the Stone, written by Cao Xueqin, is one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. It was written during the Qing Dynasty. The novel is generally considered to be the greatest of all Chinese novels and among the greatest in world literature. Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes is a fictional consulting detective in London created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes is known for his proficiency with observation, forensic science, and logical reasoning. Together with his assistant, Dr John H. Watson, he pursues criminals throughout London, the south of England, and continental Europe.
Rickshaw Boy Written by Lao She, Rickshaw Boy is considered by many to be one of the masterpieces of modern Chinese literature. It describes the difficult life of a rickshaw puller during the years of warlord turmoil. This book is famous for its vivid descriptions of life in the city of Beijing in the beginning of the 20th century. Moment in Peking Moment in Peking is a novel originally written in English by Chinese author Lin Yutang. The novel covers the turbulent events in China from1900 to 1938, and it focuses on the lives of several different families and people, along with their interactions during that time.
Step 2 Reading
1. Scan the passage and find out which of the books in Activity 1 are mentioned.
2. Read the passage again and pay attention to the language points in the passage:
(1) All too often, great words end up being turned into cinematic “turkeys”.
If you go on like this, you’ll end up in prison.
I ended up doing all the work myself.
If he carries on driving like that, he’ll end up dead.
(2) Movies of course need impressive images, so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies best described as “interesting”?
impressive意为“令人印象深刻的”;result in意为“导致,造成”,同义短语为lead to;本句句尾的best described as “interesting” 为过去分词短语作后置定语。
(3)This is something that even the highly successful Harry Potter movies can’t escape from with fans of the books disappointed not to see some of their favourite characters in the movie versions. 主干成分为this is something + that引导的定语从句+with的复合结构。 此处with的复合结构为:with+宾语+形容词+not to do。
(4)Perhaps, one day, readers of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most admired work will find themselves glued to their screens by episodes of The Great Gatsby.
be glued to sth意为“盯着某物看”。
Step 3 Activity 3
Match the author’s opinions about the movie adaptations to the examples from the passage.
口1 Some parts of the story and some characters are missing in the movie.
口2 The visual images are not as striking as the descriptions in the book.
口3 The movie is not as great as the book.
口4 The movie doesn’t look the way we visualised while reading the book.
口5 The characters do not stand out.
Step 4 Think and share
1. What does the saying “There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes” mean? Do you know of any similar sayings in Chinese?
2. What books would you like to see made into movies? Why?
3. What other reasons do you think make movie adaptations less satisfactory than the original books?
Step 5 Group work
Work in groups. Give a talk about a movie adapted from a book.
1. Use the notes to help plan your talk.
Title of the book:
Your point of view (successful/disappointing):

Answer:
2. Pay attention to the language points during reading.
(1)Dating back to the 18th century, Peking Opera has over two hundred years of history. 重点讲解date back to的用法。date back to与date from意思相近,意为“始于(过去某个时候);追溯到”。
例如:The college dates back to medieval times.
(2)At first, I thought what I heard was a violin, but later I learnt that it was an instrument with two strings called jinghu.
Nobody knows what will happen next.
I spent what little time I had with my family.
a girl with (=who has) red hair(一位红发女孩)
a jacket with a hood(一件带风帽的短上衣)
He looked at her with a hurt expression.(他用一副受伤的神情看着她。)
(3)Using such techniques, the opera had transformed a small stage into the whole universe. To transform hills into fields is an extremely tough job.(改山造田是一项极为艰苦的工作。)
(4)It was so dazzling and energetic that I wasn't sure if the characters were performers or athletes!
本句中dazzling意为very impressive and attractive。 The activity has been so organized that none of the participants complains.(这次活动做了精心安排,因此每位参与者都没有怨言。)
(5)So, if you want to see a show that combines music, singing, drama, poetry and costume design with explosive effect, The Revenge of Prince Zidan ticks all the right boxes!
combine...with...
The hotel combines comfort with convenience.(这家旅馆既舒适又方便。)
This model combines a telephone and fax machine.(这种型号同时具备电话机和传真机的功能。)
tick all the right boxes意为“事情发展如人所愿,一切顺利”。
3. Activity 3
Choose the author’s purpose in writing the passage in Activity 3.
(1) To prove that Peking Opera is a better way to perform Hamlet.
(2) To inform the readers how to perform Hamlet through Peking Opera.
(3) To share the unique experience of seeing a Peking Opera version of Hamlet.
(4) To make a comparison between Eastern and Western cultures.
4. Activity 4
(1) Complete the chart with expressions from the passage.
(2) Then try to retell the passage in groups according to the chart.
