在上一单元,我们学习了什么是定语从句,定语从句的关系代词有哪些,关系代词的功能是什么以及如何选择关系代词等内容。事实上,定语从句的关系词除了关系代词,还有一类,我们称之为关系副词,包括when, where, why三个。与关系代词类似,关系副词的功能同样有三:指代先行词,引导定语从句,在定语从句中担任成分。区别在于,关系代词在定语从句中的成份为主语,宾语或定语;而关系副词则在从句中作状语。其中,when担任时间状语,where担任地点状语,而why担任原因状语。试比较以下三组句子:
