短文简介:本文的关键词是“阅读”。文章讲述了David在暑假帮助家人去图书馆还书时被锁在里面而发生的故事。有趣的是,因为这件事他从讨厌阅读变得爱上了阅读。
David walked down the street. All he wanted to do was to play basketball with Jim. But his mother told him to return his sister's books to the library on his way to Jim's house.
In his eyes, books and summertime just don't go together. He thought he had read a lot during the school year. And he had never set foot inside a public library. Today he'd just drop the books off in the outside return box, but it was locked. He had to go inside to return them.
David walked inside the building a few minutes before closing time. He put the books into the return box. After a quick drink of water and a short stop in the toilet, he'd be on his way to meet Jim. He walked out of the toilet. The library lights were turned off. He was locked—in a library!
David tried to use the telephone, but he couldn't find one. As the sun began to set, he searched for a light and found a little one on a desk. He used a pencil to write a note on a big piece of paper. It read, “I'm locked inside. Please call for help.” He put it on the front door. Surely, someone passing by would see it. He then turned his attention to the library itself.
He was surprised to discover that this place was not so bad. Rows and rows of books! When he saw a book about Michael Jordan on the desk, he picked it up. He opened the book and began to read. He felt that being locked in the library didn't seem to be such a terrible thing.

短文简介:本文的关键词是“音乐对人的影响”。文章讲述了一项关于音乐和语言的研究,结果表明音乐能够刺激大脑提高语言能力。另外,另一个例子也表明音乐有许多作用。
Is there a connection between music and language?
According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, let's look at two examples. A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person?s hearing ability. In his study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room.
The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra. When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, including the broken parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again. Music improves attention, memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better.
Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, it's also good for us in many other ways.
(提醒:做题时,请在语篇中画出你认为有关正确答案的语境线索。)( )1. ________ ability can be improved according to Kraus's recent study.

Do you like sports? If your answer is yes, sometimes you'll find it very difficult to have enough time to do it, even on weekends. However, you don't have to worry about it because of Sunshine Sports Program. It was launched(启动)by the Ministry of Education(教育部).
It suggests that students around the country should have an hour of sports every day. Students will be able to do any sport they like. The program is to make students happy and keep them healthy.
Han Jiawen, from Shanghai Yangsi Middle School, likes the idea. Han and her classmates skip ropes(跳绳)together. “We have a good time,” Han said, “Playing is better than having classes.”
Wang Lichao welcomes the idea, too. “It's good to be able to breathe some fresh air instead of sitting in the classroom.” But the 14-year-old student from Tianjin wonders whether there will be enough space for everyone. “With so many students outside,” he said. “I'm afraid there won't be enough standing room on the playground.” Wu Jiatong's school is in Liaoning. Her favorite sport is running. Wu and other students like running for 40 minutes every morning. “It's tiring,” Wu said. “But we do feel healthier. We hope we can do what we want.”
