树根 root
根是植物的营养器官 (the vegetative organs of plants),通常位于地表下面,负责吸收 (absorb) 土壤里面的水分及溶解 (dissolve) 其中的离子,并且具有支持,贮存 合成(support and store) 有机物质的作用。位于地表外的气生根(榕树)也属于根的一种。

树干 trunk
树干不是树木的身体骨架部分,多数为木材的来源 (the source of wood),树木外包树皮 (covered with bark)。树干有年轮 (rings) 记录年龄。树干负责承拓整株植物,树干里的木质部负责运输 (transportation) 供水及营养以助光合作用 (photosynthesis) 和新陈代谢 (metabolism)。

树木主干上分出的茎条,通常是细长的从树主干或大枝上长出的细茎或者由植物芽苞长出的嫩茎或部分 (a bud or a part)。
树叶 leaf
叶内含有叶绿体 (chloroplast),是植物进行光合作用的主要场所 (the main place)。同时,植物的蒸腾作用 (transpiration )是通过叶的气孔 (stomata )进行的。

Rebecca wants to know more about trees and how they help us. She is interviewing Dr Jones about trees.
Rebecca: How do trees help us, Dr Jones?
Dr Jones: They help us in many ways. They keep the air cool and clean. They take in harmful gases from the air and produce oxygen for us to breathe. They’re major fighters against air pollution.

Rebecca: I know trees also make our lives more convenient. Many of the things in our daily lives come from trees. For example, paper and pencils.
Dr Jones: You’re right, Rebecca. In fact, we get a lot more from trees. We get fruit and oil from them. Tea also comes from the leaves of trees. Look around this room. A lot of the furniture is made of wood. Trees are really important in our daily lives.
