Almost every night for more than ten years, Kirk Alexander, 48, of Salem, Oregon, ordered dinner from his local restaurant Domino’s Pizza. Then one day, he stopped calling.
“It had been several days,”Domino’s general manager Sarah Fuller said, “which is not like him.”
Sarah had known Kirk since 2009. Many Domino’s delivery drivers regularly made the short trip to Kirk’s house, about six minutes away. She knew he worked from home and that he hardly went outside. She also knew that he had suffered health problems in the past. Sarah was worried. Perhaps something was wrong.
Around 1 a.m. on Sunday, May 8,Sarah sent delivery driver Tracey Hamblen to Kirk’s home. Tracey approached the door as he had countless times before and knocked. He could plainly see the TV set and lights were on, but after several minutes, Kirk still hadn’t answered the door. Tracey called Kirk. The call went straight to voice mail.
Tracey then called 911, and soon officers were on their way. When they arrived at Kirk’s house, they heard a man calling for help from inside. They broke down the door and found Kirk on the floor in need of immediate medical attention after suffering from what Sarah said was a stroke. One day later, and they might have been too late.
So is keeping an eye on regular customers part of Domino’s business plan? Not really, says Sarah.“Kirk is part of our family here,”she said. “We felt like we needed to do something.”
1.What can we learn about Kirk?
A.He is out of work.
B.He lives with his family.
C.He enjoys staying indoors.
D.He always goes to Domino’s.
2.What happened to Kirk on May 8?
A.He called 911 for help.
B.He had a sudden serious illness.
C.He locked himself up in his house.
D.He was knocked down outside his house.
根据第四段的内容和第五段中的found Kirk on the floor...stroke可知,Kirk在5月8日这天突发疾病。
3.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Pizza Saved a Life
B.Small Acts Mattered
C.Neighbor Lent a Hand
D.Domino’s Set an Example

1.A.advise B.persuade
C.warn D.force
2.A.after B.while
C.when D.because
3.A.basement B.bedroom
C.kitchen D.yard
A 解析:本空根据倒数第二段 “the sad dog had made trip after trip to the basement” 可知答案为A, “幸运” 是把东西藏在地下室的玩具箱里。
4.A.cold B.cancer
C.headache D.stomachache
5.A.keep B.lose
C.punish D.leave
6.A.pain B.sadness
C.business D.death
D 解析:由上文 “If I die...”
7.A.successful B.expensive
C.difficult D.painful
故选A。
8.A.Gradually B.Finally
C.Unluckily D.Naturally
9.A.frightened B.disappointed
C.tired D.excited
10.A.floor B.chair
C.bed D.couch
D 解析:从下一段 “She couldn’t ______ her head and her body on the couch” 可知 Jim 是把妻子安顿在沙发上, 让她睡一会儿。故选D。
11.A.greeted B.smiled
C.called D.cried
12.A.sleep B.pain
C.disappointment D.anger
A 解析:上文讲 Mary 非常疲劳, 下文有 “she fell asleep” 和 “When Mary woke” 这些信息, 由此可知此处是说 “但很快睡意袭来”。故选A。
13.A.shake B.move
C.raise D.control
14.A.hard B.worried
C.heavy D.nervous
15.A.caused B.saw
C.solved D.realized
16.A.showing B.returning
C.taking D.bringing
17.A.closed B.protected
C.covered D.buried
18.A.Instead B.However
C.Certainly D.Surely
故选A。
19.A.hiking B.walking
C.running D.going
20.A.remains B.becomes
C.turns D.seems

Do you suppose Darwin, one of the greatest scientists of all time, really did foolish experiments? Or did he do experiments that were so simple and basic that other people just thought they were foolish?
Sometimes, people think they already know the answer to a question or the solution to a problem. Sometimes, they really do know an answer or a solution, but without thinking they are important.
Charles Darwin didn’t settle for(满足于) just thinking he knew something. And, he believed all things could be important however simple they seemed to be.
Suppose you drop sheets of paper that are of exactly the same size and shape. If you drop them at the same time in the same place, they will fall in the same way. Now make one of the sheets of paper into a tight little ball and let it drop along with the other sheets. What happens? You have done an experiment that is so simple that you might think it couldn’t be worth anything.
But this simple experiment is important. It explains part of our present-day understandings of physics, ideas that were worked out long ago by Galileo and Newton. And these understandings set_aside some of ancient Greek physics.
Scientists sometimes stop to look at very simple things and to think very hard about them. Even the simplest idea, which we might think is foolish, can shake the foundations of science.

A.was a great English scientist
B.always liked doing the experiments that others thought difficult
C.thought even the simplest thing was important

2.The underlined phrase “set aside” most probably means ________.
A.throw away B.store up
C.put to use D.realize
3.The author of the passage tries to ________.
A.convince us that Charles Darwin, Galileo and Newton are the greatest scientists in the world
B.draw the conclusion that basic sciences are simple things
C.prove that two sheets of paper, with the same size and shape, will fall at the same speed
D.draw our attention to everyday happenings around us
4.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Darwin really did foolish experiments.
B.According to some people Darwin did foolish experiments.
C.It is believed by all the people that things could be important though they seemed to be simple.
D.Galileo and Newton worked out ancient Greek physics.
Or did he do experiments that were so simple and basic that other people just thought they were foolish?
B
Do you like writing a few paragraphs every day about your experiences, hopes, memories or feelings? If you don’t, it’s time to make a change now. Here is why.
You will gradually become better at expressing yourself. When I am forced to write every day because of a book deadline(最后期限), I am always amazed at how quickly my writing and verbal(口头的) communication skills improve. When we become lazy with words, it is more difficult to describe feelings, share experiences and make ourselves understood.
You will remember things long forgotten. As you write about memories, it is like opening an old photo album. Your pen begins to explore feelings and details you have forgotten, and dreams you have left behind. You suddenly remember people you would like to contact again. Writing is an activity that avoids distractions(分心) long enough for you to explore those wonderful moments of the past. Sometimes they are frightening. Sometimes they are wonderful and almost always they are helpful.
Writing about daily experiences and feelings provides a recorded history that will influence how you make future decisions. There’s a reason that the greatest leaders in history were students of history. They learned from what had happened before. Your history is important. Don’t let it be forgotten.
Writing reminds you of your dreams and keeps you moving toward them. It is a means of keeping track of your purpose and the goals that will lead you to achieve them. Reviewing what you have written is a perfect way to see your progress and to show when you have been distracted and may need to give all your attention again to your writing.
Writing a little every day could provide the material that someday becomes a published book. When I wrote about my four-year-old granddaughter who had lost in the mountains, I never dreamed it would be in a book.

You will gradually become better at expressing yourself.
6.According to Paragraph 3, what does writing help us do?

D.Explore happy moments in others’ lives.
You will remember things long forgotten. As you write about memories, it is like opening an old photo album. Your pen begins to explore feelings and details you have forgotten, and dreams you have left behind.
7.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell about writing?
A.It can be encouraging.
B.It can be distracting.
C.It can be disappointing.
D.It can be interesting.
Writing reminds you of your dreams and keeps you moving toward them. It is a means of keeping track of your purpose and the goals that will lead you to achieve them.
8.What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage?
A.To tell how to publish books one day.
B.To explain why the author loves writing.
C.To tell how to improve our writing skills.

本句中and so was the city相当于the city was buried, too。
或it is/was the same with...
或it is/was the same with...

A.He is out of work.

A.He called 911 for help.
B.He had a sudden serious illness.
C.He locked himself up in his house.
D.He was knocked down outside his house.
根据第四段的内容和第五段中的found Kirk on the floor...stroke可知,Kirk在5月8日这天突发疾病。
3.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Pizza Saved a Life
B.Small Acts Mattered
C.Neighbor Lent a Hand
D.Domino’s Set an Example

1.A.advise B.persuade
C.warn D.force
2.A.after B.while
C.when D.because
3.A.basement B.bedroom
C.kitchen D.yard
A 解析:本空根据倒数第二段 “the sad dog had made trip after trip to the basement” 可知答案为A, “幸运” 是把东西藏在地下室的玩具箱里。
4.A.cold B.cancer
C.headache D.stomachache
5.A.keep B.lose
C.punish D.leave
6.A.pain B.sadness
C.business D.death
D 解析:由上文 “If I die...”
7.A.successful B.expensive
C.difficult D.painful
故选A。
8.A.Gradually B.Finally
C.Unluckily D.Naturally
9.A.frightened B.disappointed
C.tired D.excited
10.A.floor B.chair
C.bed D.couch
D 解析:从下一段 “She couldn’t ______ her head and her body on the couch” 可知 Jim 是把妻子安顿在沙发上, 让她睡一会儿。故选D。
11.A.greeted B.smiled
C.called D.cried
12.A.sleep B.pain
C.disappointment D.anger
A 解析:上文讲 Mary 非常疲劳, 下文有 “she fell asleep” 和 “When Mary woke” 这些信息, 由此可知此处是说 “但很快睡意袭来”。故选A。
13.A.shake B.move
C.raise D.control
14.A.hard B.worried
C.heavy D.nervous
15.A.caused B.saw
C.solved D.realized
16.A.showing B.returning
C.taking D.bringing
17.A.closed B.protected
C.covered D.buried
18.A.Instead B.However
C.Certainly D.Surely
故选A。
19.A.hiking B.walking
C.running D.going
20.A.remains B.becomes
C.turns D.seems

Do you suppose Darwin, one of the greatest scientists of all time, really did foolish experiments? Or did he do experiments that were so simple and basic that other people just thought they were foolish?
Sometimes, people think they already know the answer to a question or the solution to a problem. Sometimes, they really do know an answer or a solution, but without thinking they are important.
Charles Darwin didn’t settle for(满足于) just thinking he knew something. And, he believed all things could be important however simple they seemed to be.
Suppose you drop sheets of paper that are of exactly the same size and shape. If you drop them at the same time in the same place, they will fall in the same way. Now make one of the sheets of paper into a tight little ball and let it drop along with the other sheets. What happens? You have done an experiment that is so simple that you might think it couldn’t be worth anything.
But this simple experiment is important. It explains part of our present-day understandings of physics, ideas that were worked out long ago by Galileo and Newton. And these understandings set_aside some of ancient Greek physics.
Scientists sometimes stop to look at very simple things and to think very hard about them. Even the simplest idea, which we might think is foolish, can shake the foundations of science.

B.always liked doing the experiments that others thought difficult
