Last week, I went out during Gillian's afternoon nap (小睡) for jogging. Breakfast dishes were still on the table. By the time I __1__ Gillian had woken up and our family's lunch dishes were added to the mess (混乱). My husband __2__ said: “I never remember my house being in this __3__ situation as a kid.”
I could have been __4__ at this, but I didn't. I kept calm, and I thought about it this way. In theory, I'm a __5__ mom of two young children, just like my mother?in?law was. My only job is to raise happy children, __6__ healthy meals and keep a __7__ home. In fact, that's exactly __8__ I imagined my life when I emailed my resignation (辞呈) to my boss more than two years ago. But now, I just can't seem to stay on top of my __9__. A clean house just doesn't make me happy in the way that a clean house was __10__ to my mother?in?law.
My __11__ told me that he always saw his mom cleaning the windows and sweeping the floor. My children often __12__ food from the floor and eat it, but I can't say it is because the floor is spotless. In fact, our children always have clean clothes to wear—I just can't __13__ that they will be in a drawer. Most likely they will be on the clothesline (晾衣绳) waiting to be __14__.
If given the __15__ between sweeping floors and reading books, I'll pick the latter. It means we feel __16__ when friends drop in suddenly. Moreover, I use green cleaning __17__. In that case, I needn't __18__ that chemical cleaners will make my kids sick.
I find my children start to pick fights with each other to get __19__ attention whenever I spend too much time away from them in cleaning. __20__ a clean house is satisfying, I can't say that a clean house makes me happy.

It's been so long that I can't remember the crime, but I'll never forget the punishment: Dig up the fig tree (无花果树) in the backyard and plant it at Mumsy's place in the country. In a__15__fair world, I don't deserve the reward. I had__16__the tree for my own complaints. What right did I have to the fruit? Years later, I put this__17__ to my father.
