概念：
表示在过去某一时刻或某一段时间内正在进行的动作。
构成：
结构：be过去式 (was/were）+ 动词-ing
过去进行时的结构
S(主语) + was / were +v.-ing + 其它。

时间标志：
then (那时)=at that time (当时), last night (昨晚), at five yesterday (昨天5 点), the whole morning (整个上午)，at this time yesterday (昨天这个时候)或以when, while 引导的时间状语从句。
过去进行时与一般过去时的区别
1. 一般过去时
过去某个时间发生过的动作或存在的状态
? I wrote a letter yesterday.
（已写完）
2. 过去进行时
过去某个时刻或某一段时间正在进行的动作
? I was writing a letter at that time.
（未写完，＂写＂的片段）
进行时表某一行为的＂片断＂；一般时表示行为的＂整体＂和存在的状态。
指时间段，也可以指时间点
可以是延续性动词，也可以是瞬间性动词

延续性动词和瞬间性动词
1.延续性动词
延续性动词又名持续性动词，它用来表示能够延续的动作，
这种动作可以长时间延续下去或产生持久的影响。
study, work, stand, lie, know, walk, keep, live, have, wait,
watch, sing, read, sleep, stay 等。
2.瞬间性动词
用来表示不能延续的动作,这种动作发生后立即结束。
open, die, close, begin, go, move, borrow, lend, arrive, die
e.g. He has lived in Beijing for 20 years.
e.g. He moved to Beijing 20 years ago.
他在北京住了20年。
他北京搬去了20年。

when 和 while 用法小结
相同点： when 和while 引导时间状语从句。
都有“当……的时候”的意思。
①I was waiting for the bus when it began to rain heavily.
当天开始下大雨时，我正在等公交车。
②While you were cooking, I went out to buy a cake.
当你正在烧饭时，我出去买了一个蛋糕。
(1)表示“当……的时候”，如后面连接的动词为进行时态，则用while多于用when。而when通常与瞬间性动词或延续性不强的动词连用。如：
(2)如果while前后的动词都是进行时态，while可意为
“与此同时”。如：
I was doing my homework while my father was reading a newspaper.
当我爸爸在看报时，我在做作业。
(3)当while前后的句子描述的情况相对或相反， while可意为“而”，while更强调并列的对比而非转折。如：
I like sports while my sister likes reading.
我喜欢运动而我妹妹喜欢阅读。
不同点：
when后面通常接一般过去时的从句，而while后接进行时态的句子。
When I got home, the football game was over.
当我回到家的时候，足球比赛已经结束了。
While I was watching TV, Tom came in.
当我在看电视的时候，汤姆进来了。
不同点：
有时when可以代替while，而while则不能代替when。
when引导的时间状语从句中，从句的动作和主句的动作可以同时发生，也可以一前一后先后发生；
while则强调主句和从句的动作同时发生。
While I was watching TV, she was doing some cleaning.
当我正在看电视的时候，她正在打扫。
当他们到达时，正在下雨。
