TextbookAnalysis With the title Sherlock Holmes, Module Three focuses on the introducing the story of Sherlock Holmes and other types of crime novel. My teaching material serves as the second part of this module, entitled “From Whodunnit? to Hard-boiled: The Strange World of the Crime Novel”. It is an expository article mainly tells the characters of three different genres of crime novel, including amateur detective novel, private investigator novel and police officer novel. The teacher needs to guide students to find out the characters of each genre and compare the differences between them, in order to help students to build a comprehensive understanding of crime novel.
Students Analysis The topic of crime novel can definitely trigger much response from students. But this long passage with many unfamiliar vocabulary may set an obstacle to comprehension and cause attentiveness problems to the students, especially who knows little about crime novel. With the careful guidance of the teacher, the students are expected to set up a whole understanding of crime novel and explore each genre easily by employing proper reading skills .
Teaching Aims Knowledge Aims To get to know the characters of crime novel in each genre.To master some expressions including eccentric, substitute, reveal, intriguing, investigator, hard-boiled, philosophical, sophisticated, judge by, be dismissed as, in contrast to, revolve around.
Ability Aims 1. To practice reading skills, such as skimming, scanning and intensive reading.2. To learn how to guess the word meaning by finding context clues.3. To develop the analytical ability and story-telling ability.
Emotional Aims To inspire students’ interest in exploring different types of crime novels.
Teaching important points To summarize the structure of this passage by skimming.To build a whole understanding of crime novel by scanning.To identify the main characters of each type of crime novel by intensive reading

1. Lead-in Teacher asks students to read the title of this passage and questions Qs: 1) From this title, can you guess what our topic is today?2) What are the meanings of the strange words Whodunnit? and Hardboiled?
Purpose: To lead in the topic and arouse students’ interest in reading.
2. Fast-reading Teacher asks students to quickly read the beginning part of each paragraph and figure out the main idea of each paragraph.
Purpose: To help students get the basic structure of this passage by skimming.
3.Brainstorm Teacher encourages students to brainstorm the basic information of the detective novels they have ever read.Q: Speaking of detective novel, what can you come up with first?
Purpose: To activate students’ background knowledge of crime novel and in order to help them comprehend the paragraph one more easily.
4. Close-reading 1. Teacher asks students to read paragraph one aloud to gain more information about detective novels and then do a quick quiz about the features of detective novel shown in paragraph one. 2. Teacher instructs students to circle the vocabulary “reveal, judging by, be dismissed as” in paragraph one, and figure out the meanings by finding evidence in the passage.Q: Try to figure out the meaning of them. Tell me how did you work it out? Where is the evidence?3.Teacher encourages students to read paragraph two aloud and answer the questions:Qs: 1) Who is the typical amateur detective?2) Retell the story of amateur detective story to your partner. 4. Teacher asks students to read paragraph three aloud and answer the questions:Qs: 1) What’s the differences between the genre “cozies” and “hard-boiled”? 2) Summarize the features of typical private investigator.5. Teacher encourages students to read paragraph four aloud and find out: Qs: 1) How many sub-types of police detective novels?2) summarize the features of each sub-type.3) What are modern detective novels like?
Purpose: 1. To help students collect the characters of each type of detective novel through scanning and careful reading.To encourage students to deepen their understanding of each type by making comparison.To introduce some new words to students.
5.Post-reading Teacher asks students to review the features of each type of crime novel and match listed features with each type.Teacher brings the title up again to check students’ understanding.Teacher encourages students to discuss in groups: Qs: What’s your favorite type of detective novel? Examples? Why it interests you so much?
Purpose: 1. To help students to review each type of crime novel. To inspire students’ interest in sharing the crime novels they have read and their reading response.
6. Homework Choose your favorite crime novel and write a short passage of reading response in 300 words.
