Passage 1
Birdwatching
Birdwatching is becoming more and more popular in many parts of the world. Birdwatchers enjoy looking for and listening to different kinds of bird. To watch birds, all you need is a pair of binoculars, a field guide and love for birds.
If you are just starting birdwatching, buy a cheaper pair of binoculars. You can choose better ones when your needs and skills grow. A field guide helps you learn about the birds' appearances, calls and habits before birdwatching. When you are ready, it's best to go to the wild with someone who is more experienced. You can join a birdwatching group to learn about some beginning skills. A local birdwatching club is ideal.
Start birdwatching in the morning, when birds are searching for food. Most of the time, you will hear bird calls from all around you, but will not see any birds easily. Look for movement in trees, and bring your binoculars to your eyes.
The most important work for a birdwatcher is to identify the birds he/she sees. A bird's shape, size, colour and habits can help a birdwatcher identify it. When you identify a bird, don't forget to take notes about it on your notebook.
To find more and different birds, you may wish to plan trips to birds' different living areas: forests, lakes, rivers, wetlands, etc. When watching the birds, you should always keep in mind: protect wildlife and its living areas.

Passage 2
Zhalong---a special place
Zhalong Nature Reserve is in Heilongjiang Province in north-east China. It is one of the world's most important wetlands. The area provides food and cover for a lot of wildlife. It is a perfect place for some rare birds.
Many birds live in Zhalong all year round, while some go there only for a short stay. Most birds are active in the daytime, so you can easily watch them there. There are not many cranes left in the world, and 40 percent of them live in Zhalong.
Some people want to make the wetlands smaller in order to have more space for farms and buildings. This will lead to less and less space for wildlife. Moreover, fishermen keep fishing there. As a result, the birds do not have enough food to eat. Now the Chinese government has made laws to prevent all these things in Zhalong.
Once a year, the members of our Birdwatching Club go to study the birds in zhalong. We record their types and changes in their numbers.
Every year, a lot of tourists go to Zhalong to watch the birds. We are now inviting them to help us. We need more people to count and describe the birds. We hope this will help people understand the importance of the wetlands.
I . According to the title, can you predict what the writer is going to write about?
II. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
III.Read and compare the two sentences, which sentence is better? Why?
There are not many cranes left in the world, and 40 percent of them live in Zhalong.
There are a few cranes left in the world, and some of them live in Zhalong.
IV. Read Paragraph3-5 carefully and finish the mind map.
Passage 3
There are many wetlands in China and some of them have become the world’s important wetlands. The world’s largest Elk(麋鹿) Nature Reserve is in Dafeng. More than 700 elks live freely there. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world, but every winter you can see some in the Red-crowned Cranes Nature Reserve in Sheyang.
Yancheng Nature Reserves are home to many different kinds of birds and animals. The temperature in the wetlands is usually not too high or too low. There is a lot of rain and sunshine, too. They are really good places for wildlife.
Providing food and cover for a lot of wildlife is not the only reason why we need to protect wetlands.Wetlands are important because they also help protect nature and resources(资源) like fresh water. Already more than 10 billion people in the world do not have fresh water. These small animals such as birds and snails play a very important part in keeping the balance of nature. Moreover, if the small wetlands animals die, some animals in the food chain will have nothing to eat. They will also die. People need the wetlands to keep the balance(平衡) of nature in the world.
Luckily, more and more people are beginning to realize the importance of wetlands and wildlife. 2 February is World Wetlands Day! This special day was first celebrated in 1997 and it is celebrated every year. Many activities are held to tell people more about wetlands.
1.Why should we protect the wetlands?(Three reasons)
2.If you’re the writer, what are you going to write after the last paragraph?
