On the first day of the New Year 2019, I made up my mind to go to Thailand to teach English as a
volunteer. At the beginning, all I cared about was travelling and seeing the world. I didn’t know how
fantastic my life would be in the coming months!
My journey began with attending TESOL certification(认证) course in my home state of Florida
last February. After 3 weekends of study and another 40 hours’ study online, I received my TESOL
certificate.
I was asked to contact(联系) Philip, who is Program Director of the Teaching in Thailand. After
discussing with Philip, I chose my school and after many months of excitement, I finally flew to
Thailand in early April and I couldn’t wait to explore(探索) the country!
After a few weeks of single travel, I met up with Philip and the other new teachers in my program
in Bangkok. It was great to meet other people who were on the same journey as me, see some cool
sights and walk in Thailand’s cities! After that, I attended the week-long seminar(研讨会). At the end
of the seminar, I was transported to my school—Anuban Buriram Primary School.
I truly love my job—I teach Grades 5 and 6 and I have the cleverest and most active kids in the
world. It’s a truly fantastic thing that you can see the difference you make in someone else’s life, right
in front of you!
Buriram is a small city with green rice fields. People here are more friendly than anyone I’ve ever
met—I’ve never been anywhere where a smile is so easily received, where everyone you pass is so
friendly to say “Hello” and “Good morning”. I’ve been taken out to countless dinners, and been lent a
guitar, a camera, and I am given Thai treats and the most delicious fresh fruits many times a week. I
only hope to repay them in the future.
24. To teach English in a foreign country, one has to ________.
A. graduate from university B. receive a certificate of TESOL
C. be trained in a summer course D. take a course online
25. What did the writer do right away after arriving in Thailand?
A. He travelled around Thailand by himself. B. He had a discussion with Philip.
C. He attended a seminar in Bangkok. D. He met with other volunteers.
26. In the last paragraph the writer is trying to show ________.
A. that Buriram is small but very beautiful
B. that the Thai treats are fresh and delicious
C. how nice and friendly the Thai people are
D. that he wants to repay the people who helped him
27. The writer wrote this passage in order to ________.
A. give some advice to future volunteers B. encourage more people to travel in Thailand
C. show the readers how to become a volunteer D. tell us his voluntary experience in Thailand

C
Students decide to take a job while being in university because of two reasons: on the one hand,
they need money; on the other hand, they want to experience something new and they want to see what
working means. It is a good opportunity(机会) to know about the society and realize the importance of
co-working with others.
But is it good to take a job while you are a university student? There are both advantages and
disadvantages if we were to answer this question. If we were to think about the advantages, we could
mention the ones we have just discussed. Having a job at an early age helps us gain(获得) experience,
which will be very useful to our later life. We may become financially independent (经济独立) and
don’t need to ask our parents for money each time we want to go downtown with our friends, or spend
the holiday at the seaside or in the mountains.
However, students who take a job might have problems in spending enough time on their study. If
they work during the day, they may have to be absent from their classes, and if they work at night, they
will feel tired the next day. They may choose to stay at home resting. What’s worse, some students may
even get bored with studying.
Well, this fact happens every now and then, but there are cases(情况) when well-prepared students
take a part-time job but at the same time they make time for studying, too. And they have good results.
Their case is a good example to follow among the students who decide to work while being in
university. Anyway, we need to keep in mind that study is the most important job for a student.
28. What is the benefit(好处) for university students who take a job according to the passage?
A. Making more friends.
B. Winning free journeys.
C. Preparing them for their future careers(职业).
D. Having complete independence from their family.
29. The writer implies(暗示) that university students ________ in the last paragraph.
A. should learn by doing
B. should not take a job
C. can keep a balance(平衡) between work and study
D. had better take a part-time job during vacation
30. From the passage, we can know that taking a job during university years ________.
A. is much like a coin with two sides B. is much like a cake with fruit in it
C. has more negative(消极的) influences D. has more positive(积极的) influences
九年级英语试卷 第 6 页 (共 8 页)
D
We often find that weekends and holidays feel so short while classes and work feel so long.
Actually, though, we know that this is not true. But we still wonder where that strange feeling comes
from.
In fact, this is one of the ways that we’re tricked(欺骗) by time, according to the website. All that
is interesting. The website lists several wrong impressions(印象) we often have about time. Let’s have
a look.
First of all, emotions affect our time-keeping abilities. Negative emotions(情绪), especially
anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate(全神贯注) more on
the passage of time. However, when we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are
doing and are likely to lose track of (失去对…的意识) time.
Here is another example. In 2007, a group of scientists carried out a test. In the test, people fell 50
meters into a safety net and were then asked about their experience. Although the experience took
shorter than 3 seconds, the people thought it was much longer than it actually was.
This is because of the way our bodies reply to danger, according to the scientists. Our bodies
produce a chemical called adrenaline (肾上腺素) when we are faced with danger. It allows us to
concentrate better so that we can stay alive. As a result, we are able to remember far more details(细
节) over a short period of time, which makes it seem like time is going more slowly.
Another situation when we make mistakes about time is when we take afternoon naps. Have you
ever had trouble telling what time it is after a long nap? That’s because the best amount of time for a
nap is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you enter a new stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. If you
wake up mid-way in this stage, it will take a while before you can correctly perceive (感知) time again.
Yes, time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it. So, perhaps the best thing to do is to
make good use of every minute.
31. According to the passage, what possibly makes people feel so long?
A. Weekends and holidays. B. Weekends and work. C. Classes and work. D. Holidays and work.
32. According to the passage, what will NOT happen when we are faced with danger?
A. Our bodies will produce a chemical called adrenaline.
B. We are able to feel that time seems to go more slowly.
C. Adrenaline will make us concentrate better to stay alive.
D. We will forget far more details over a short period of time.
33. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Negative emotions, especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make
us concentrate more on the passage of time.
B. When we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and we are able
to feel like time is going more slowly.
C. If we wake up mid-way after a long nap, it will take a while before we can correctly perceive
time again.
D. There is no way to control time. Perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every
minute.

九年级英语试卷 第 7 页 (共 8 页)
四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共 10 分,每小题 2 分)
Communication is important for strong family relationships. However, if you don’t truly listen to
others, it can be difficult to communicate. Working on the following listening skills can help you
communicate better.
Listening Actively
Focus on the speaker’s words and not what you’ll say next. When listening to a family member,
pay attention to what’s being said. When talking to someone, pay attention to the speaker and his
thoughts, you can think of how you will reply later.
Make sure the speaker has finished talking before you talk. Instead of starting your reply at once, a
couple of seconds of silence is not a bad thing.
Communicating Effectively(有效的)
Retell what has been said. Try to briefly conclude what you have heard when the speaker finishes.
It will really show you’re listening and allow you and your family to communicate better.
Reflect(思考,回顾) on what’s been said. After talking, reflect briefly on the subject. Try to work
out not just what’s being said, but also why it is important.
Accept you don’t always have to solve someone’s problems.
Avoiding Negative Habits
Do not cut in on others. Interrupting(打断) can break effective conversation. Do not start talking
until the other person has finished.
Stop from offering advice. Unless you are asked, do not offer advice. Offering advice can make it
seem like you’re not really listening but to hear what you want.
Do not change the subject early. Never change the subject before the speaker has got their words
out, even if a subject makes you bored.
Avoid hurrying the speaker. Never say words like, “Can you get to the point?” This will make it
seem like you’re not interested in the conversation.
34. What is communication important for?
35. When should you pay attention to the speaker and his thoughts?
36. How can you communicate effectively?
37. Why can’t you cut in on others?
38. Who should you avoid hurrying?

What’s worse, some students may even get bored with studying.
Well, this fact happens every now and then, but there are cases(情况) when well-prepared students take a part-time job but at the same time they make time for studying, too. And they have good results. We often find that weekends and holidays feel so short while classes and work feel so long. Actually, though, we know that this is not true. But we still wonder where that strange feeling comes from.
In fact, this is one of the ways that we’re tricked(欺骗) by time, according to the website. All that is interesting. The website lists several wrong impressions(印象) we often have about time. Let’s have a look.
First of all, emotions affect our time-keeping abilities. Negative emotions(情绪), especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate(全神贯注) more on the passage of time. However, when we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and are likely to lose track of (失去对…的意识) time.
Here is another example. In 2007, a group of scientists carried out a test. In the test, people fell 50 meters into a safety net and were then asked about their experience. Although the experience took shorter than 3 seconds, the people thought it was much longer than it actually was.
This is because of the way our bodies reply to danger, according to the scientists. Our bodies produce a chemical called adrenaline (肾上腺素) when we are faced with danger. It allows us to concentrate better so that we can stay alive. As a result, we are able to remember far more details(细节) over a short period of time, which makes it seem like time is going more slowly.
Another situation when we make mistakes about time is when we take afternoon naps. Have you ever had trouble telling what time it is after a long nap? That’s because the best amount of time for a nap is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you enter a new stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. If you wake up mid-way in this stage, it will take a while before you can correctly perceive (感知) time again.
Yes, time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it. So, perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.
A. Negative emotions, especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate more on the passage of time.
B. When we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and we are able to feel like time is going more slowly.
C. If we wake up mid-way after a long nap, it will take a while before we can correctly perceive time again.
D. There is no way to control time. Perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.

Communication is important for strong family relationships. However, if you don’t truly listen to others, it can be difficult to communicate. Working on the following listening skills can help you communicate better.
Listening Actively
Focus on the speaker’s words and not what you’ll say next. When listening to a family member, pay attention to what’s being said. When talking to someone, pay attention to the speaker and his thoughts, you can think of how you will reply later.
Make sure the speaker has finished talking before you talk. Instead of starting your reply at once, a couple of seconds of silence is not a bad thing.
Try to work out not just what’s being said, but also why it is important.
Accept you don’t always have to solve someone’s problems.
Avoiding Negative Habits
Do not cut in on others. Interrupting(打断) can break effective conversation. Do not start talking until the other person has finished.
Stop from offering advice. Unless you are asked, do not offer advice. Offering advice can make it seem like you’re not really listening but to hear what you want.
Do not change the subject early. Never change the subject before the speaker has got their words out, even if a subject makes you bored.
Avoid hurrying the speaker. Never say words like, “Can you get to the point?” This will make it seem like you’re not interested in the conversation.
34. What is communication important for?
35. When should you pay attention to the speaker and his thoughts?
36. How can you communicate effectively?
37. Why can’t you cut in on others?
38. Who should you avoid hurrying?
