Will it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.
Opposite to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.
24. During the test, those who were tested were given ________.
A. no breakfast at all B. very rich breakfast
C. little food for breakfast D. different breakfast or none
25. The results of the test show that ________.
A. breakfast has a great effect on work and studies
B. breakfast has little to do with a person's work
C. a person will work better if he has a simple breakfast
D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast
26. The passage mentions that many people believe that if you don't eat breakfast, you will _________.
A. lose weight B. not lose weight
C. be healthier D. gain a lot of weight
27. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?
A. Poor breakfasts affect those who work with brains.
B. Morning diet may cause one to get fatter.
C. Reducing lunch and supper is of less value in weight losing.
D. Eating less in lunch and supper may help to lose weight.
C
Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.
? There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
28. According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?
A. Those who often do sports.
B. Those who often watch television.
C. Those who often have meals at home.
D. Those who often walk to school.
29. The author thinks that children are becoming overweight because________.
A. they can't choose what to eat? ????????????
B. they are too busy to go out and play
C. their parents often cook meals for them??????
D. there are too many fast food shops around
30. The word "steering" underlined in the last sentence most probably means________.
A. forcing? B. guiding?? C. driving?? D. moving
31. The main purpose of the text is to_________.
A. tell a story?? B. provide facts? ???
C. give advice? D. compare opinions.
D
Since the first Earth Day in 1970, Americans have gotten a lot “greener” toward the environment. “We didn’t know at that time there even was an environment, let alone that there was a problem with it,” says Bruce Anderson, president of Earth Day USA.
But what began as nothing important in public affairs has grown into a social movement .Business people, political leaders, university professors, and especially millions of grass-roots Americans are taking part in the movement. “The understanding has increased many, many times,” says Gaylord Nelson, the former governor from Wisconsin, who thought up the first. According to US government reports, emissions (排放)from cars and trucks have dropped from 10.3 million tons a year to 5.5 tons .The number of cities producing CO beyond the standard has been reduced from 40 to 9. Although serious problems still remain and need to be dealt with, the world is a safer and healthier place. A kind of “Green thinking” has become part of practices.
Great improvement has been achieved. In 1988 there were only 600 recycling programs; today in 1995 there are about 6,600. Advanced lights, motors, and building designs have helped save a lot of energy and therefore prevented pollution.
Twenty –five years ago, there were hardly any education programs for environment. Today, it’s hard to find a public school, university, or law school that does not have such a kind of program. “Until we do that, nothing else will change!” say Bruce Anderson.
32. According to Anderson, before 1970, Americans had little idea about ______.
A. the social movement B. recycling techniques
C. environmental problems D. the importance of Earth Day
33. Where does the support for environmental protection mainly come from?
A. The grass –roots level B. The business circle
C. Government officials D. University professors
34. What have Americans achieved in environmental protection?
A. They have cut car emissions to the lowest
B. They have settled their environmental problems
C. They have lowered their CO levels in forty cities.
D. They have reduced pollution through effective measures.
35. What is especially important for environmental protection according to the last paragraph?
A. Education B. Planning C. Green living D. CO reduction

Dear Linlin,
How time flies!
It has been about two months since I entered high school. Now I’d like to tell you something about my school.
I have made many new friends here. Yi Xin,my deskmate, is my best friend now. We share most interests and we can express our thoughts and feelings after class.
Let’s focus our energy on what we are learning and continue studying hard for the National College Entrance Examinations in less than three years.
Long live our friendship!
Yours,
Li Hua
