With an outbreak of Novel coronavirus pneumonia (新型冠状病毒肺炎), Zhang Dingyu, the president of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, and his fellow workers have been overloaded with work. Zhang has been so busy lately that he can’t get adequate sleep. Sometimes he goes to bed at about 2 am and gets up at around 4 am. “Normally, nurses change shifts every two hours,” he said, “now the nurses, as well as doctors, must work four or five hours straight without a break.”
Zhang, who was diagnosed in 2018 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(肌萎缩侧索硬化症,俗称“渐冻人症”), must slowly make his way up and down the stairs. “My leg muscles have become weaker because of the disease. In other words, he didn’t have access to many things, such as playing basketball and football. I am clumsy, and sometimes I get out of breath, so I have to stop and rest occasionally.” he said.

Even so, Zhang - who has been on the front line of medical emergencies for decades, including the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 and overseas medical relief missions to Algeria and Pakistan?-?overcomes difficulties to adapt to his disability and tries his best to quicken his pace to save precious time for patients.
What makes the unyielding man weep is that his wife was infected with NCP while working at another hospital. He felt guilty when he knew it. “I remember it was Jan 13. I talked with her about a patient who was struggling for breath after a seizure (抽搐), “Zhang said. “My wife told me that she had the same symptoms. I thought she was joking and I was even annoyed.” Fortunately, Zhang’s wife received treatment and recovered.

Instead of attending to her, Zhang continued working tirelessly. “As my life is counting down, I don’t have time to sit around. I have to run, competing against time to get more patients back from the critical pandemic (全球流行病).”
Zhang and his team got some relief and great encouragement when medical aid from the nation arrived at the hospital. Noting China’s scientific and economic strength and the unified will of its people, Zhang said he’s confident. “For ordinary people, the most important thing is to enhance the immunity, which is beneficial to you throughout your whole life. Infectious disease is not incurable and we need to avoid fears. We need to grow stronger physically and psychologically.” he added.
