Sheridan is a town in Indiana, US. there are lots of trees near the public schools in the town. Their leaves turn sunlight into energy.
In Sheridan, the Sun not just provides energy for plants. It keeps schools running too. The schools use solar panels(太阳能电池板) to turn sunlight into energy.
The science behind solar energy is not new. But Sheridan Community Schools is the first school district (学区)in Indiana to be completely solar-powered. The district finished putting in solar panels for all three of its schools in 2016. Some of the panels can turn to follow the Sun across the sky.
In 2008, fewer than 1,000 schools used solar power. By 2014, there were 3, 727 schools with solar panels in the US. These numbers come from a report by The Solar Foundation. Roxie Brown, a program director there, said that the number of schools with solar panels has continued to go up since 2014.
Solar energy has some benefits compared with other energy sources(来源). Sunlight is a renewable source, which means it won’t run out. Solar panels don’t harm the environment. Also sunlight is free. So by using solar power, schools can save money on energy costs.
Brown thinks more schools should run on solar energy. The Sun is the Earth's energy source, she says. “We’re trying to make it the energy source for our houses, cars and schools too.”
But using solar energy isn’t always easy. Solar panels can be expensive to put in. The panels also take up space. But for many schools, going solar is worth it.

You don’t have to be a scientist to solve big environmental problems. One Dutch designer is finding creative ways to make a change ----- and he’s inviting cyclists to join him.
Daan Roosegaarde is a designer from the Netherlands. He uses creative ideas to improve city life. For his Smog (雾霾)Free Project, he designed a special tower that cleans air in Chinese parks. In the Netherlands, he designed a shining bicycle path.
Now Daan and his team are working with engineers at Chinese bike-sharing company Ofo to create a new product for public use. It’s an air-cleaning machine connected to a bicycle and is part of the Smog Free Project. In smoggy weather, the machine would breathe in the air in front of the bike and blow out a stream of clean air towards the cyclists face. So how does it work? Daan said the “smog-free bikes” would use the process of ionization(电离作用) to collect harmful particles in the air, such as PM2.5.
“Take a balloon and polish it with your hand to produce static (静电)—it' s the same principle(原理),” Daan told China daily.
It's no secret that air pollution is a big problem for China. In winter, it's common for thick clouds of haze(霾) to cover areas of China. The haze is caused largely by factory production, burning of coal and car emissions。
In 2016, only one-fourth of Chinese cities met the country’s air quality standards (标准), according to a survey of 338 cities nationwide from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
“Of course one tower and a few bikes won’t solve China’s air pollution problem,” Daan said. But smog-free bikes are an exciting idea that will hopefully inspire communities to create greener cities.”
36. According to the passage, _________.
A. air pollution is not a big problem in China
B. creative ideas may help improve city life
C. only scientists can solve big environmental problems
D. the survey of 338 cities nationwide was not necessary
37. The air-cleaning machine offers clean air to the cyclist by __________.
A. breathing in dirty air and cleaning it B. cleaning the air around the cyclist
C. running fast with the bike D. blowing out dirty
38 What can we learn from the passage?
A. People who have creative ideas can get free shared bikes.
B. Only smog- free bikes can go on the shining bicycle path.
C. Daan and his family spent all their time improving China’s air quality.
D. Chinas haze in winter happens mainly because of three reasons.
39. Daan is inviting cyclists to join him in order to________.
A. raise money for the tower B. test his new machine
C. make more Chinese friends D. help solve the air pollution problem
40. What's the best title for the passage?
A. Breathing In and out B. Biking for Fresh Air

Good morning, everyone! As we know, people are producing waste every day. Some waste is
recyclable, while some is unrecyclable. So it’s necessary to sort waste.
There are many advantages of waste sorting. It helps cut down on pollution in the environment and increase the recycling of waste. It helps save energy. What’s more, it helps cut down the cost of dealing with
the waste.
As middle school students, we’re supposed to play a part in waste sorting. First, we should learn how to
sort waste. Then we should sort the waste before throwing it away. And at weekends we can work as volunteers to help people around our neighbourhoods learn how to sort waste properly.
Sorting waste is meaningful. So together, our actions can make a difference and lead to a better environment.
